We want to give a huge thank you to Mike Shambaugh and the Cherokee Nation for donating $1,000 to our Native American Programs Activity Account over the summer! These funds will be used to supplement our current funds to provide our students with additional cultural activities, presentations, resources, and materials! Wado!

National Indigenous Award- Reed Williams National Indigenous Award- Reed Williams

We’re celebrating our own Reed Williams, one of 72,000 students from across the country who earned academic honors from College Board’s National Recognition Programs! He received an award from the National Indigenous Award and the National Rural and Small Town Award. The National Recognition Programs honor the strong academic achievements of underrepresented students. They’re an easy way for students to showcase their hard work in high school. The programs not only benefit students; they also benefit colleges looking to recruit diverse, talented students.

Congratulations, Reed!

Elementary & middle school teachers are annually provided with Native American culture and language books and reading materials to place in their classroom libraries. This provides all our students with access to Native American books and reading materials. Additionally, our elementary and middle teachers are encouraged to read Native American cultural books to their students and utilize cultural materials in their lessons.

A Note from Ms. Tashina

We are weeks in to our School year and I have been blown away at how much language our students retained over the summer! They are so intrigued and invested in our Cherokee class and its so exciting to see and hear. We have done a review and brought in some jees-duhns, read a legend, learned a joke to help remember how to say squirrel in Cherokee (how does a squirrel cross the road?....suhhhh-lohhhh-lee). My Upper grades have talked about Cherokee Syllabary, Sequoyah and The Trail of Tears, as well as introduce the first two characters of the syllabary.

Trail of Tears Reenactment Activity

Students were instructed to get their backpacks, waterbottles, pencil boxes and folders and walk to the playground.
zoom_out_map

Their Journey

Once we reached the playground they were instructed to walk the fence line carrying their items and as they were walking to think about it raining or snowing and their belongings being a blanket or their food or even a baby. Our playground has a slight incline so it was great for this activity, it made it a bit more challenging as we remembered the hundreds of miles the Cherokees walked during forced removal.

How the journey ended

1/3 of Cherokees did not survive The Trail of Tears. This is what 1/3 of the class looks like and those who did not survive our journey.
