OCTOBER Guidance Lessons

The "-ber" months have my heart! The weather gets cooler, pumpkin patches start popping up, and the holidays are on their way! 🍁

There are so many wonderful and important things planned for guidance lessons this month. October is BULLYING PREVENTION month and in each class we will have a lesson on bullying prevention. We want Young to be a safe and nurturing place for kids to learn and thrive so these conversations about kindness and bullying prevention are crucial! The last full week of October is RED RIBBON WEEK. The Red Ribbon Campaign serves as a catalyst to educate youth and our communities to choose and encourage a drug free life! These are very important topics that I encourage you to also make a centerpiece of conversations at home.

RED RIBBON WEEK!

We will observe Red Ribbon Week from October 23rd - 27th. We will have some fun dress up days and activities to help us celebrate! Our focus for the week will be making healthy and safe choices. Please see the graphic below for information about our fun dress up days!

Coping skill

Each newsletter I will share a skill which can be used to help when having a strong feeling. It is good for kids to know and practice ahead of time some skills they can use to help them calm down when they are having "big" feelings. And BIG feelings can happen anywhere! I love the idea of having strategies that can be used or adapted in any situation.

Sometimes when we are experiencing those "big feelings" we have negative thoughts associated with them. And that negative thought process or cycle is hard to break out of. So here are some options of ways to disrupt that negative thought cycle and get back to more logical/rational thoughts.

You can personalize these categories to your child. So maybe that sounds like them listing different dinosaur species or Pokemon or even saying their multiplication facts. Anything you know they are interested in and would capture their attention. As they list the things in that category you should see their breath slow and their mood to shift as they begin to calm down.

I would love to hear about times when any of these coping strategies are used by you or your student!
