Class of 2027 Officers
Our Class of 2027 officers had the wonderful opportunity to give back to our community by volunteering at the San Antonio Food Bank and Josie's Pantry!
At the San Antonio Food Bank, our students worked together to prepare food bags for families in need. At Josie's Pantry, they helped sort and organize clothing for individuals experiencing homelessness.
We are incredibly proud of our students for demonstrating outstanding teamwork, leadership, compassion, and dedication to serving others. They went above and beyond, showing that leadership isn't just about holding a title, but about making a positive difference in others' lives.
Our students represented Communications Arts High School with pride, kindness, and a true heart for service. Great job, Class of 2027 officers! Keep leading by example and making Comm Arts proud!

Navigating October & PSAT Readiness
Welcome to another busy and productive week at Communications Arts High School! As October progresses, we're focusing on key academic milestones, including the upcoming PSAT/NMSQT, fall wellness, college application preparations, and campus awareness initiatives.
We encourage all students to prioritize consistent study routines, protect their rest, and make use of the academic and counseling resources available across campus.
Preparing for the PSAT: Essential Study Tips & Test-Day Strategies
The College Board PSAT/NMSQT takes place on Wednesday, October 21st. For 11th graders, this exam qualifies you for the National Merit Scholarship Program. Review these proven strategies to perform your best:
Effective Study Habits Before Test Day
- Utilize Free Practice Tools: Log in to Khan Academy for Official SAT/PSAT Practice to take free diagnostic tests and targeted practice problems.
- Active Recall over Passive Reading: Use flashcards or explain concepts aloud in your own words rather than simply re-reading notes.
- Time-Blocking (Pomodoro Method): Structure study sessions into focused 25-minute intervals followed by 5-minute breaks to keep focus high and mitigate fatigue.
- Free Practice Resources for the 2026 PSAT-Kaplan Test Prep
Test-Day Preparation
- Charge & Pack Tech: Fully charge your NISD Chromebook the night before and pack your charger.
- Protect Sleep Hygiene: Target 8 to 9 hours of continuous sleep before test day by powering down digital screens 30 minutes before bed.
- Fuel Your Body: Eat a balanced, nutrient-dense breakfast and stay hydrated throughout the morning.
Mental Health & Wellness: Managing Fall Stress
Balancing rigorous magnet coursework, test prep, and personal commitments can create stress. Practicing simple grounding techniques can help restore cognitive equilibrium:
- Mindful Micro-Breaks: Step away from digital screens during long study blocks to rest your eyes and refresh your focus.
- Box Breathing: Inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, exhale for 4 seconds, and hold for 4 seconds to calm your mind during high-stress moments.
- Box breathing relaxation technique: how to calm feelings of stress or anxiety
- Progressive Muscle Relaxation: Tense each muscle group for 5 seconds and then release to systematically reduce physical body tension.
- Brain Dump Journaling: Write down all your current thoughts, tasks, and worries onto paper without filtering to clear mental clutter.
Stress Management 101
- Identify Stressors: Recognize early physical and mental signs of stress, such as fatigue or muscle tension, and take proactive breaks.
- Healthy Coping Mechanisms: Add daily movement, journaling, or creative outlets to your routine to release stored tension.
- Reach Out for Support: Don't hesitate to visit the Counseling Office or talk with a trusted adult when you feel overwhelmed.
- Prioritize Sleep Hygiene: Keep a consistent sleep schedule and create a restful environment free of screen distractions before bed.
- Engage in Physical Exercise: Add regular movement, like walking, jogging, or stretching, to help lower stress hormones and improve mood.
- Set Digital Boundaries: Establish specific times to disconnect from social media and notifications to prevent digital overload.
- Practice Gratitude Journaling: Take a few minutes each day to write down what you are thankful for to shift your focus to positive experiences.
- The Science of Gratitude
Academic & College Readiness Updates
Goal Setting Strategies
- SMART Goals Framework: Set academic and personal goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.
- Actionable Micro-Steps: Break larger long-term goals down into manageable weekly and daily tasks to build momentum and avoid procrastination.
- Backward Goal Mapping: Start with your ultimate end objective (such as a target GPA, college acceptance, or project completion) and reverse-engineer the necessary milestones, working backward to establish immediate daily actions.
- Visual Progress Tracking: Keep a dedicated digital dashboard, physical habit tracker, or vision board to review milestones regularly, track progress, and maintain long-term motivation.
- Accountability Systems: Share targets with a trusted peer, parent, counselor, or study partner to set up regular progress check-ins, keep each other accountable, and celebrate key achievements.
- Reflect & Readjust: Schedule periodic weekly reviews to evaluate what strategies are working, identify obstacles, and adapt your plan flexibly without abandoning the overall vision.

College Board
AP Exams
College Board's Advanced Placement® Program (AP®) enables students to pursue college-level studies—with the opportunity to earn college credit, advanced placement, or both—while still in high school. Through AP courses in over 35 subjects, each culminating in a challenging exam, students learn to think critically, build strong arguments, and consider multiple sides of an issue—skills that prepare them for college and beyond. Taking AP courses shows college admissions officers that students have pursued the most challenging curriculum available, and research indicates that students who score a 3 or higher on an AP Exam typically experience greater academic success in college and are more likely to earn a college degree than non-AP students.
It's time to register for AP Exams. Payments for AP exams will be made using MySchoolBucks online or by cash/check (payable to 'Taft High School') handed directly to Ms. Najera in room A222a before November 9, 2025 (for full-year & fall semester AP courses). Payment for spring semester only exams (AP Macro) is due in full by March 4, 2026.
The AP Exam Fee for the 2026-2027 school year is $40 per exam, or $10 if a student qualifies for free or reduced lunch. If a student registers for an exam and cancels after the November ordering deadline, they will be charged a $40 cancellation fee. Additionally, if a student does not order an exam by November 9, 2025 (for a full-year course), a $40 late order fee may apply.
For more information about the Free and Reduced Program contact their office at (210) 397-4517, email free-reduced@nisd.net, or visit www.nisd.net/schools/menus.

NISD 26-27 Calendar
Off & Away for the Day
We would like to remind everyone of our No Personal Communication Device Policy during school hours. This includes cell phones, earbuds, smartwatches, and similar devices, in line with Texas House Bill 1481, to support a focused learning environment.
Students may use personal laptops for classwork as directed by their teachers. Specific devices, such as Adobe-equipped iPads for certain courses, are also permitted. However, all devices must be powered off and kept in backpacks during passing periods, lunch, and non-applicable classes.
Please use laptops responsibly for educational purposes only. Misuse will result in loss of privileges. Thank you for your cooperation!
School Safety Reminder
Northside ISD joined the Texas School Safety Center's public awareness campaign, "Threats Are No Joke!" aimed at educating students and parents about the serious consequences of making or sharing threats. The campaign highlights that even joking about threats can have legal repercussions and endanger safety, as shown in the PSA video linked below. Students are encouraged to report any concerning information through NISD's Safeline. We encourage everyone to watch the video at https://txssc.txstate.edu/videos/threats-are-no-joke/ to understand better the importance of keeping our schools safe. Thank you.
Safety and Campus Reminders
Comm Arts students will attend assemblies during the second week of school to discuss campus expectations.
As a safety reminder, NISD does not allow food deliveries for students or faculty/staff members. Additionally, all students, faculty, and staff must wear their school IDs on campus for safety. Students who need an ID will have opportunities during the first week of school.
Here is the link for more information: https://www.nisd.net/schools/safetySafety First, 2026-2027
Additionally, any visitors to campus will need to apply and pass a background check. This must be completed every year. It will not roll over. Here is the link to the background check: https://www.nisd.net/community/volunteer-mentor
If you notice anything unusual or a potential safety concern throughout the school year, please get in touch with the NISD Safeline. The Safeline is anonymous and available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Attendance Matters
The Texas Compulsory Attendance Law states that students between the ages of 6 and 19 are subject to the Texas Compulsory Attendance Laws.
Let's start with how it affects a student's academics. The Law states that a student must attend 90% of the class time offered to receive credit for a course. In Northside, our calendar shows 174 school days for the 26/27 school year. This equates to 17 absences in a full-year course before attendance recovery is required or a student loses credit, regardless of their grade. For a semester course, we have 85 days in the fall, which allows 9 absences, and 89 days in the spring, which allows 9 absences, before attendance recovery is required or a student loses credit, regardless of grade. Remember, when considering the 90% rule and its impact on gaining credit, both excused and unexcused absences count.
A student absent more than 75% of class time will no longer be eligible for attendance recovery and will need to retake the course to earn credit. This equates to 22 absences per semester.
If you have any questions or concerns, please email cahs.attendance@nisd.net.
HAC
The Home Access Center (HAC) allows parents to access grades and attendance information.
Adobe Access
Adobe Creative Suite Software at Home for Personal Devices
ComArts CTE students can download and install Adobe Creative Suite software onto their personal laptops and computers (not Chromebooks) for FREE using your NISD student login credentials. Use the attached instructions for guidance. Keep in mind that the Adobe software version installed at home will be a newer version than what is available at school.
