Parent Power-Up
Parent Power-Up: Navigating Student Success and Inspiring Career Exploration
A new semester brings new opportunities for students to grow, discover, and dream big about their futures. As parents, you play a vital role in guiding your child’s career journey, and the start of 2025 is the perfect time to inspire them to think boldly, explore their interests, and set meaningful goals.
Below are ideas tailored to each stage of your child’s development, designed to foster career inspiration, help them discover their unique occupational identity, and set the foundation for a bright future.
K-5th Grade: Spark Imagination and Curiosity
At this age, it is all about planting seeds of wonder and excitement about the possibilities ahead.
“Dream Big” Career Poster Party: Help your child create a poster showcasing their dreams and aspirations. Include drawings, magazine cutouts, or simple descriptions of careers they find interesting. Highlight diverse and unconventional jobs to expand their perspective.
Career-Inspired Playtime: Turn playtime into a career adventure! Build a “mini-city” at home where your child can explore being a chef, engineer, artist, or scientist. Rotate roles to show how every job plays a part in making a community thrive.
Everyday Heroes Exploration: Highlight the roles of people they interact with daily - like librarians, bus drivers, or nurses - and discuss how these careers contribute to the world. Visit places like libraries or fire stations to let them learn firsthand.
Create a “Career Storytime” Ritual: Read stories about characters in different jobs, from astronauts to zookeepers. Mix in books with diverse characters and global careers to inspire an inclusive and holistic vision of the future.
6th-8th Grade: Cultivate Passion and Exploration
Middle school is a time for discovering interests and beginning to imagine future paths.
Passion Project Goals: Work with your child to choose a project based on something they love. If they are into gaming, they could research careers in game design or coding. If they love animals, they could explore veterinary science. Help them set measurable goals, like creating a small portfolio or presenting their project to the family.
Explore Global Career Perspectives: Encourage your child to learn about careers worldwide. Research how architects design homes in different countries or how conservationists protect wildlife globally. Incorporate cultural exploration into their career journey.
Career Collage Vision Board: Provide magazines, newspapers, and online resources to help your child create a collage of careers that interest them. Add quotes from role models and ideas for skills they would like to learn this year. You and your child could create a digital vision board on Canva for free!
Career Chats with Role Models: Set up informal talks with family, friends, or neighbors from diverse professional backgrounds. These conversations can help your child see the many paths available - even inside the same company - and inspire them to think creatively about their future.
9th-12th Grade: Define Goals and Build Skills for Success
High school is about taking actionable steps toward achieving career goals.
Personal Career Roadmap: Sit down with your teen to map out their career journey. Include milestones like internships, certifications, college applications, or starting a business. Emphasize flexibility and adaptability as they explore.
Career Showcase Night: Host an informal career event at home or in your community. Invite professionals from various fields, including trades, the arts, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), and entrepreneurship, to share their journeys. Encourage students to ask questions and make connections.
Skill-Building Saturdays: Dedicate one Saturday a month to learning a new skill tied to a potential career interest - like cooking, coding, or photography. Look for free online classes or community workshops to make it accessible and inclusive.
Financial Goal Setting: Work with your child to set financial goals tied to their career aspirations. Research scholarships, apprenticeships, and other ways to fund their future education or training. This helps them see the connection between planning and success.
Stay Connected with Dallas ISD Workforce Development: Our department oversees the Dallas ISD Internship Program. By staying connected with us through this newsletter and our social media channels, you and your student will always stay informed about these opportunities. Who knows? It might lead to your student’s first job after graduation!
Every step in your child’s career journey is a chance to celebrate their individuality and unique talents. By fostering curiosity, encouraging exploration, and setting actionable goals, you’re helping your child build a foundation for lifelong success.
Let’s make 2025 the year of dreaming boldly, acting intentionally, and inspiring careers for all!

Education Through Application
Teachers, you are more than educators - you are connectors, bridging the gap between the classroom and home. This month, we focus on equipping parents with the knowledge and tools to actively engage in their children’s academic success and career exploration journey. By fostering collaboration between educators and families, we empower students to dream big, set goals, and achieve success.
Host a Parent Workshop: “Career Conversations at Home”
Bring Parents into the Career Exploration Process
Workshop Overview: Host an evening or weekend workshop with your campus designed to help parents understand their critical role in career readiness. Begin with a presentation on why early career exploration matters, and provide parents with practical strategies for starting career conversations with their children.
What to Include:
Sample open-ended questions like:
"What type of activities make you lose track of time?"
"If you could solve one problem in the world, what would it be?"
Tips for linking household activities to career skills (e.g., problem-solving while fixing a bike, teamwork during a family project).
An introduction to career exploration tools like Texas Career Check, Dallas College Career Coach, or local resources through Dallas ISD Workforce Development.
Why It Is Effective: Many parents want to support their children but feel unsure where to start. This workshop provides them with actionable steps to make career exploration part of their everyday interactions.

Highlight Parent Involvement in Career Day
Creating a Community of Role Models
Invite parents to share their career journeys during a school-wide Career Day. For those who cannot attend in person, encourage them to submit short videos or written descriptions about their jobs.
Why It Matters:
Students learn about careers they might not have encountered otherwise.
Parents feel valued as active contributors to their child’s education.
Teachers gain insight into family connections that could lead to mentorship opportunities.
Career-Themed Family Projects
Bringing Career Readiness into the Home
Example Project: Family Budget Challenge
Activity: Students create a mock family budget for one month, factoring in expenses like housing, groceries, and transportation.
Skills Developed: Financial literacy, teamwork, and problem-solving.
Career Connections: Introduces fields like financial planning and accounting.
Example Project: Community Impact Proposal
Activity: Students and parents brainstorm a project addressing a local community need.
Skills Developed: Research, creativity, and project management.
Career Connections: Highlights roles in urban planning and nonprofit management.
A Win-Win for Students, Parents, and Educators
When parents feel empowered to guide their children’s career exploration, students thrive in a network of support. By bringing parents into the fold, educators create a stronger foundation for students to achieve academic and career success.
Bridging Language Gaps for Multilingual Families
Dallas ISD is a vibrant, multilingual community, and it is essential to ensure families from all linguistic backgrounds can support their children’s career exploration. Here are some free and easy ways to make your resources and communication accessible:
Leverage Technology: Tools like Google Translate allow parents to translate materials or participate in real-time conversations.
Tap Into Bilingual Parent Volunteers: Encourage bilingual parents to volunteer as translators for school events or workshops. Seeing parents in these roles can inspire students to explore careers in interpretation, teaching, or community service.
Visual Communication: Provide bilingual infographics or guides to simplify information for all families.
Dallas ISD Translations Department: Highlight this resource for professional interpreters and multilingual workshop materials.
By embracing these strategies, educators can foster an inclusive environment where every family - regardless of language - can actively support their child’s career development.
Together, we create pathways to success for all.
