Maverick Community News: October 6th - October 11th
A Letter from Principal Baldwin
Good Morning Mav Nation,
As we enter the last week of the 1st 9 weeks, I want to say thank you to our students, staff, parents and community for a great homecoming week. I also want to remind families of a few important dates and need to knows as we close out the first grading period.
Report Card Grades and UIL
Friday, October 10th is the end of the 1st 9 weeks. It is important to check your students grades and ensure they are passing by Friday. Students who pass all their classes on the report card, will be eligible for the entire 2nd 9 weeks. Skyward has an APP that can be downloaded on your device. This will make keeping up with your student's grades and attendance easier.
PSAT for 9th-11th Grade
The campus will administering the PSAT on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
Testing will occur from 1st to 4th periods only with the students testing on the following schedule:
Tues, Oct. 7th- 10th Graders
Wed, Oct. 8th- 9th Graders
Thurs, Oct. 10th- 11th Graders
It is important for your students to arrive to campus on time as the PSAT is a timed test. Please refrain from checking out students during the test as this will cause your student's test to be voided.
Dresscode
As we close out homecoming 2025, students need to return to following the Alvin ISD dress code. We hope the students enjoyed the theme days but it is time to return to our normal schedule and expectations including dress code. As I say all the time, if we can do the little things right (grades, attendance and dress code), we won't have to worry about the big things. The full dress code can be found by clicking here
Cell Phones
HB 1481 bans all cell phones and electronics during the school day. This is a state law and we do not have the authority to choose whether or not to comply with the law. Students are well aware of the law and the consequences but we need parental support. If parents are having to pick up a cell phone from the campus, this is your students 2nd violation. All students can pickup their phone after school on their 1st infraction. We kindly ask that parents not yell at our front office staff if you are having to pick up a phone. We also need parents to wait until dismissal to retrieve cell phones. We have had several instances of cell phones being taken and parents demanding to pick them up 30 minutes later. The bookkeeper has other roles and responsibilities that must be completed and she cannot continue to stop multiple times a day to address cell phone issues.
See Something, Say Something
The events that occured at Shadow Creek this week are an important reminder that if you see something, say something. A Crimestoppers tip allowed law enforcement and school administrators to quickly act and ensure the safety of all students and staff. As I stated in my back to school parent letter, our number one goal at MHS is to ensure the safety of all our students and staff members. All decisions are made with safety in mind.
I have high expectations for my students, my staff and myself as I know MHS is a great campus with amazing students and caring staff. We are successful because we have a common goal to provide an academically rich environment to prepare our students for post secondary opportunities.
Thank you for your continued partnership and support as we close out week 9. I hope everyone has a great fall break!

Jamie Baldwin

Invitation to Rice VSA’s Annual College Leadership Workshop
My name is Leonard Nguyen and I am a current freshman at Rice University. I’m emailing you as a committee member of the Rice Vietnamese Student Association (VSA) to formally invite your students to attend our College Leadership Workshop (CLW) on Saturday, October 18th.
CLW’s goal is to help high school students and parents navigate the college admissions process through workshops about college admissions (including financial aid, essays, extracurriculars, etc.), a campus tour, small groups led by current college students, essay feedback, and workshops for parents. Participants can also enter to win a $200 scholarship by writing a short paragraph. At our last in-person workshop in 2024, we had over 350 students and parents attend!
Registration is open at https://form.jotform.com/252446327810051. This year, we have a special pre-sale price of $9.00, which will last until October 3rd. After that, prices will rise to $12. This fee includes breakfast, lunch, all workshops/resources, and a t-shirt. We understand that not everyone is able to pay this registration fee, and we ask any concerned students or parents to contact us at vsa.clw@gmail.com, so that we can do our best to ensure that anyone can attend our workshop.
Additional information can be found on the CLW webpage at https://vsa.rice.edu/college-leadership-workshop/, but don’t hesitate to contact me directly with any additional questions at ln37@rice.edu.
We hope to see your students and their parents at our event this October. The deadline to apply is October 10th. Thank you so much for your time!
The Yellow Out Campaign Needs Student & Adult Volunteers
Support 2020 MHS Grad Reaghan Velasquez
SINCE 2012, THE YELLOW OUT CAMPAIGN HAS DRIVEN ITS MISSION OF RAISING AWARENESS FOR THE MOST COMMON NEUROLOGICAL AND PERMANENTLY DISABLING CONDITION, SPINA BIFIDA. THE STORY OF OUR ORGANIZATION BEGINS WITH AN ELEMANTARY SCHOOL PLAYGROUND AND COMMUNITY SUPPORT.
REAGHAN VELASQUEZ WAS BORN WITH SPINA BIFIDA BUT SHE ALWAYS UNDERSTOOD HOW SIGNIFICANT IT WAS TO GROW UP KNOWING THAT HER CONDITION WOULD NOT DEFINE HER, AND THAT SHE COULD SIMPLY ACCOMPLISH WHATEVER HER HEART DESIRES.
Letter from The Yellow Out Campaign
Dear Mrs. Baldwin,
On behalf of The Yellow Out Campaign, I am reaching out to invite your students to take part in a meaningful opportunity to give back to the community. We are hosting our annual Cook Off & Car Show
On October 11, 2025 at Pearland Knights of Columbus, and we are seeking enthusiastic volunteers to help make the event a success.
This event supports in raising awareness for Spina Bífida while striving to promote inclusion for people of all abilities. Volunteers will play an important role in assisting with event setup, welcoming guests, distributing materials, guiding participants, and helping with clean-up.
We believe this is an excellent opportunity for students to:
Engage in community service and develop leadership skills
Work together as a team in a fun and meaningful environment
Earn volunteer hours (if applicable)
We would be honored to partner with you to encourage students to participate. If possible, please share this opportunity with your student body, volunteer clubs, or service-learning programs and even your staff, we also need plenty of adults.
For more information or to sign up, students may contact us at 281-226-3763 or register directly at
https://www.theyellowoutcampaign.org/events
Thank you for your support in inspiring the next generation of community leaders. Together, we can make a lasting difference.
Warm regards,
Veronica Fonseca

Beginning with the 2025–26 school year, parents must complete two forms in the Skyward Parent Portal:
- Health Notice and Consent Form
- Counseling Notice and Consent Form
Forms will be available beginning August 30, 2025, and must be submitted by September 12, 2025.
Please note: While parental consent is required for health and mental health services, certain legally required activities—such as behavioral threat assessments—require parental notification but do not allow an opt-out option under the law.
Senate Bill 12: Parental Consent for Club Participation
During the 89th Legislative Session, Senate Bill 12 was passed, requiring school districts to inform parents and guardians of their rights and to seek parental consent for students to participate in clubs.
Per SB 12: A school district or open-enrollment charter school must require the written consent of the parent of or person standing in parental relation to a student enrolled in the district or school before the student may participate in a student club.
Below is the Consent Form that must be completed for students to participate in clubs on campus.

Unlike underclassmen pictures, every senior has the opportunity to take a selection of senior photos. CADY offers a variety of sessions but all seniors must sign-up for a session to ensure your picture is included in the Yearbook and in the slideshow that is shown before graduation.
If you do not want to complete a full photoshoot with CADY, at the bottom of "Choose Sessions", there is a yearbook only session for $10. The $10 sitting fee is a fundraiser for the senior class and is used to help lower the cost for the senior trip, prom, etc.
Don't want to go to the CADY Studio, No worries! There will be 4 Senior Roadshows were the studio will come to MHS. You still must BOOK the session online. This is a great option if you only want the Standard ($59), Simple ($29) or Yearbook Only ($10) session.

2025 Varsity Football Schedule
2025 Volleyball Schedule
As we look ahead to a successful 2025-26 school year, we want to make you aware of a new state law, House Bill 1481, which was passed by the Texas Legislature. House Bill 1481 prohibits students from using personal communication devices during the school day.
This law applies to:
- Cell phones
- Smartwatches
- Earbuds and headphones
- Tablets or any device that can text, call, record, or access the internet
In Alvin ISD, the expectation is simple: Not Seen. Not Heard. Not Taken.
Students may bring phones and personal electronic devices to school.
However, from the moment students enter the building in the morning until the final dismissal bell cell phones must be powered off or silenced, stored in a backpack or locker, and not used during class, passing periods, lunch, or restroom breaks.
Use in the Hallways
The use of personal communication devices in prohibited at all times.
Use at Lunch
Lunch is considered part of the school day so the use of electronic devices is prohibited under Texas Law.
Emergency Situations
Administrators may approve the use of cell phones in emergency situations where the device is necessary for the health or safety of students or others.
The Texas law requires school districts to administer disciplinary consequences if students violate the personal communication device policy in schools. Each infraction of this policy will result in the following escalating consequences:
- First offense – Device taken, returned to student
- Second – Parent must pick up
- Third – $15 fine + parent pickup
Refusal to hand over a device = disciplinary action per the Student Code of Conduct
Why this matters:
This law supports focused classrooms, respectful spaces, and safe learning for all.
Parents:
Please talk with your child about expectations before school starts. For emergencies, contact the campus office.
On January 14, 2025, the Alvin ISD Board of Trustees approved the 2025-2026 Academic Calendar.
Important Dates for Students:
Transition students (Pre-K, Kindergarten, 6th grade, and 9th grade) will return to school on Monday, August 11, with all other students starting on Tuesday, August 12.
Key Features of the Calendar:
A Fall Break October 13 - 17, aligning with the Brazoria County Fair
Spring Break occurring the 2nd week in March (March 9-13)
