January 2025

Greetings, Lions family! The new year is upon us, and we are excited for what we will accomplish in the first half of 2025! Recapping last semester, we saw many successes with our athletic programs. Our football team was declared Region Champions, Lower-State Runner-Ups, and defeated Dillon High School for the first time in many seasons. Additionally, our varsity girls tennis, volleyball, and golf teams saw success and made it to postseason play. One of our tennis players, senior Cayden Graham, defeated Waccamaw High School’s #1 seeded player for the first time in LHS history, and we had a female cross-country runner, Austin Stanley, who won an individual medal at the State Cross Country Championship! Our winter sports have started strong, with our wrestling and basketball teams seeing solid success. Academically, all core content areas worked with nationally-recognized consultants to improve classroom pedagogy. This year’s instructional focus is to increase rigor and engagement in all classes. We are excited to report that our school report card rating increased a level this year, and we are working diligently to increase even higher in 2025!

Loris High School Student Spotlight

Zamire “Moon” Gerald - 11th Grader

Many people know Moon Gerald as the varsity starting quarterback who led the Lions to become region champions and lower-state runner-ups during the 2024 season; but what most don’t know is how well-rounded a young man Moon is. Currently, he has the highest GPA of any junior who plays on the varsity football team. He is a member of the LHS Leadership Club, Senior Beta Club, and Mt. Vernon Missionary Baptist Church. He also works part-time for Crescent Shores in North Myrtle Beach and helps coach his younger brother’s recreation football team. In the little spare time he has, he enjoys playing video games, working out and lifting weights, watching movies, and playing football with friends.

Moon’s favorite teacher at LHS was Mrs. Christy Fowler who taught him Biology because she made the content interesting, and she was helpful and understanding. His most inspirational figures have been his parents because they invest in him and believe in him. He hopes to one day be able to pay them back for all they have sacrificed to help him succeed. Moon recalls his favorite memories at LHS to be winning region in football and being named an All-State player. He also has enjoyed the memories and relationships he has built with his peers. Moon says he tries to “find the fun in every day at school”.

Following in his mother’s and brother’s footsteps, Moon plans to graduate from LHS next year and further his football career at the collegiate level. His top pick is to play for the Tennessee Volunteers. Moon is a solid example of what all high school students should aspire to be, and we look forward to watching the successes he accomplishes in the future!

Loris High School Senior Spotlight

Savannah Tyler - 12th Grader

Savannah Tyler is a Loris native who will be a second-generation LHS alumnus. She has always held a lot of pride for her town and tries to be as active in her community as possible. She is a member of the varsity cheer squad, FFA, National Honor Society, Senior Beta Club, Teacher Cadet, HCS Student Superintendent’s Cabinet, and Student Council. In her spare time, she enjoys cheerleading, hanging out with her friends and family, going to the beach, and traveling (her favorite destination being Hawaii). Savannah also works part-time at Melt ice cream shop in North Myrtle Beach.

Savannah’s favorite teachers have been Mrs. Hall, Mrs. Kelliher, and Mrs. Jordan because all three of them are positive role models for their students, genuinely care about them, and let their lights shine for all to see. Savannah has been most inspired by her mother who is kind, caring, a strong Christian role model, and works hard to give Savannah and her brother the best possible childhoods. Savannah recalls her favorite high school memories as being the 2024 football season where the Lions were region champions, lower-state runner ups, and defeated Dillon High School for the first time in many years. She has also enjoyed having classes with a variety of different people and creating new friendships.

Upon graduation, Savannah hopes to attend Clemson University because she is a huge Tigers fan and is really excited to experience campus life at Clemson! Her time as a Teacher Cadet has helped her develop a passion for young students, so she is considering majoring in Early Childhood Education. Savannah’s advice to her underclassmen peers is to “always try your hardest and be nice to people. Kindness goes a long way. Take time to hang out with your friends outside of school and make the most of each day”.
