Message from Principal McKillop

Good Afternoon, Cougar Nation!

Congratulations to the students who were recognized with Cougar C.A.R.E.S. Awards this month. Faculty and students can nominate students each month for the award. The goal is to celebrate students who demonstrate the actions described in the ConVal C.A.R.E.S. (Community, Adaptability, Respect, Engagement, and/or Safety) behavior guidelines.

Our very own Mr. Heider has been selected as the Teacher of the Year by the New Hampshire Council for the Social Studies! Congratulations also go to Senior Gabby Ramsden who has been selected as a finalist for the US Senate Youth Program and to sophomore Gavin Niemela who has been chosen CTE Student of the Month. Celebrations are also in order for the members of the ConVal High School Concert Choir who performed at the Keene State College Cantate! Festival; the choir was the largest entry with over 45 student voices and the adjudicators lauded their vocal performance, focus, and stage presence. Please see more details below.

I also want to congratulate our student-athletes who have concluded their fall seasons. This week both soccer teams and volleyball competed hard in state tournament games. I enjoyed cheering on our talented students and observing school spirit at the events. Football and Spirit will conclude their seasons this evening and our cross country teams will compete at the NHIAA State meet tomorrow in Derryfield. I also want to thank all our FCVA volunteers for working our concession stands and helping in so many ways during the fall sports season. We couldn't do it without you!

As you will read below, there are so many things happening inside and outside of our classrooms. I am always in awe of the creativity displayed by our teachers and students on a consistent basis. Learning continues outside of the our building walls and our students often return from trips with many exciting stories to share.

Next week, I hope you will join us in the Lucy Hurlin Theatre, right here on campus, as ConVal Theatre Arts Presents Disney-Pixar Finding Nemo Jr.! There will be a performance at 7:00pm on Friday, November 3, and two shows on Saturday, November 4.

As October comes to a close, I hope you enjoy the last few days of unseasonably warm weather!

Have a wonderful weekend, and GO COUGARS!

Best,

Heather

JobCorps Visit on December 1!

Job Corps is a nationwide career training program that helps eligible young people ages 16 through 24 complete their high school education, trains them for meaningful careers, and assists them with obtaining employment.

Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors who are interested in learning about JobCorps are encouraged to attend the field trip to the JobCorps campus in Manchester, NH on Friday, December 1. Permission slips are available in the School Counseling Office. More info about JobCorps: newhampshire.jobcorps.gov/

The Counseling Department hosted the NH Higher Education Assistance Foundation (NHHEAF) presentation on October 25 for senior parents and students about the topic of "Paying for College." Pictured are Rebecca Dunn, school counselor, and Moira Valenti, NHHEAF counselor, speaking to a group of students and parents.

School counselors are working with seniors on their college applications during TASC.

Ronan Clough

Senior Ronan Clough will appear in an upcoming video talking about the benefits of Career and Technical Education (CTE) and the welding program he is participating in at the Phaze Welding Technology Center. The Region 14 Applied Technology Center is in the queue for a renovation, partially funded by the State, and the district will be running a capital campaign to offset the cost to taxpayers.

Concert Choir

The ConVal High School Concert Choir was invited to perform in Keene State College’s Cantate! Festival on Friday, October 20 with other high school choirs throughout New England. The choir was the largest entry in the festival with over 45 student voices.

Their program choices of “Ad Astra (To the Stars…)” by Jacob Naverud and “On This Silent Night” by Sarah Quartel were both well received by the adjudicating voice and choral faculty at Keene State. The choir was applauded for their quality of programming, their intonation, tone, diction, phrasing and their preparation and research of each piece. Some additional comments from the faculty praised the choir: “the energy of the group is amazing!” “the students were professional and brave!” and “great visual focus and stage presence!”

Our thanks to the Keene State College faculty clinicians, our dedicated parent volunteers and staff who came with us and our accompanist. Bravo to our students for their hard work in pursuit of their vocal music performance!

ConVal Theatre Arts Presents Finding Nemo Jr.

Disney’s Finding Nemo Jr. is a 60-minute musical adaptation of the beloved 2003 Pixar movie Finding Nemo.

Marlin, an anxious and over-protective clownfish, lives in the Great Barrier Reef with his kid Nemo who longs to explore the world beyond their anemone home. But when Nemo is captured and taken to Sydney, Marlin faces his fears and sets off on an epic adventure across the ocean.

With the help of lovable characters like the optimistic Dory, the laid-back sea turtle Crush, and the supportive Tank Gang, Marlin and Nemo both overcome challenges on their journey to find each other and themselves.

Performances are Friday, November 3, at 7:00 pm, and Saturday, November 4, at 2:00 pm and 7:00 pm.

German 4's Visit To RiverMead

ConVal's German 4 class visited the RiverMead Lifecare Community in Peterborough where students presented about Oktoberfest, sang and danced, and chatted with residents. Everyone had a wonderful time doing community outreach.

Woodworking

Students in Woodworking are taking on individual projects.

Senior Colton Webb is putting the finishing touches on his bandsaw box, which he personalized by using a piece of wood with a live edge. A live edge defines the unfinished edge of the woodwork. It is the periphery of wood not altered by hand tools or woodworking machinery. As a result, the piece retains the original characteristics of a tree, i.e. its shape and bark.

Freshman Ethan Danforth is working on a combination mail / key holder as a gift for his parent.

Chris Heider Named Teacher of the Year

Congratulations to Chris Heider who has been selected as the Teacher of the Year by the New Hampshire Council for the Social Studies. Previously selected as the Rotary Teacher of the Year (2016), Heider was recognized for the comprehensive depth of his knowledge in his field, for being a rigorous teacher with high expectations, for being caring and compassionate, and for instilling a desire to learn in his students. The awards ceremony took place at the Courtyard Marriott hotel in Concord on October 20.

Ramsden a United States Senate Youth Program Finalist

Congratulations to senior Gabby Ramsden (center) who has just been chosen as one of eleven finalists for the United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP).

The USSYP is a unique educational experience for outstanding high school students interested in pursuing careers in public service. Student delegates are selected at the state level and will have the opportunity to hear major policy addresses by Senators, cabinet members, officials from the Departments of State and Defense and directors of other federal agencies, as well as participate in a meeting with a Justice of the US Supreme Court.

Ramsden has been a long-standing member of the Youth & Government program, a model-government co-curricular program offered at ConVal High School; Chris Heider serves as the club’s advisor. Last year, she was accepted into the American Politics Academy program at Harvard University where she learned about policy making, campaigns and elections, political debates, international relations, game theory and political theory, among numerous other topics.

The next step in the USSYP selection process is the interview with the Selection Committee which will take place at the NH Department of Education in early November.

Human Growth and Development Class

Students in Mrs. Grossi's Human Growth and Development class are discussing various birth defects and how they can affect a child's development. Gavin Niemela has earned the CTE Student of the Month award at the Region 14 Applied Technology Center.

Mr. Lucas shared that “Gavin is always positive in Game Programming class. He is always willing to help other students. He often comes up with solutions to problems before they are even recognized as potential problems.”

Geometry Class

Keene State College Methods student Sami Blair taught Ms. Hinton's Geometry class how to find the area of a heart by folding paper and creating triangles. She then related previous content of Areas of Triangles and Lines of Reflection with upcoming content of Congruent Triangles to find the overall area of a heart and compared areas throughout the room.
