5 Things to Know Weekly Update
July 7, 2025
Dear Colleagues:
The summer continues to be fairly calm, especially with the holiday last week. Andrea Rangno, Kristen Hill and I were, of course, at the Huntington Beach 4th of July parade, which seemed longer and hotter than usual – but it was good for the College to have a presence there. People in the crowd are always excited to tell us they are attending, or went to GWC, or in a couple of cases, work here. 😊 I hope everyone took advantage of the long weekend to relax – I know that I did!

Many of us have participated in interviews this summer and we are slowly filling positions, some of which have been empty for a while. Look for announcements of new hires (or promotions) as they come through periodically. Thanks to everyone doing interviews and especially Kezia, who has discovered the key to drafting great questions!
Summer is always a good time for campus clean up – we are having a couple of dead trees removed and others are being trimmed, and some faded signs will be replaced. Although we are not a huge campus, it’s amazing how much can break, fade, overgrow, etc. Thanks to M&O/Grounds for keeping up with it!
Moving offices and other areas due to the impending demolition at the south end of campus will be starting soon, after some areas receive new paint, carpeting, etc. We’ll keep you informed about the new locations for Human Resources, IT, Dual Enrollment/Institutional Effectiveness, Adult Education, and Distance Education as they complete their moves.
Next week, Coastline will launch its CBE (Competency-Based Education) program, and it’s something for us to watch at GWC to see if we would like to have our own in the future. They have put a lot of effort into it and we wish them success – so stay tuned.
I’ll be here on campus through Wednesday, then off to a program for new (or newish) college presidents on Thursday and Friday. A little professional development never hurts!
