Happy September!

This school year is flying by and we have been busy in ELA. We have almost finished our first workbook, in which students have enjoyed learning true stories about survival and resilience.

As September starts winding down, we will continue working to prepare our students for success on their upcoming Check-In (October 14-15).

Over the next few weeks we are going to continue reinforcing skills such as:

  • Central Ideas and Supporting Details

  • Theme

  • Text Evidence

As always, feel free to reach out to us if you have any questions! Have a wonderful week!

Math Math

Ms. Odom and Ms. O'Neil

As we begin the second nine weeks we are excited to have a fresh start and cover some new math topics. We are currently working on ratios and proportions and students who master these skills will find solving word problems a lot easier as we progress throughout the year. These skills are also considered a boulder in our North Carolina curriculum which means students can expect to see many of these types of questions on their EOG at the end of the year. Students can access extra practice with ratios on iXL. Since students know how to access this program and it gives instant feedback, it’s a great way for them to get some extra review and practice with the topics we are covering in class. Our test for this unit is currently scheduled for Friday, October 30, 2026.

If your child needs additional support, or you are concerned about classroom performance, please contact your child’s math teacher so we can help get them back on track.

Science Science

Mrs. Grube

We have started the waves unit, which is our last physical science unit of sixth grade. We have learned about the types of waves and their properties. We will now be learning about light waves and how this applies to sight, sound waves and how this applies to hearing, and how various types of waves move through different materials. We have the cow eye dissection coming up, which is usually students' first experience with dissections. This unit should last approximately 6 weeks.

Mrs. Guida

Over the last few weeks in Science, our 6th graders finished our Matter Unit through hands-on activities, demonstrations, and class discussions. Students explored matter, states of matter, and thermal energy, investigating how particles behave in solids, liquids, and gases and how adding or removing thermal energy affects particle movement.

Students also observed several lab demonstrations, including investigating expansion and contraction. They practiced making observations, asking questions, using evidence, and explaining their thinking through I See–Think–Wonder activities and science discussions. We also reviewed the difference between thermal conductors and insulators and connected these concepts to everyday materials.

Now, we have started our Energy Unit. Students are learning about different forms of energy and how energy can be transferred and transformed. We will continue using hands-on activities, demonstrations, and real-world examples to help students connect these concepts to everyday life.

It has been exciting to see students becoming more comfortable thinking and communicating like scientists while working together during our demonstrations and labs!

Important Dates

  • September 23: Energy Quiz 2

  • September 30: Energy Unit Test

Please encourage your child to review their notes, class activities, and practice materials as we prepare for these assessments.

Good Afternoon Parents and Students-

I hope that this finds you and your families well and that you had a safe and relaxing break.

I wanted to reach out to you to update you on what’s going on this quarter as well as invite you to a special upcoming events that the City of Monroe and Special Olympics Union County are co-sponsoring the next weekend.

First things first-we have started our first official unit in Health entitled “Interpersonal Communication and Healthy Relationships.” The activities and assignments for this unit are geared towards becoming a more effective communicator, both orally and in writing (emails, written work) as well as through our body language. In addition to Canvas assignments that I give to the students there will also be assignments where students will get to choose what format they want to showcase what they have learned during the unit. This will give them the opportunity to be creative in a variety of ways. Please note that this unit DOES NOT include reproductive health topics.

We are also starting our Pickleball Unit. I have linked the Introduction to Pickleball video to my Canvas home page; some students started watching it today in class (I will be showing during class as well on Friday and Monday). We are doing modified games this week and the beginning of next week. My plan is to have them pick a teammate by the middle of the week and then begin a round robin tournament within the class. This way, everyone gets to play everyone else in the class and be responsible for learning how to referee and keep score.

Now comes the fun part- the City of Monroe and Special Olympics Union County are co-sponsoring an event on Saturday, October 24th from 11am-3pm at Dickerson Park. This event entitled, “Pickleball for All” is a community event for all ages, skill level or ability that wants to come out and participate. Even if you have no interest in playing pickleball, there will be multiple food trucks and vendors, candy, temporary tattoos and bounce houses. We will also have two bocce courts set up for anyone that would like to learn how to play bocce.

The event is free (with the exception of the food vendors) and you can come and stay the entire time or come and go as you please. Either way, we’d LOVE to see you.

I will be around the event the entire day- any student that comes to the event and shows me something from the event (a picture, brochure, empty snow cone cup, or other artifact) will receive extra credit. If you aren’t able to make the event, don’t worry- there will be an alternate extra credit assignment given during this unit as well so no one misses out on the opportunity!

As always, thank you for all you do to assist your student!

Mrs. Nolin

👩🏻‍🏫 I am the Exceptional Children's (EC) Teacher for the entire 6th Grade. Students know me as a 6th Grade Teacher who just "helps out." I have certain students that I see in and/or out of the general education classroom but I am another adult in the room that can assist ALL children. So if your child comes home and tells you that I helped them, just know that I support the students who ask for my help and it does not necessarily mean they need individualized services.

💌 If you have any questions, you can email me at snolin@unionacademy.org.
