Hillary's Highlights
Hello Grizzly students and families,
I can’t believe it but it’s time to begin planning for next year at Ashland High School! Starting next week, our counselors will be visiting classes and meeting with students to talk about course options and help them think about the opportunities ahead.
Students received their forecasting forms over the past couple of weeks. We encourage you to take a few minutes to review the form together and talk about classes that will support your student’s interests, goals, and a healthy balance between academics and extracurricular activities. Forecasting is a great chance for students to think intentionally about what they want their school year to look like.
The forecasting form helps families visualize a potential schedule based on the courses offered at Ashland High School. Please be sure to read the directions carefully so the form is completed fully and accurately.
We also encourage families to explore the course guide, which outlines different pathways within each department and highlights the many elective opportunities available to students.
You can find the course guide and more information about the forecasting process here:
https://www.ashland.k12.or.us/o/ahs/page/forecasting
We look forward to helping students build a schedule that challenges them, supports their goals, and makes the most of their high school experience.
Cell Phone Policy Reminders
Hello Families,
We wanted to send a brief reminder about our school’s cell phone expectations. We’ve seen more phones coming out during the school day, especially during passing periods, lunch, and other unstructured times, and we want to ensure we stay consistent with district policy.
As a reminder, Ashland School District’s updated electronic device policy requires that student cell phones and personal electronic devices remain off and put away from the moment students enter campus until they leave campus. This includes passing periods, breaks, and lunch. Devices may only be used if a staff member gives explicit permission or if an approved exception in the board policy applies. https://policy.osba.org/ashland/J/JFCEB%20D1.PDF
The goal of this policy is simple: more focus, more connection, and fewer distractions. While phones are part of daily life, we also know students learn and engage more fully when they are present with their peers and teachers.
If your student needs a locker to help keep their device stored during the school day, they can come to the main office to pick up a locker agreement form.
Thank you for your support in helping keep our learning environment focused and consistent for all students.

César E. Chávez Leadership Conference
AHS was excited to take a group of 14 students to the César E. Chávez Leadership Conference at Southern Oregon University on March 6. This annual gathering brings together Latinx high school students and community leaders from throughout the region to enhance students’ readiness to take on leadership roles and deepen their understanding of current issues in the Latinx community. Attendees participate in workshops that cover cultural arts, college readiness and leadership skills. Furthermore, the conference actively motivates Latino youth to pursue educational opportunities beyond high school.
OSU Presidential Scholarship Awards
On March 4, two AHS seniors Owen Beck and Marcel Starbird were presented with Oregon State University’s most prestigious and competitive award, the OSU Presidential Scholarship. In 2026, only 4.7% of eligible students (145/3,060) were awarded this distinction. The Presidential Scholarship is worth $10,000 a year and is in addition to the $5,000 per year OSU merit scholarships these students have already received – so $60,000 total!!
Please join us in congratulating Marcel and Owen!!!
Culinary Students Accomplishment
Over the weekend, seniors Tyler Rogers and Kenny Arreaga competed in the 16th Annual Oregon Coast Invitational Culinary Competition at the Oregon Coast Culinary Institute. Both students performed amazingly, and we couldn't be more proud of their creativity, hard work, and graciousness at the competition. Kenny Arreaga won first place and a $3000 scholarship to OCCI.
Additionally, culinary 5 students in our baking and pastry course, as well as several culinary 1 & 2 students baked amazing desserts for our PTO fundraiser. I am told these amazing students raised quite a bit of money.

Cell Phone Policy
Starting January 1, 2026, Ashland School District’s updated electronic device policy goes into effect. The goal is simple — more focus, more connection, and less distraction.
During class time, phones, earbuds, and smartwatches need to be off and put away. Students can use them before school and after school, students cannot use their devices during school hours, including lunch, breaks, passing periods- they must be turned off and put away from bell to bell.
We know phones are part of life, but we also know our students learn and connect best when they’re fully present. This update helps keep classrooms focused and encourages face-to-face interaction the good kind.
Thanks for your support as we continue to make AHS a place where students can thrive, stay engaged, and enjoy being part of this community. If your student needs a locker to help accommodate this change, please have them come to the main office to receive a locker agreement form.

SBAC Testing
A Reminder About SBAC Testing
SBAC testing is around the corner, and we here at AHS want to acknowledge why state testing is an important tool for not only educators, but for students as well.
Testing is a crucial aspect of learning because it enables students to showcase their knowledge and abilities. Regularly taking these kinds of tests can boost students' confidence and enhance their test-taking skills, which is a valuable asset for their continued education and success.
State assessments like the SBAC also offer valuable insights into student learning, aiding teachers and parents in enhancing instruction and supporting student achievement. Results play a vital role in pinpointing areas where students excel and areas where they need improvement. By addressing these learning needs promptly, teachers and parents can concentrate their efforts on providing targeted instruction to foster success.
This is also how we show the community and the world just what our students are able to do and how well we have done as a school to prepare them. We take pride in what we do and we want students to show pride in what they have learned by doing their best.
Students should strive to do their personal best on the SBAC. Education is a journey of growth and development, and it's through this process that students can set personal goals and take ownership of their learning and strive for continuous improvement.

AHS College & Career Pathways Information Sessions
Thursday, April 9: College Pathways 101
5:30-6:30pm in the AHS Library
Overwhelmed by the idea of thinking about college? Finding an educational pathway that’s a good fit takes some planning. Topics covered include the importance of spending time learning about different kinds of educational opportunities, the process of applying to both professional career schools, community colleges and four-year colleges/universities, ACT/SAT testing, and an introduction to financial aid and scholarships.
Thursday, April 30: Financial Aid 101
5:30-6:30pm in the AHS Library
Learn about the pathways to access financial aid and scholarships! We will discuss the process for completing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), which qualifies students to receive the Federal Pell Grant, Oregon Opportunity Grant (OOG), Oregon Promise Grant (OPG), and government loans. We will also cover the ORSAA (Oregon Student Aid Application) for students eligible for the OOG and OPG, who cannot complete the FAFSA, and the CSS Profile—an additional financial aid application required by some private colleges
AHS College Handbook: Check out the new 2026-27 AHS College Handbook, which includes information on how to find an educational pathway that’s a good fit, opportunities available at community colleges and four-year public/private universities, WUE schools, financial aid/scholarships, and many other useful resources. Hard copies of the updated handbook will be available soon in the College & Career Center.
ACT/SAT Info and Updates: Students applying to four-year colleges that require test scores usually take the ACT and/or SAT in spring of junior year and/or fall of senior year. The Oregon Public Universities no longer require test scores for admissions. Many colleges and universities are test optional. Check individual schools for current guidelines.
Students register for the ACT and SAT online. Upcoming testing dates: ACT (April 11, June 13, July 11), SAT (May 2, June 6, August 23).
Students who qualify for a fee waiver for the ACT/SAT, should reach out to karyn.barats@ashland.k12.or.us in the AHS Counseling Office for a voucher before registering for either test.
Many of our students do NOT have to pay to take the ACT/SAT, AP tests, and can also receive tuition waivers and scholarships for SOU dual credit courses. To qualify for these benefits this school year, students/families must complete and turn in the Oregon Family Income Survey to the AHS Main Office to demonstrate their eligibility. You can find a link to a fillable PDF of this form at the end of the GOG. Hard copies are also available in the AHS Main Office.
ASPIRE @ AHS
ASPIRE at AHS: ASPIRE’s trained volunteer mentors work individually with students to explore education and career pathways. Mentors assist their students in researching colleges and training programs, preparing admissions and scholarship applications, understanding the financial aid process, and many other aspects of the road to post-secondary education and careers. Students who want to learn more about ASPIRE or sign up for a mentor can contact jennifer.marsden@ashland.k12.or.us

What is the Meaning of the Pride Flag?
The Pride Flag, a symbol of this celebration, represents different aspects of the LGBTQ2SIA+ community. The colors of the flag hold significant meaning: red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sunlight, green for nature, blue for harmony, and purple for spirit. We embrace the Pride Flag as a reminder of the beauty of diversity and the ongoing struggle for equality.
At Ashland High School
We believe in fostering a community where every individual is respected, valued, and celebrated for who they are. As we enter Pride Month, we work in solidarity with LGBTQ2SIA+ families and people of all marginalized identities, acknowledging the importance of their contributions and the unique challenges they may face.
