Principal's Letter Principal's Letter

Dear Parents, Students, and Staff,

Greetings Greenbriar Community! It’s hard to believe we are already well into the school year, and the autumn weather brings a wonderful energy to our school.

Celebrating Our Incredible Teachers

I would like to take a moment to acknowledge and express gratitude to our outstanding teachers. Their dedication and hard work during the initial months have been truly impressive. They are tirelessly striving to provide your student with the best possible experience and an excellent education. We have once again been recognized as a 4 STAR school by the Ohio Department of Education! Congratulations to our students, community, and staff!

We have witnessed remarkable engagement in classrooms, with students assisting one another in their studies and cheering for our school’s sports teams. We encourage you to continue fostering these traditions of collaboration and support at home. Please remember the new policy for events at Byer’s Field: any middle school student attending activities at Byer’s Field MUST be accompanied by a parent for entry. If you have any questions, please contact PCSD Security.

Stay Connected!

We invite you to reach out to any member of our staff if you have questions or require support. Please begin your communications with your child’s teacher. If at any point after your initial communication you feel the need to speak with an administrator, do not hesitate to contact the appropriate Unit Principal (see below). We also have Counselors available to assist you! (see below)

Lastly, parent conferences will be Nov. 13th. Your teachers will reach out with more information!

Have a happy and safe October,

The Greenbriar Middle School will be using a new parent app, Stopfinder, for the upcoming school year. Stopfinder is the easy-to-use, all-in-one app that allows you to have the most accurate information about your student’s bus schedule at anytime from anywhere. In addition to displaying your student’s transportation information, Stopfinder includes a private messaging feature that will allow you to communicate directly with the Transportation Department and create GeoAlerts for your student, which will notify you when the bus has arrived or departed from any location on your student’s route.

The email address that is currently on file with the district will be used for Stopfinder setup and invitation. We encourage all parents whose student ride a school bus to download and activate your account to allow better communication about your student’s transportation needs.

Start the week of September 29th, please check your inbox for the Stopfinder invite to activate your account. The email will contain links to activate your account and download the app from either the Google Play Store or Apple’s App Store.

Please contact the Transportation Department at 440-885-2326 with questions.

STEM 5 Learner's Humility Gets Noticed!

This month's Student of the Month choice is rather ironic. See, Jackson Wolfe would prefer to go unnoticed, to fly under the radar, so to speak. Yet it is his humility that caught our attention! His respect for learning, his quiet nature and patience with others is what earned him recognition for setting such a wonderful example for others...even though he'd prefer that you didn't notice. Sorry, Jackson. We notice how awesome you are, and we're so lucky to have you as part of the STEM 5 family this year!

STEM 5 Bootcamp Acclimates Learners to Middle School STEM!

Learners survived STEM 5 Bootcamp during the first week with grace and perseverance. They generated thoughtful STEM 5 Rules, used a plethora of technology such as Canva, Google Slides and Google Draw, AND worked on design briefs to design, build and revise an organizational structure for their lockers. Wait! And they learned how to identify credible online sources, a critical skill for current times.

STEM 5 Celebrates Great Character with a Lock Box Challenge

At the end of each month, STEM 5 gathers for a Dojo Party, a celebration to recognize a month of responsible and respectful behavior. For September, these STEM 5 learners definitely cracked the code for what it takes to exhibit great character! Learners worked in teams to solve a series of lock box challenges. Their collaboration and intense focus unlocked big fun!

STEM 5 Brings Life to their Study of Ecosystems

STEM 5 learners created concept maps in order to launch their problem-based learning unit on ecosystems. They applied their research and background knowledge to design and build ecosystems in a pop bottle! They had to include elements of a meadow and pond ecosystem, and will be monitoring its health throughout the unit.

Worms can help save the planet?! WHAT??

STEM 5 launched our year-long vermicomposting project with the help of sixth grade STEM experts! STEM 5 has been vermicomposting for three years. It is our effort to not only divert food from the landfills which emits dangerous methane gas into the atmosphere, but also create nutrient-rich compost for plants! Guess how many pounds of cafeteria salad bar we’ve fed the worms so far? How many gallons?? Ask a STEM 5 learner!

The incredible weather is inspiring all our 8X students. Soon, we will be going on a field trip to the park, rewarded for good grades and excellent behavior. Students can enjoy the beauty of autumn and get some fresh air. Furthermore, we have been writing poems, journal entries, and drawing all things fall.

The following students do not need to be inspired, they are motivated, active, diligent learners every day.

Let us celebrate our students of the month.

Mrs. Porco-Skylee Blase

Mrs. Layhew-Taylor Ragin

Mr. Jaegers-Lincoln Eichenmiller

Mr. Vandervort-Kaden Fortelka

Mrs. Vangalio- Samanta Marin-Bravo

Our super star student of the month is Skylee Blase.

In English class, we are deep into our horror unit. My students are intrigued by Edgar Allen Poe and his terrifying tales. We revisited an old friend from seventh grade, The Headless Horseman, when we read a poem titled

The Hollow". I am quite impressed with their knowledge of literary elements and willingness to participate in class.

In math, variables are the subject of study.

Erosion and weathering are the topics of discussion and lessons in science.

We the people...The Constitution has been explored and the students were asked to choose an amendment they wanted to research and present to the class.
