Principal's Corner
Greetings Doty Families!
What a beautiful “summer” week we had! It was nice to be able to be outside with the kids before October weather returns next week.
One of the things I’ve been thinking about a lot this week is something that a woman I worked with years ago said. She said, “You can’t expect it if you didn’t teach it.” We were talking about behavior at the time but it really applies to all of teaching, every piece of it. So much of school isn’t about the actual content, it’s about teaching kids how to learn. We also have to think about what our learning priority is at the moment and then focus in on that, recognizing that there are things that we just aren’t going to worry about yet. In teaching we have to constantly remember, as excited as we might get, that we have to teach and/or remind of past teaching every piece before we can expect it from students.
In other news, Doty now hosts a large Girl Scout troop. I think the reason for the high participation is that we have the Girl Scout meetings right after school, at school. I am mentioning this as a way of inviting other groups to use the facilities here at Doty, especially those that will directly benefit our muffins. If you know of anything or are involved in any organization that needs a space, please reach out and we will see what we can do! Gym usage gets a bit hairy during basketball season but we will do our best.
Remember that there is no school Monday!
As always, thank you for sharing your students with us!
Gillian
Notes from the Nurse
As we head into a long weekend, I hope all of the Doty School Students and their families have a restful, safe and enjoyable weekend. I have started performing the hearing screenings, and will start vision screenings in the near future. Please let me know if you have any concerns about your child’s hearing or vision.
Color Blindness or Color Vision Deficiency (CVD) is the inability to see colors or shades of colors in a way that others typically see colors. One out of every 12 males has CVD whereas one out of every 200 females has CVD. It is frequently an inherited condition, and differentiating red and green is the most common difficulty. Teachers use colors in many different ways during their classes, and knowing who has CVD will help teachers focus their lessons for all to follow.
I will try to add color vision testing to my screening. If you suspect your child has difficulty with colors due to CVD, please let me know, and I will make sure I screen them. I use an online free Color Blind Test, and you may use it at home: https://enchroma.com/pages/test
If you do the test with your child at home, please let me know your results.
Thank you, Nurse Lydia
News from around the school
Written by Doty 6th graders.
PreK with Chrissy: Prek used apples to paint, they played ‘doggy doggy where's your bone’ at circle, they read books about apple pie, and they did an obstacle course in P.E.
K/1st with Ms. Julie: The kindergarteners have been practicing writing the letters i and m, and have also been studying longer vs shorter and writing numbers 1-10. The 1st graders have been doing number bonds to ten in math, and with Ms. Frantz, they have been practicing tapping out cvc words. The entire class has been doing Halloween related things.
1st/2nd with Ms. Frantz: This week in the ½ class they worked on mermation, making little paper birds to simulate this effect. As for their read aloud, they read Ivy And Bean and mapped out the characters and their actions. For math the first graders practiced making ten and the second graders worked on graphing this in their room.
3/4 with Ms. Fayle: They are writing persuasive pieces about solving problems in the world. In third grade math they are working on addition with regrouping by peeling aliens off of their peers.
5/6 with Ms. Honi: On Fridays 5/6th graders partake in "Friday Fitness" which is fun for kids. They get to take a break and go outside and do a fun activity. They have made a human knot, played a game with popping balloons and walked up Gould Hill. Students like getting a break from school before the weekend.
