Austin Packer Bulletin 0401
August 8, 2025
Dear Families/Caregivers and Community Members:
We’re excited to begin another school year in Austin Public Schools, and we’re starting with purpose.
Last year brought its share of challenges, but our focus on Connection helped keep us grounded. That theme, connecting with students, families/caregivers, staff, and one another, continues to guide us as we build a culture where everyone feels seen, supported, and valued.
This year, we’re going deeper, strengthening what works and staying focused on what matters most: helping every learner succeed.
Focused on What Works
Throughout the district, we’re making meaningful progress in several key areas:
- Expanding the BARR program from AHS and Ellis to IJ Holton, strengthening relationships and support systems for students
- Building on the success of our 9th Grade Seminar course, helping students transition to high school with confidence
- Continuing to grow the Packer Profile, which defines the key skills and values we want for all learners
- Implementing literacy strategies through the READ Act, with a strong focus on early reading success
- Maintaining our district-wide MTSS framework, ensuring all students get the academic and behavioral support they need
- Prioritizing student attendance, because being in school every day makes a real difference in long-term success
We’re also continuing to support our educators through Strengths-based development, helping every staff member lead from their natural talents and model the core values we teach our students.
Starting Strong
We’re kicking off the school year by welcoming national education speaker Dr. Todd Whitaker, who will address staff on what makes great schools and great educators stand out. His message reinforces the work happening in classrooms and schools across our district—and sets the tone for a strong year ahead. You are welcome to join us in Knowlton Auditorium on August 19 at 8:45 am.
Accelerate Austin – Looking Ahead: November 4 Bond Referendum
Many of our schools are outdated and no longer meet today’s safety or learning needs. After three years of study and community input, we’re ready to move forward.
On November 4, voters in our community will consider a two-question bond referendum focused on modernizing and maintaining our school facilities:
- Question One proposes a $54.7 million investment in eight school buildings, including safety and accessibility upgrades, major mechanical repairs, and classroom improvements.
- Question Two proposes a $12 million renovation and expansion of the Ellis Middle School pool. This second question can only pass if the first is approved.
These investments would ensure that our buildings are safe, functional, and aligned with the high-quality learning happening inside.
If both questions are approved, the estimated tax impact for a home valued at $200,000 would be approximately $16 per month beginning in 2026. For more information, please visit AccelerateAustin.org.
Thank You
Strong schools don’t happen by accident; they grow from strong communities. Thank you for continuing to support our students, our staff, and the future of public education in Austin.
We’re ready for a great year ahead.
Sincerely,
Dr. Joey Page, Superintendent

Staff Spotlight
At Austin Public Schools, our mission is to inspire, empower, and accelerate every one of our learners, and we know that the only way for us to reach this goal is through the efforts of all our incredibly hard-working staff.
In this week’s Staff Spotlight, we’re highlighting Oakland Education Center paraeducator Taylor King.
"Taylor is flexible and helpful while while working with a wide variety of students. She is able to keep her students calm while working through any number of issues, she advocates for her students, and she always approaches her work with a positive attitude. Taylor is a pleasure to work with at the Oakland Education Center."
Congratulations!
