The Capstone for the School Library concentration is the LIS 693 course, in which you will develop a comprehensive Portfolio. Your portfolio must:
  • Clearly align your work with both the AASL Standards &/or ISTE Standards
  • Clearly align your work with the Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs).

For each component you should:
  • Explain what you learned
  • Explain how your work aligns with the relevant standards and PLOs,
  • Explain how it demonstrates impact on student learning.
  • Your portfolio should also describe how you will apply this knowledge in your future library program by outlining the specific practices you will implement to show your continued learning and growth. This process ensures intentional connections among coursework, professional standards, and meaningful student outcomes.

4) What does the School Library Capstone Portfolio look like?

As part of the UNCG Library and Information Science graduate program, the capstone portfolio is a web-based culminating assessment that demonstrates your mastery of the program’s learning outcomes and readiness for professional practice. Your portfolio is reviewed by the K–12 Licensure Committee and the University committee and must align with AASL School Library Evaluation(076) Standards, ISTE Standards for Coaches (Dual), and the LIS Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs).

The portfolio should present clear evidence of your knowledge across core competencies, your ability to apply theory to practice, and your growth as an information professional. It must also demonstrate how your work supports student learning and engagement.

Ultimately, your portfolio should showcase not only what you have learned, but how you will apply this learning to guide professional decision-making and lead an effective future library program.

1. Organize early:
Create a dedicated folder on your computer or cloud storage (e.g., One Drive) to store all assignments from each course, sorted by course name and semester.
2. Reflect: Develop a Portfolio Preparation Statement: (Included in ALL Assignments)

To support preparation for the Capstone course and the development of your final professional portfolio, please include an introductory paragraph on the title page of all of your assignments that addresses the following:

💠The Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs) and AASL/ISTE Standards addressed by the assignment
💠 A brief summary of the assignment, including key concepts, skills, or understandings you have gained
💠 A brief specific reflection explaining how the knowledge and skills developed through this assignment impact student learning, including why this learning is important for effective library instruction and HOW you plan to use this knowledge in your future program.
3. Visit your planning guide every semester:
At the end of each semester, scroll to the bottom of your Working Plan of Study shared in advising and fill in the assignments you've completed—this will help align your work with the portfolio sections while it is fresh on your mind.

4. Map assignments to standards as you go:

Match each major assignment to AASL, ISTE, and PLO standards when you complete it. Keep a running list for easy reference during portfolio building.

5. Draft your homepage and intro sections early:

Start drafting your About Me, Resume, and Philosophy of Education statements before your final semester to reduce last-minute work.

6. Artifact collection suggestions:

  • Screenshot discussion boards, instructor comments, anything that doesn't download
  • Be sure to save documents where instructors have added comments
  • You MUST have a video for PLO 4.3 - make sure you record or get a copy of any in class presentation recordings
