Message to Families - 5/24 Texas School Shooting

Dear Weymouth Public Schools' Families, Dear Weymouth Public Schools' Families,

As the heartbreaking news continues to unfold related to the elementary school shooting in Texas today, I want to remind everyone we are a district committed to the physical safety and emotional wellbeing of our students, staff and families.

The loss of any child is absolutely tragic, and the news of a school shooting at an elementary school is incomprehensible. Please check in with your children at home this week, as it is likely they may hear things on the news, from their peers, and at school related to this incident.

Below are some resources and guidance to help guide you through these difficult conversations:

From the American Psychological Association (APA) -

  • How to talk to children about difficult news. Tips for parents and other caregivers on how to guide the conversation in a proactive and supportive way.

  • Talking to kids when they need help. How to open the lines of communication and build trust

  • Helping your children manage distress in the aftermath of a shooting. Tips for children of all ages

From the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) -

  • Talking to children about violence - Tips for Parents and Teachers

As always, our school counselors, psychologists, social workers, the SEL team, resources officers, our educators, and school administrators are available in our schools to provide support to our students and families. At the district level we will review our safety procedures, and our schools will ensure our students know they are physically, mentally, and emotionally safe and supported in every way possible.

As your Superintendent there is little I can say to take away the heartbreak, and unimaginable feeling that comes from such a senseless tragedy. Please do not hesitate to reach out to any member of our school community, including our administrative team, if we can help support you in any way.

Best Regards,

Robert Wargo

Superintendent
