Art
Students learned how to use the six art stations: visual art (drawing and coloring), dancing, culinary art (kitchen), architecture (blocks), puppet theater, and reading art books and relaxing. After trying each station once, students got to show off their knowledge of art vocabulary and art production skills by creating a step-by-step artwork. We will do these same steps in May and make the two artworks into a small book to show how much each student has grown over the school year.
In October, students will learn about warm, cool, and neutral color families by creating a greeting card. Later in the month they will create spin paintings out of the primary colors and make a 3D rainbow by mixing the primary colors of model magic into the secondary colors.
Music
In September, students learned several songs and rhymes about trains and apples. We have been working very hard on establishing classroom routines: entering the room, making a circle, how to sit for book time, etc. We have also been hard at work learning how to spread out around the music room in order to move in self-space. A student favorite to practice self-space and body awareness has been Glue Dancing. Students have been practicing steady beat through imitation using body percussion and simple classroom instruments.
October will give way to more fall-themed songs, continued practice and conscious application of steady beat, identifying 4 ways we use our voice (speak, sing, whisper, shout), and exploring shared space vs. self space with locomotor and nonlocomotor movement.
Science
In September, we learned how scientists use tools, such as a magnifying glass, magnet, and pipette, and have enjoyed exploring with the tools. We learned about the traits of a scientist, and how much kindergarteners use science skills by asking questions, making observations, experimenting, and sharing what they’ve learned. In October, we will be exploring force and motion. Students will learn about the difference between pushes (moving an object away from you) and pulls (moving an object towards you). Students should enjoy exploring pushes and pulls through experiments, activities, songs, and stories.
Phy Ed
In Physical Education, students started the year practicing movement skills, spatial awareness, and listening through tag games and group directions. Next, we are moving into skill stations, where students will rotate through small-group activities to practice teamwork and build specific movement skills.
