MS 50 Weekly News: 9/15/25

This Thursday is Virtual Curriculum Night! The night is split into three sections from 5:30-8:00PM, all of which will take place on Zoom.

1. First, you can join an all-school meeting at 5:30PM to hear from Principal Honoroff and our leadership team.
2. Second, you will have a meeting with your student’s grade team to discuss expectations and curriculum for the year.
3. Third, you will have a chance to meet one on one with any of your student’s teachers. Additionally, at 6:30PM there will be a high school application workshop in the 8th Grade Team Zoom.

All fathers, father-figures, and parents or guardians are welcome to join our high five line in celebration of the national Dads Take Your Child to School Day this Friday! Meet at school at 7:45AM on Friday, September 19th to greet and celebrate our students as they come to school. Coffee and pastries will be provided. We hope to see you there!

Tryouts and Auditions continue this week! We have a full schedule of fall activities about to begin and we can't wait to see your students share their skills. The dates and locations are listed below. All tryouts are at MS 50 from 2:40-4:00PM.

• Cheer: Tuesday, September 16 and Thursday, September 18 - Gym
• Mathletes: Wednesday, September 17 - Room 311
• Basketball: Gym
• Boys: Wednesday, September 17
• Girls: Thursday, September 25
• Boys and Girls: Friday, September 26 (Invite Only)
• Theatre: Friday, September 19 (Callbacks) - Auditorium

This year, we are excited to add dance as an option for students in place of their traditional Physical Education period. Students who have opted in to dance work with our dance teacher Ms. Janelle during their scheduled P.E. periods each week. This is a great additional way for students to get active during the school day! If you'd like to learn more or opt your child in, please email Ms. Gunn.

The year just began but high school applications are just around the corner for our current 8th grade families. We will have a lot more information about the application process to share once the application opens on October 7th. In the meantime, click the button below to access all of the high school flyers and tour dates that are shared with us. We will update this folder whenever we receive additional flyers. We also have a Google Sheet available with updating lists of school tours broken down by borough.

Our Specialized High School Admissions Test (SHSAT) prep classes for current 8th graders begin tomorrow, September 16. We are proud to continue our partnership with students from Brooklyn Latin who come to provide one-to-one tutoring for our students in SHSAT skills. These students provide expert, individualized tutoring and advice for interested 8th graders from 2:40-5:00PM after school on Tuesdays until the exam. If you'd like to participate and haven't registered, please fill out the permission slip on Operoo. Current 7th graders will have a chance to receive tutoring this spring.

The PTA is excited to get started at this week's Virtual Curriculum Night! Last week, a form was shared on Operoo allowing the PTA to contact you directly about organizing opportunities and more. Make sure to complete that form to stay up-to-date with everything the PTA is planning. If you need help connecting to Operoo, complete the form at ms50.org/operoo.
