Message from the Principal:

We are in the final month of our second trimester! Our students have been working incredibly hard, and we are seeing so much growth across grade levels. Second Trimester Report Cards will go home on March 13th.

To help measure this progress, we will begin i-Ready diagnostic assessments during the week of February 9. These assessments help us evaluate overall growth for second-trimester report cards. During the week of February 23, students will be assessed on reading fluency, including correct words read per minute, accuracy, and retell. The second trimester officially ends on March 6, 2026.

At the end of January, our school proudly participated in the World-Wide Kindness Challenge, joining over 21 million students worldwide in spreading kindness and setting positive actions in motion!

February 2–6 is Counselor Appreciation Week. We are so grateful for Ms. Rainbow (Counselor) and Ms. Taylor (Wellness Coach) here at Golden Hills. Students are welcome to bring a small treat or a note to show their appreciation and let them know how valued they are.

New this year: Career Week February 9–12, planned by our school counselor, Ms. Rainbow! Each day, 2–3 local community members will visit campus to share about their careers. We’re so excited for this event! We will end the week with Dress as your Future Career Day On Feb 12th!

Our before- and after-school clubs have been a huge success! Current offerings include:

  • Boys Basketball Teams, coached by Mr. G and Ms. Robertson

  • Student Advisory Club with Ms. Rainbow

  • Math Tutoring/Club with Ms. T

  • Before-School Math & Community with Mrs. Russell

  • Band with Mr. Grigorik

  • Girls on the Run with Ms. Dailey

Thank you to the parents who attended our School Site Council and Parent Teacher Group (PTG) meetings. The PTG is busy planning upcoming events, including the Cal Skate Field Trip, and recently sponsored shaved ice and basketball hoops on January 30. Our next PTG meeting will be held on March 5 from 3:00–4:00 p.m. All families are welcome to attend!

Did you know our school uses GoGuardian? This Chromebook monitoring software helps protect students while they are online. While the internet is a powerful learning tool, it also comes with potential risks such as inappropriate content, cyberbullying, and online distractions. GoGuardian helps support digital citizenship by monitoring activity and promoting safe, responsible technology use—an important step in keeping our students safe online. This program helps us monitor student Chromebooks to be sure students are safely using the sites they are assigned. Chromebooks are a learning tool, not a toy, and GoGuardian helps us keep students focused, safe, and practicing responsible digital behavior while online.

Shady Creek Field Trip for 2026-2027 school year!

Shady Creek is a three night, four day environmental camp. Our fourth grade class will be attending next year. In order to attend we must have parent volunteers to stay in the cabins with the students. These parents must be cleared through our district through the volunteer process. We will need to have the parents cleared before the end of this school year to commit to going! The reserved dates for Shady Creek are the week before our October intercession. Please begin the process so we can be sure we have enough parent volunteers.

Fourth Grade families, we will need you for next year! We need around 10 females and 10 male chaperones for the cabins. So far we have 5 volunteers. We have 3 females and 1 male.. We have requested the date of Sept. 29th- Oct. 2nd, this will be confirmed before the end of the year.

Counselors Message:

The first week of February is National School Counselor Week! School Counselors hold a minimum of a Master’s Degree in Counseling. We are experts in mental health and education. School Counselors support students in academic, social-emotional and career domains school-wide, in targeted groups and at individual intervention levels. Our practices are driven by data and uphold the School Counselors Association ethics and professional standards.

We are super excited for Career Week Feb. 9-12. We have 8 guest speakers coming to share their careers with us!

Mon: Erica Ott: School Nurse and Mathew Wallen: Fire Fighter

Tues: Bob Grant: Custom Car Mechanic and Greg Clink: CSU Chico Basketball Coach

Wed: Sergio Garcia: Personal Injury Attorney and Casey Montez CFO of Sac Anime

Thurs: Albert Hougland: Fuel Mechanic in the US Airforce and Mark Morris Entrepreneur of Elite Sound

We had so many great people reach out with so many incredible careers that we didn’t have enough space for everyone! Thank you everyone for willingness to share with our students. This will be an incredible opportunity for students to learn about careers and career avenues that they may have never heard of before.

We just had another Kelvin assessment to look at how well students are feeling connected to at school. The Wellness Coach and I will be checking in with all students scoring below 50% and offering support.

If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to reach out at (530) 532-6000 ext 4601 email rwalker@palermok8.org

Sincerely,

Rainbow Walker

School Counselor
