WHIS Winter Activities WHIS Winter Activities

Last week, the Waialua High School Band came to our school to perform for our students for a Listen and Learn Concert. Our students were able to be introduced to the different instruments and learn more about the band and music. We had a great time listening to the band play for us!

Today, our students were able to participate in fun activities with the Waialua High's Leadership group and student volunteers. They made a snowman popcorn, ate shave ice, took pictures with Santa, and made an ornament. We are grateful for the students and staff who helped us put on these fun activities for our students.

One of our palm trees at the front of our school needs to be removed since we are no longer to maintain it and it causes a hazard at school. We have been on the quest to acquire a loulu palm to replace the existing tree.

We are grateful to one of our parents, Mrs. Lydi Bernal who was able to connect us with Mrs. Linda Maeda-Lee. Linda generously donated a loulu palm to our school last month. She has been growing it for about 5 years at the DOE nursery in Kaimuki. The seeds came from a native loulu tree on the campus of Wilson Elementary! We are so excited to plant our tree later this school year. MAHALO!

EOEL: Garden EOEL: Garden

Look how proud our little gardeners are! We finally harvested the last of our vegetables in our vegetable garden this week! The students have worked so hard and waited so patiently for our green onions to grow!

Kindergarten: Vegetable Garden Kindergarten: Vegetable Garden

by Ms. Brooks

Kindergarten was able to harvest their first vegetable from their garden! The class planted lettuce a few weeks back and it was finally ready this week. They picked their lettuce, washed it, and bagged it to take home to their families!

First grade read the Gingerbread Man and created our own version of the Gingerbread Man using art. Students made a collage with paper and felt.

Flu Season Help Flu Season Help

by Nurse Connie

It has been a milestone school year with lots of kids and school programs returning to full swing after two years of COVID restrictions and lock-downs. Our shared experience will hopefully help us continue to be proactive in keeping our school a healthy space to learn. A valuable take away from COVID is the significant impact personal health decisions and behaviors have in creating a healthy school environment. With the Flu, RSV, and COVID virus circulating in the population, we hope that lessons learned from COVID will motivate parents and families to act as role models to students in basic infection control practices. Getting vaccinated for vaccine preventable diseases is one way to slow disease spread and also protects people from having to go to the hospital. Making sure indoor spaces get proper air exchange (by mixing with outdoor air) is another way to prevent infection spread. The rest of the steps we mention here have been said many times before: staying home when sick, covering coughs and sneezes, and proper hand washing will go a long way in helping both kids and school workers stay healthy.

May you and yours truly feel the joy this season brings in making memories with loved ones.

Have a happy and fun-filled holiday break!
