Student Council Shoe Drive and Walk to School Day!
How many shoes do you have at home? Are any of them too old, too small, out of style, or just not wearable? DO NOT THROW THEM AWAY! We want your shoes!
We are partnering with a local organization, Changing Footprints, to collect 1,000 pairs of shoes. The shoes will go to people in Indiana and around the world who need them most. You can help! We will take anything that can be worn on your feet. We take shoes in ANY CONDITION! Shoes that can’t be worn again are sent to Nike Grind and turned into playground surfaces. Nothing ends up in a landfill.
The Shoe Drive begins Monday, September 22 and ends Friday, October 3. Plus, you can bring shoes on Walk to School Day which is Wednesday, October 1.

Notes from the Nurses
1ST and 3RD GRADE VISION SCREENING
Vision Screening is required by the Indiana State Board of Health for all 1st and 3rd grade students. All 1ST grade students will be screened here at Cumberland Road on Tuesday, September 30th and all 3rd graders will be screened on Thursday, October 9th. Near and far vision will be both be evaluated, and the results are pass/fail. You will only be notified if your student fails the screening test.
If your child wears glasses or contacts, please make sure they have them at school on those days for accurate testing results.
If you have any questions, or if you do not want your child’s vision to be screened, please contact our school nurses, Ashley Ritsema at aritsema@hse.k12.in.us, or Emily Budreau at ebudreau@hse.k12.in.us.

Around the District
Did you know....
that missing just two days of school each month can add up quickly—and may affect your child’s progress toward reading at grade level or even graduating on time?
In Indiana, students who miss 18 or more days in a year are considered chronically absent. The Department of Education asks schools, including HSE, to keep families updated on cumulative absences. The good news: Last year, HSE reduced chronic absenteeism by more than 1%—and together, we can keep that progress growing!
📌 Attendance Goal: Aim for no more than 10 absences in a school year.
💡 Tip: Remember to call in absences and bring medical documentation after healthcare visits.
