Principal Update 5/13/24

Good Morning Memorial Families,

I hope that everyone enjoyed the weekend! They seem to be so jam-packed these days! There is a lot happening this week and moving forwards, so I am going to break this week's news up into heading so you can easily access information.

Parent Survey

The School Council (a board of parents, teachers, and administrators) is seeking your feedback on this year. We do consider your feedback carefully and a lot of recommendations that we receive are put into place. Over the past few years we have tried to beef up consistent communication and expectations from classroom to classroom in each grade and our school improvement plan goals are derived from the feedback we receive. Please consider sharing your feedback with us here.

MCAS

This week we are completing our 3rd and 4th grade MCAS testing. We will test on Monday and Wednesday with make ups happening later this week. Thank you to our families for ensuring that your children are here on time and well-rested on testing days.

Book Fair Information and Volunteers Needed!

Please note that due to changes in Scholastic's policies, TAXES WILL BE CHARGED FOR ALL BOOKS PURCHASED

Every fall and spring the Memorial PTO holds a Scholastic Book Fair to support our library and Literacy Fund. The fall fair will be held from Monday, May 20th to Friday, May 24th, with a make up day on Tuesday, May 28th. We rely on parent volunteers to help our children select appropriate books within their reading level and budget. Every person entering the school must have an updated CORI report. Siblings may not attend.

Sign Up to volunteer here!

Specialist Night

Our specialists are hard at work preparing for our specialist night to be held on May 30th from 5:00-7:00pm. This is a great night of celebration for our students. They will hget to show off all they have learned in art, music, physical education, technology, and library class this year. We are making some adjustments to the schedule to try to reduce the crowd in the hallways all at once. A clearer plan will be shared in next week's newsletter. It is also a great night to check out our spring book fair to stock up on your summer reading!

Early Release Day Friday

Our teachers will have their final Professional Development Day on Friday afternoon. Dismissal will begin at 12:15pm. We have more teachers being trained to teach Project Lead the Way, and hope to implement modules in all classrooms next year. If you are interested in seeing what PLTW is all about, check out the first few minutes of the school committee meeting tonight on the MURSD YouTube channel. First and second graders from Ms. True and Mrs. Bourassa's classes will share their projects from a recent PLTW module that they completed in their classrooms.

Recycled Materials Needed

Our second graders are completing their final unit in math this month, and it is a project where they have to design and build marble runs. We are looking for donations of toilet paper and paper towel rolls. Please send them in instead of tossing them in the trash! We also have an upcoming Inspired Learning Day in June and are in need of recyclable materials for a few of our sessions. Please feel free to send in clean recycled materials with your child for use on that day.

Have a wonderful week!

Warmly,

Wendy

School Hours

Our school hours are 8:45am-3:15pm. Drop off begins at 8:45 and students who arrive after 9:00am are considered tardy. We will begin dismissal right around 3:15pm.

Due to the hectic nature of the late afternoon, we will no longer be allowing parent dismissals from the main office after 2:45pm. If your child has an appointment, please plan to dismiss him/her earlier, or make use of our pick up line at 3:15pm. Thank you for understanding.
