Nurse Kendall's Update

It's January and after a busy holiday season we are all ready to stay healthy and ready to learn! Unfortunately, it's also flu season! It is important to be vigilant about keeping our kids healthy during this time! Remind your child about the importance of handwashing before eating anything, after using the bathroom, and after sneezing/coughing. Handwashing is the number one defense against infection. The CDC expects an increase in seasonal flu between January and March every year. Check with your family doctor regarding information about flu vaccines.

Remember, to keep all our kids as healthy as possible, children must be fever free for 24 hours off of fever-reducing medication prior to returning to school.

Signs and Symptoms of Flu

People who have the flu often feel some or all of these signs and symptoms that usually start suddenly, not gradually:

  • Fever* or feeling feverish/chills

  • Cough

  • Sore throat

  • Runny or stuffy nose

  • Muscle or body aches

  • Headaches

  • Fatigue (very tired)

  • Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in young children than in adults.

*It’s important to note that not everyone with the flu will have a fever. (www.cdc.gov/flu)

Art

In Mr. Hunt’s art class, we are beginning our sculpture unit. Students are learning about the main types of sculpture, creating an orthographic drawing and beginning to create a wearable sculpture out of paper mache.

In Mrs. Williams’ art class we are working with clay. Students are exploring how to use a variety of tools, practicing different techniques for working with clay and mapping out their designs for their final project.

Congrats to our Western Art winners! The pieces are currently in the library for students and staff to enjoy.
