8th GRADE PARENT MEETING FOR THE MATH AND SCIENCE CENTER
This is an application opportunity for 8th grade students who are currently placed in Algebra 1 or Geometry as their math class. Principal, Tonya Snyder, will be at WHS on April 22nd at 7 pm to talk with 8th grade parents about the opportunities at the Math and Science Center, which is located on the campus of Andrews University in Berrien Springs. If you and/or your child have interest in this opportunity for next year, please come to this meeting to learn more. Accepted students attend the Center half of a day and the high school the other half. WPS provides all of the transportation. She will also be making a presentation directly to students in their math class later this mointh.
TESTING FOR ALL 9TH-11TH GRADERS ON THURSDAY, APRIL 17TH
ALL students in grades 9-11 will take either the PSAT or SAT on Thursday. All students should be in school and ready to test starting at 8:10 AM. Please make sure that your child is well rested and ready to test. Breakfast and snacks will be provided to your child. ALL students will have lunch when testing is complete. 9TH and 10TH graders will head back to their normal classes when testing is complete.
JUNIORS ARE THE ONLY STUDENTS WHO ARE EXCUSED FOR THE REST OF THE SCHOOL DAY AFTER TESTING IS COMPLETE. Juniors who cannot leave the building may remain in the media center for the rest of the day. There will be no afternoon tech required for juniors as testing may not be complete by the time they need to leave the building. This absence will be excused.
SENIORS should not be in school on Thursday, as all teachers in the building will be proctoring the PSAT or SAT. Absences to the tech center will be excused for seniors. Seniors who can and want to drive themselves are welcome to attend.
Completing the PSAT and SAT are required for graduation from WHS. Students are encouraged to be in school and test with their class instead of coming out of class on a make up day to make up the testing. Juniors who miss this testing will be required to repeat the testing as seniors in order to graduate.
If you have made any appt. for your child outside of school on this day, it is much appreciated if the appt is rescheduled as all 9-11 grades in the state of Michigan are required to take these tests.

3. A concern was shared that websites are blocked for dual enrollment classes. If any students have this concern, email Ms. Powers or Mr. Tiefenbach.
4. 4. Juniors have not had a campus visit this year. Ms. Powers will work to get something in place for them. This was shared as a concern.
5. We started reviewing the most recent student voice survey results. The data that we reviewed this morning is below. Ms. Powers will continue to share out data each time that the team meets and looks at your responses to more questions.
IF YOU HAVE CONCERNS IN THE BUILDING THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE ADDRESSED, SHARE YOUR CONCERN WITH A TEAM MEMBER. THE TEAM MEETS EVERY TWO WEEKS WITH THE PRINCIPAL.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK!
WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT WATERVLIET? --STUDENT RESPONSES (THANK YOU DR. MOSHER)
PANTHER HOTLINE
If your child has a concern regarding anyone's safety in the building (student or staff), the Panther Hotline is an anonymous way to report the information to the building principal immediately. It is always preferred that the student come to the office to talk face to face about the concern, however if that is not possible, the Panther Hotline is the best way to get the information to building administration immediately. All students have been emailed this link. It is also posted around the school building.
https://forms.gle/iy8Nep5DZDjZYwsF7
Once completed, the information comes directly to the principal in the form of an email.
AFTER PROM INFORMATION

STUDENTS OF THE MONTH MARCH 2025
SENIOR, KYRA SULLIVAN
My family consists of my mom-- She works at Tri-County HeadStart. She is an incredibly strong and caring person and I am so grateful she is my mom. We have been through so much together and I am happy I had her by my side the whole way through
My family also includes my dad--He is such an amazing person and I am so thankful that I have someone like him in my life. The fact he has been there for me when I needed him is way more than enough.
Additionally, I have my sister who is a really good person and she has also helped me through a lot. I feel like I am closer to her than anyone and I can really depend on her in a way of support and she can do the same vice versa. I am so happy she is my sister no matter how much we annoy one another.
Last but not least, my brother--He is a big bundle of joy and really knows how to brighten someone's day. He is so sweet and caring for everyone around him and I am so grateful to have him in my life.
My favorite teacher so far is Mrs. O'Toole. She is such an understanding teacher and genuinely helps you if need be. She isn't really strict but knows how to keep her class under control, and I really appreciate her as a person.
My favorite class so far is Personal Finance. I get a lot of work done in the class all while doing the work within the class. Mr.Dimino is also a very energetic teacher, so having a hard day in his class isn't really an option because of how energetic he is and how interactive he is with each and every student.
I am currently playing varsity soccer for the school.
I honestly enjoy doing homework in my free time, but I also enjoy walking around my block or watching movies.
After High School, I plan to attend Saginaw Valley State University, and go into the Veterinary career path.
I am proud to be a Watervliet Panther because of how encouraging the staff is and how helpful they can be, especially Mrs. Tyler and Mrs. Dawson. They make sure that students are on task and get the help they need to be a successful person in the future, which is an amazing environment to be in.
SENIOR, MADDISON ROELL
I'm really close to my younger and older brother and have a strong bond with my grandma. I don't have a favorite teacher but Mrs. Lefor and Mr. Dimino have both helped me a lot throughout my school year. My favorite class has probably been art because that class lets me work on my projects on my own and it's like a breather for me. I tend to read the most in my free time. After high school I am planning to go to Andrews University, and I am proud to be a WHS Panther because of the opportunities I have been given and the help I have had to push to my graduation.
SOPHOMORE, EIDER FERNANDEZ ARANBURU
I have two families, one in the Basque Country (where I am from) with my mom, my aunt, my grandma and my grandpa. I also have a family here consisting of my sister, two brothers, mom and dad.
My favorite teacher is Mrs. Hollandsworth because she is very nice to all her students and she always finds a way to put a smile on our faces.
My favorite class is U.S. History, because it's very entertaining and fun.
I am involved in track and field and band and in my free time I like to talk to my family and friends and listen to music.
After high school I’m planning to go to college, but I don’t know what I want to do yet.
I’m proud to be a WHS Panther because I get to experience being an exchange student here.
SOPHOMORE, BRYCE TEITSMA
A main member of my family is my Dad. For about a year and half, maybe two years now it has just been my Dad and I. I look up to him because he works hard for me every day and is a good role model. He enjoys doing things like fishing and hunting. He loves helping me get better at sport I love and he is always willing to help me with anything I need.
My favorite teacher is Mr. Andrews. He makes class entertaining everyday and I enjoy getting to go to class and learn more about history--my favorite unit definitely being World War II.
My favorite class is Debate. I really like Debate because I get to learn how to be a better public speaker and I get to argue with people. I enjoy Debate because it’s a class where I can write and prove points, which I find entertaining. Some sports I am involved in are football, basketball, and currently baseball. I enjoy each and every one of the sports and am currently having a great time in baseball. My coaches are all very nice and enjoy doing what they do.
In my free time I enjoy going outside and playing basketball as well as riding dirt bikes with my friends. After high school I plan to attend trade school and learn to be a mechanical engineer and work on cars, bikes, anything really that has an engine. I am proud to be a Watervliet Panther because I have gone to Watervliet since I was in young 5’s and plan to stay loyal to Watervliet all the way until graduation. I enjoy the sports programs this school has to offer, even if we don’t have a winning season, I get to do it with the people I enjoy being around. Those are the reasons why I'm proud to be a Panther.
JUNIOR, KAMI RATHFON
I have 6 siblings,(Cody, Haley,Owen, Sophie, and my parents Clint and Kori) and my dog JJ.
My favorite teacher is Mrs. Hunt, because I've been doing art since I was little. Mrs. Bruce is also a favorite because I like reading. In my free time, I like painting/drawing, playing with my dog, and playing catch with a football with my dad and brother, Owen. After high school I plan on going to art school or becoming a veterinarian assistant. I'm proud to be a Panther because since I moved here I've made friends and the teachers have been helpful with my education advancement.
JUNIOR, IZZY TARANTINO
I'm Izzy Tarantino, and I have a wonderful family. I live with my father, stepmom, and stepbrother 50% of the time, and I live with my mother the other 50% of the time. I love my dad because he always guides me in the right direction and makes me laugh and smile no matter what. He gives me good advice and is the best dad I could ask for. My step mom and step brother are both amazing people as well and I'm very glad to have them in my family. My mom is an amazing mom who always is there for me and she helps me deal with things in life. She always helps me with problems and encourages me to be the best person I can be and is the best mom I could ever ask for.
My favorite teacher in the school is Mrs. Lefor. She is an amazing teacher and she teaches in a way that is easy to understand. I have taken Spanish one and two with her and I've learned so much in her class. Everyday I had her class I found myself smiling and laughing and it was an amazing experience. She's such a sweet and amazing lady and I recommend Spanish to any student interested.
My favorite class in the school has been Psychology. It's very interesting and learning about the different topics and watching documentaries on them is so amazing. The class is structured very well and is very easy to understand and keep up in. Mr. Weber is a great teacher as well, which makes the class even better.
I am involved in the Virtue Club every Friday morning at 7:30 in the cafe. This club is super fun, and it's a great way to build amazing relationships with your peers, as well as build a strong connection with Christ. This club has truly been amazing for me so far. I encourage anyone interested to join; it's great!
In my free time, I like participating in some of my favorite hobbies, like playing guitar or collecting different kinds of rocks, as well as, spending time with my family and rollerblading.
After high school, I plan to start a business in photography. I have learned a lot about it from my stepmom, who is a photographer herself. I would also like to get a job in cleaning different spaces because cleaning is an amazing stress reliever for me, and it makes me happy.
I am proud to be a WHS Panther because of all of the amazing students and staff here who always surround me with joy, passion, and confidence, as well as, the useful and interesting lessons learned in each class and all of the great opportunities provided here at the high school.
FRESHMAN, KATELYN BROWN
My family consists of my dad, Dave, my mom, Staci, and my sister, Alyssa who is a senior at WHS. I do not have a favorite teacher this year. They are all supportive and encouraging, but Mrs. Brant has taught me things that I normally would not learn in school, such as photography and designing. It is obvious she enjoys teaching Yearbook and helping us create the best book we can. My favorite class is Yearbook because I enjoy designing the layouts and capturing moments throughout the year. I have learned different techniques in taking pictures and how to use them to design the best layouts. I am involved in cross country, basketball, soccer, student council, and student advisory council. In my free time I like to camp with my family, travel, go to the beach, and spend time with friends. After high school, I plan on attending college to study nursing. I would like to be a travel nurse so I can see new places and travel the world. I am proud to be a WHS Panther because the teachers care about the students and there are lots of opportunities to be involved in activities.
FRESHMAN, CADENCE PHILLIPS
In my family, it’s just me, my mom, my dad, my 11-year-old brother, and our two dogs and 16 ducks. My favorite teacher has to be Ms. Lefor because she’s incredibly understanding and caring, making me feel valued in her class. As for my favorite class, it’s English {9} with Mrs. Simmons. The class is always engaging, and my peers really add to the discussions during our Socratic Seminars. I’m currently involved in several activities! I was the wrestling team manager this year, earning my varsity letter, and I’m also part of the track and field throwing team working towards another letter. Additionally, I play the baritone in both the marching and concert band, which I really enjoy. In my free time, I love doing jigsaw puzzles, any kind of word puzzles, and building LEGO sets. I also enjoy visiting a friend’s barn to work with and ride her horse, Blossom. After high school, I plan to pursue an associate's degree in sports medicine from Lake Michigan Community College and then move on to a 4-year university, likely NMU or WMU, to get my master’s in sports medicine. Eventually, I’d like to move to Canada and work as a sports medicine specialist. Lastly, I’m proud to be a WHS Panther because this school has given me a true sense of belonging. Everyone has been so welcoming since I started in eighth grade.

PRESS BOX PLAYER OF THE WEEK --MOEKO CRAGO
Moeko Crago is a junior at Watervliet High School and was a member of the Lady Panther basketball team this winter. She was named the Player of the Week for April 3rd for the Tri-City Player Press Box. Moeko was nominated for this honor by her basketball coaches, John Guillean and Ben Loshbough. They felt that she was deserving of the recognition because she had a break out campaign on the basketball court this season, helping her team capture a district championship. In the team's 25 games, she scored 126 total points, which equates to over 5 points per game. She scored a career high 21 points in a victory over Schoolcraft on February 4th, while she eclipsed double figures three additional times, including 15 points against Fennville, 13 points against Benton Harbor, and 10 points against Holland Black River. She was a fierce competitor, who got the most out of her game. Moeko is also a member of the marching band in addition to playing basketball and golf, and being involved in school activities. She has a fondness for high school band, She enjoys starting her day by playing music and going outside for class, to rehearse the marching band show. CONGRATULATIONS MOEKO!

MATH MYTH #4. It’s okay not to be good at math. (THANK YOU MR. DIMINO)
How do we sympathize with someone who reports that they hated math growing up? “It’s okay. I wasn’t good at math either.” One of the worst things parents can do is to transfer their math phobias to their kids, by either telling them horror stories of their own experience in math or by not holding equally high expectations for math as they would for the other subjects, especially reading.
Why it’s a myth: Imagine if we applied the same argument to reading. To say that it’s fine for some to not be able to read is ludicrous. Do we say that a person who enjoys reading and reads several books each month has the “reading gene”? To the child who struggles to read, do we advise them to avoid it and focus on physical education instead? Mathematical or quantitative literacy is just as important as regular literacy. That doesn’t mean that everybody has to become a professional mathematician, just like we don’t expect all people to be literature professors. Mathematics, like reading, is a human right. Everybody deserves to be able to make sense of the world around them by noticing patterns and relationships, validating and critiquing claims, and yes, being able to determine whether the cashier properly applied the 20% off coupon to their purchase.
Kernel of truth: It’s okay that learning math takes time. It’s okay to enjoy other subjects more than math. It’s okay to choose a non-STEM career because other disciplines’ ways of thinking come more naturally to you. But avoiding math like the plague and thereby forfeiting opportunities to develop mathematical reasoning is not an advisable or sustainable solution.
Why this myth is problematic: The ability to think mathematically opens doors: to jobs and careers, yes, but also to regular activities of citizenship, like reading and understanding the news, budgeting and paying bills, and making informed decisions based on data. A person who is comfortable with being “bad at math” and perhaps even gets this message reinforced by well-meaning family members experiences unnecessary stress and anxiety during these activities or even avoids them entirely, missing out on opportunities for personal growth.
