Student Representatives Report
Audrey: Good evening, everyone! As we begin the 2026-2027 school year, I am thrilled to step into my second year as a board representative, now serving as a senior representative alongside my new partner, Abby. I am feeling energized after the summer and ready for the work ahead. There is something special about the start of a new school year, and we are excited to share just that with you all.
Abby: The annual Freshman Tailgate was held on the BASH softball field prior to the August 28th Friday Night Lights football game. BASH’s Link Crew organized many outdoor games such as cornhole, football, soccer, and frisbee for the freshmen to participate in. There was strong involvement from freshmen, as many were excited to partake in the activities and meet older classmates.
Both freshmen and Link Crew members felt that this was a great way to allow connections to be made and school spirit to be spread before the upcoming game. One Link Crew member quoted, “I would definitely help out at the next tailgate because it was so much fun for the freshmen and even as a Link Crew member. Mrs. Boyle said it was the best freshman tailgate yet because it was under control and well planned.”
Audrey: After a few rain delays, our senior class finally gathered on the softball field on Thursday, September 10th, for Senior Sunrise. Students arrived about an hour early to watch the sunrise together, enjoy doughnuts and hot chocolate, and settle in blankets and chairs across the softball field. While the sunrise was a bit shy that morning, the experience was anything but disappointing.
There was something special about seeing my fellow seniors–students who will be walking the stage together in just a couple of months– share such a simple and carefree moment before adulthood sets in. We would like to give a huge thank you to our senior class officers and our class advisor, Mrs. Gillman, for their hard work in planning and rescheduling this event. Despite the weather changes, they made it happen, and it was a beautiful way to kick off our seniors’ final year as Boyertown.
Abby: On Friday, August 28th, the BASH varsity football team, led by Coach Sands, faced Upper Perk in their first game of the season. Not only was it the first game of the season, but it was the first football game to be played on the brand-new turf field in Memorial Stadium. Players were very excited to be back on the field, and students were thrilled to be able to watch their team again under the Friday Night Lights. There was a large amount of school spirit in the stadium as BASH students flooded the student section following the red, white, and blue theme. Unfortunately, the Bears lost the game 0-24, but made up for it the following week at Governor Mifflin when they came back in the second half from a 0-14 difference to win the game 28-21. The team is looking forward to the rest of their season, feeling confident that they will have success.
Audrey: On September 9th, New Hanover Elementary School hosted a
two-in-one wonderful community event– a Kona Ice Celebration and our annual Scholastic Book Fair– which brought our school community together with warmth, enthusiasm, and strong school spirit as we welcomed students, families, staff, and volunteers into the new school year. This book fair created the joyful opportunity to connect and build community. The PTCA- sponsored Kona Ice event welcomed approximately 650 students and their siblings, with staff volunteers helping serve students, apply flavored syrups, and keep the event running smoothly. Students enjoyed spending time outdoors with friends, while parents had the opportunity to reconnect after the summer and meet other NHUF families. The Scholastic book fair also saw strong family participation, with approximately 1,000 books sold. Parent volunteers and high school Green Cord students supported every aspect of the event, from setup to teardown. We are grateful for NHUF's long-standing partnership with Scholastic, which made it possible for the PTCA to use designated Scholastic Dollars to help fund a Book Vending Machine. A very special thank you goes to the PTCA for leading and organizing both events, and to our staff, parents, and Green Cord students for their generosity.
Abby: On Friday, September 11th, the Boyertown Alumni Band, joined by the BASH and both Middle School East and West's show choirs, gave a memorial performance to remember the tragedy of 9/11 and to recognize our local first responders. The performance was held in the Middle School West auditorium, where local first responders were invited to attend and were honored throughout the evening. Under the direction of Jeffery Brunner, the Boyertown show choirs sang classic patriotic pieces such as “I Hear America Singing” and “God Bless America”. A favorite piece was the BASH show choir’s rendition of “In Remembrance". This song states that even when someone passes away, they are not to be forgotten. This was a wonderful opportunity for the middle school and high school choirs to come together as one. The members of the show choirs enjoyed getting to sing alongside the Alumni Band and to be a part of such an important performance.
Audrey: We reviewed nearly 800 student responses to our beginning-of-year survey, evenly distributed across all grade levels, regarding safety: 56.6% of students feel comfortable with physical safety, 55.3% with emotional safety (meaning bullying), and 55.1% are comfortable reporting safety concerns.
Approximately 90% know where to go for help when needed, and about 80% are aware of available clubs and activities, though only 44% understand the process to join them. Half of our students know where to access the BASH Week in Review, and most find the building easy to navigate, with freshmen showing slightly less confidence. When rating their first month on a scale of 1 to 5, nearly 48% gave us a 4. In open-ended responses, students praised our helpful and friendly teachers, the variety of clubs and events, and the current bell schedule. Key areas for improvement include hallway traffic congestion, better communication with BCTC students about events and deadlines, more spirit days, lower parking pass costs, and addressing micro-aggressions to ensure students feel taken seriously.
Abby: That concludes the September addition of the Student Board report. We thank you all for listening and wish you safe travels home this evening.
