SMS Booster Fundraiser at Red Robin on Saturday, April 19, 11am-11pm

Our SMS Booster parents are hosting a fundraiser at Red Robin restaurant in Bonney Lake on Saturday, April 19 from 11am to 11pm. Whether you dine in or order online (follow directions on the flyer), simply mention the SMS fundraiser and 20% of your sales will be counted toward the fundraiser. Thank you for supporting SMS students and staff.

State Testing Schedule: Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBA) and 8th Grade Science

Our staff is proud of our students and the learning growth they have made this year. We are looking forward to our students showing what they know on the state tests. We use these results to inform our teaching practices and design instructional programs for our students, as well as prepare them for high school since one of the high school graduation requirements is to show proficiency on state tests.

Our students’ performances on state tests over the years have contributed to SMS being considered one of the highest performing middle schools in the area.

To provide the least disruption for our students, students will take the state tests in their core classes with their core teachers. Therefore, students will take the ELA SBA in their ELA class, the Math SBA in their math class, and 8th graders will take the Science state test in their science class. Teachers will notify students of their respective testing schedules. In general, below are the testing windows at SMS:

All Grades ELA SBA, April 29 - May 9

8th Grade Science Test: May 13 - May16

All Grades Math SBA, May 20 - May 30

To help your child do their best on these tests, make sure your child:

  • gets plenty of sleep the night before

  • eats a healthy breakfast

  • gets to school on time

  • brings a charged chromebook and pencil

  • brings a positive, can-do attitude!

Dress Code Reminder

Spring fever is shining brightly on Sumner Middle School and our staff have been having conversations with students about dress code expectations.

Please review our dress code expectations on page 9 of the SMS handbook with your child.

When a student asks why we have our dress code, we remind them:

  • An important life lesson is to know that often we dress differently for different occasions. For example, what we wear on the weekend with our friends might be different from what we wear to a job or school.

  • Our school has 11 to 15 year olds in our building. When students get to high school, students are more mature and granted more independence with their clothing choice.

Some of the dress code reminders we continue to have with students :

  • Clothing must cover the stomach and chest.

  • Shorts, skirts, and dresses may appear no shorter than the end of the fingertips (arm extended straight down side).

  • Hats and other head coverings may be worn on campus and in the building as long as a student’s face and ears are fully visible. Bandanas may not be worn or displayed with the exception of spirit days and other school approved activities.

    • Hoods are not permitted since it prevents staff from identifying students.

  • Footwear must be worn at all times and must be appropriate for the activity.

  • Undergarments must be covered.

  • Holes, tears, mesh or other see-through materials in garments may not be in areas that clothing is expected to cover.

*All dress requirements must be met in all positions (sitting, standing, bending, reaching) while attending school.
