ALL THINGS WORK TOGETHER FOR GOD'S GOOD PURPOSES
"And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose." Romans 8:28

Thankful for Children and Homework?
A while ago, a colleague shared a research article with me titled “Don’t Help Your Kids With Their Homework.” The title caught my eye both as someone in professional education, and as a parent of two children who are now young adults; and now a grandchild.
I recall countless evenings of helping my kids ‘review’ their homework, often times wondering ‘what is the point.’ It was often very challenging for me to not ‘just do it’ and move things along for them, even though I knew better. I knew that the struggle was as important as the content being taught. I knew from my formal teacher training that children learn as much, if not more, from struggling with concepts and being challenged, as they do by being given the ‘correct’ answer (see The Learning Pit). Nonetheless, the temptation to jump in and ‘rescue’ my children was great. One strategy that seemed to help me find common ground in my own mind was to get my kids to step back a bit and ask questions about their homework. Such as:
“What didn’t they know and what did they know about the problem?”
“Why they thought the concept was being taught to them?”
“What if I just did their homework for them, what would really happen in their lives?”
To my surprise, teachers shared with me that children sometimes also asked similar questions of their teachers in the classroom. This led to interesting conversations, and more often than not, they completed their homework themselves and earned their own grades.
Based on my experience, I believe children need the love and understanding of parents to support them throughout life. The article referenced above, shared findings that indicate that one powerful type of parental involvement is when parents go to great lengths to seek out effective schools for their children, while others accept the status quo at the school around the corner. I know that RHLS parents have gone to great lengths to seek out RHLS as a school of choice for their child, this is a choice and form of parental involvement that will have lasting effects; eternally lasting effects.
As we approach Thanksgiving, I hope that we are all thankful for children and their homework. Thankful to have the opportunity to be challenged by both children and their homework. More so, thankful for a community of Christian believers here at Red Hill Lutheran Church and School who together form a foundation of support and encouragement to live for Christ each and every day.
God’s richest blessings on your family this Thankful Holiday Season!

GARDEN
Dear Parents,
The RHLS Learning Garden is a curriculum based, multi-sensory, hands-on experience designed to enrich the student's knowledge and appreciation of God's creation. Garden curriculum supports what is taught in the classroom. For example, 4th graders learn about California, so they plant a California Agriculture garden and learn by touch, sight, smell and taste. What a way to reinforce the lesson content in the garden and in their classroom!!!
There is a Fall garden and a Spring garden. Both have planting and harvest visits. You can sign up for 1 or more teachers (use the TABS at the top of the page to sign up for other grades). It is very helpful if you sign up for all 4 visits for a teacher for continuity since each visit is based on what was taught and experienced during prior visits. However, if that is not possible, please sign up for what you can as we are grateful for any time you can commit to!
We also encourage grandparents or other relatives to participate. It's a great way to have a wonderful experience with your child or grandchild (the kids are so proud when their parent, grandparent, etc. are at the visit with them!).
You will receive 1 volunteer hour for every visit you attend. Since we get so many wonderful volunteers this year, we are asking for 1 volunteer from each class to LEAD the lesson; please don't let this hinder your willingness to volunteer. "LEADING" might mean reading a book or guiding students to plant or telling them about the craft or how to observe the garden and fill out their worksheet - guided instructions are provided in advance so please do not be intimidated - this is an easy roll and allows our garden leaders the chance to help kids and answer questions on a more individual basis. Plus, the kids love to see their parents’ involvement! If you are interested, please add in the comments that you are willing to lead.
Garden Preparation/Clean Out Days are not student visit days but typically on a weekend or afterschool where we need to clean out the garden to ready it for a new season of planting or where we need to make sure the garden looks spic and span for Open House. These are great opportunities for working parents to volunteer outside of the work day and usually go pretty quickly if we have lots of help! You will receive service hours for every hour you work.
Garden Maintenance Days are times between planting and harvest where we just need some extra help maintaining the garden, mostly pulling weeds, ensuring garden is clean, etc. These can be done in your own time (within the week noted) and will receive 1 hour of volunteer time for each time slot.
Questions? Contact Lindsay Manning at asulinz@hotmail.com or 949-307-5667. Thank you for helping us! We look forward to another year of our learning garden!
SCHOOL SAFETY
Hello there!
Thank you for subscribing to our "Download" newsletter. I've received great feedback from parents about how the information we share in the Download helps them feel informed and confident. I love that. Please share it with anyone!
This is a quick "non-Download" message, and I have two things:
- I need help in a focus group. We're exploring an idea for families and I need your input! If you want to learn more, please go here.
- I wrote a deeply personal post about sin, social media, and The Anxious Generation. I'd love your thoughts. If you want to read it, please go here.
Note: I know not all PYE followers are Christians but I think even non-Christians might find it interesting. #delayistheway!

RED HILL LUTHERAN CHURCH NEWS
Pastor's Corner
Dear Red Hill Lutheran School Families,
God’s Word reminds us that…
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us…” (Hebrews 12.1)
The “great cloud of witnesses” that the book of Hebrews describes are those men and women who lived faithful lives, serving our Lord and others and now rest from their labors in heaven. According to Scripture, they are saints.
In the ancient, Christian calendar, November 1st is recognized as “All Saints Day.” All Saints Day dates back to approximately 610 A.D. when the Pantheon in Greece, turned into a Christian Church, was dedicated to all saints. The 1662 Book of Common Prayer describes that this Christian holy-day (holiday) calls us to gratefully remember those who have died in the Christian faith and “the unity of Christians of all ages, countries, and races in Christ, and the perfection of that unity in heaven." Every follower of Christ is a member of God’s family, a family that transcends time and space; a spiritual family that is current and ancient. All Saints Day is an annual reminder of this incredible truth.
While All Saints Day honors those who have died in Christ, every believer in Jesus is considered a saint. In Ephesians 1.1, Saint Paul opens his letter to the church in Ephesus this way:
Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, to the saints who are in Ephesus, and are faithful in Christ Jesus: 2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
The word “saint” comes from the Greek word hagios, which means “consecrated to God, holy.” As the Ephesians text above illustrates, typically, this word is plural, i.e. “saints,” referring to the church. Saints are not perfect people; saints are people being made perfect through Jesus Christ. The theological term for this is sanctification. As disciples of Jesus and through the power of the Holy Spirit, the divine image within each one of us, corrupted by sin, is being restored to reflect the One whose divine image was never corrupted—Jesus! One day, that perfection (sanctification) will be completed in heaven, where with the “communion of saints” we will surround the throne of God celebrating and praising God (Revelation 20 and 21)!
Again, while all Christians are saints, All Saints Day is a time to specifically remember those who have died in faith, thanking God for their lives and witness. As Lutherans, we believe the Bible doesn’t teach us to pray to the saints (Matthew 6.6), rather, we are encouraged to remember the saints and to allow the memory of their faith to spur us on to deeper faithfulness and hope. Hebrews 11, sometimes referred to as the “Hall of Faith,” reminds us that God’s faithful saints persevered in the face of conflicts and hardships because of their faith and the faithfulness of God:
“And what more shall I say? For time would fail me to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets—33 who through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, 34 quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, were made strong out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight...They went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, mistreated—38 of whom the world was not worthy—wandering about in deserts and mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth. 39 And all these, though commended through their faith, did not receive what was promised, 40 since God had provided something better for us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect” (Hebrews 11.32-34, 38-40).
One of the great hymns of the church, "For All the Saints" is traditionally sung in honor of All Saints Day. It encourages believers to look across 2000 years of Christian history and think of the millions now enjoying rest and salvation in the presence of God. It’s also meant to provide encouragement to believers here and now to press on, looking forward to the glorious day when all things will be made new! It is this Christian hope that is reflected in the hymn, “For All the Saints...”
“And when the strife is fierce, the warfare long, Steals on the ear the distant triumph song, And hearts are brave again, and arms are strong. Alleluia, Alleluia!”
As we honor All Saints Day in November, take time to thank God for the saints in your life, especially those who are now with Jesus—parents, siblings, children, spouses’ and friends. Hold on to the hope that we will see our loved ones again in God’s glorious kingdom! Thank God that He has called you to be a saint. If you are going through a difficult time right now, or someone you love is struggling, consider the saints of the Bible and the saints in your own life that have left you an example of perseverance and faithfulness, remembering that one day, God will heal the brokenness in our lives and in this world! Finally, consider the awesome reality that one day you will be remembered for your faithfulness and perseverance.
On All Saints Day and every day, may we pause to remember that we are members of God’s family—past, present, and future—we are saints!
“And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, 10 so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; 11 being strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy; 12 giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. 13 He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins (Colossians 1.9-14).
Have a great November!
Sincerely in Christ,
Pastor Seth
RHLC YOUTH & FAMILY MINISTRY
Hi Red Hill Families!
November is the month of gratitude. As we have said previously, Red Hill's Youth and Family Ministry (YFM) Team is devoted to the whole family throughout all the phases and all the seasons.
Both the Fuller Institute and the authors of the Phase Books we offer as parenting resources talk about the importance of identifying five adults who are on your child’s “team” praying for and supporting them. Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to step into that circle of influence for your family, spanning all the ages and stages of a family from a baby’s first cry to the final breath of a grandparent or loved one. We take this role very seriously and that is why we take a personal approach to ministry.
In addition to offering weekly programming in each ministry area, there are a few dates to put on your calendar of upcoming opportunities to come together to worship, learn, connect, serve and have some fun, too! Please join us as you are able.

We would also like to share with you a November Gratitude Challenge. This challenge can be done throughout the month, all together, or individually. Thanksgiving Dinner is another great opportunity for every family member to take their turn with the Gratitude Challenge. CLICK HERE to access the Gratitude Family Challenge.
As we strive to purposefully equip our church and school families, we would like to say “thank you” for allowing us to be a part of your lives. You are so loved! It is our hope and prayer that through the coming weeks, you and your children’s hearts will be filled with gratitude knowing, that you have a place to belong and also know just how much you are loved by our Lord, by our YFM Team and by your Red Hill family.
“For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, that according to the riches of His glory He may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.” Ephesians 3:14-19

On behalf of our staff and Oktoberfest Event Team, we want to thank you so very much for making this year’s Oktoberfest event, and our fourth, annual Trunk-or-Treat, such an amazing success.
We were so fortunate that God blessed us with such a beautiful, sunny day. We think that the beautiful weather brought out so many more families this year and we have received so many favorable comments.
From the generous amount of candy donations and baked goods received, to all of the volunteers willing to help with whatever was needed, to the food prep and serving team and to our amazing, creative trunk hosts ... Everything was fantastic. We are so grateful for you and know that none of this can be possible without your generous support! Thank you to all of our Red Hill families who joined us, making this event such a wonderful success! Here are a few photos of the event.

Through Sunday morning programming and Connection Events, we strive to partner well with families as they teach their Tiny Ones to Trust the Savior! T.O.T.S.
Children, ages six weeks to five years old are welcome to join us in Classroom 11 on Sunday mornings during both worship services and during our DiscipleU Educational hour.
"Blessed is the one whose delight is in the law of the LORD!" Psalm 1
In November, T.O.T.S. continues their study of God's good design in the Ten Commandments. It is truly a blessing to delight together in God's laws and rejoice in Christ's perfect fulfillment of the law for us! He enlivens us to walk in love toward God and one another daily and teaches us right from wrong to bless us richly. We invite your little ones to join us on Sunday mornings and hope you have an opportunity to review the poem we are learning together at home — writing the words of our King on their hearts!
For the safety of all children, our adult team members are background checked and fingerprinted as well as CPR and First aid certified.

Student Ministry November Teaching Series: ON REPEAT
A series on LOVING LIKE JESUS
Have you ever found a playlist that felt like it was made exactly for you? When music connects with us, we'll want to play the songs on repeat because we never get tired of hearing them. When Jesus taught his followers what it looked like to live for God, he wanted them to get that same feeling, too.
In this 4-week series from the book of Mark, we'll take a look at how we can make loving like Jesus a daily part of our lives. He shows us that listening, loving others, caring for their needs, and offering encouragement are worth repeating.
If you have any questions or if you need more information, please feel free to contact Student Ministry Coordinator, Tim Rivera, at trivera@redhillchurch.org.
Friendsgiving Feast
We have so much to be thankful for every day, but we want to celebrate this Thanksgiving Eve with a meal and fellowship for the middle school students. All middle school students are invited to join us on this special night as we enjoy a meal together, and then afterward, we will attend Red Hill’s Thanksgiving Eve worship service together with the whole church body. If you have any questions or need more information, please feel free to contact Student Ministry Coordinator, Tim Rivera, at trivera@redhillchurch.org.
