The BULL'S EYE
06/13/2025
A Message from Principal Moore-German
This week, we held our first livestreamed 8th Grade Recognition Ceremony. It was a pleasure to celebrate our 8th graders, their accomplishments and their contributions to Hereford Middle School. We thank Mrs. Feiden for planning the event, the PTA for partnering with us to explore options and providing decor for the celebration, and Mr. Putnam for livestreaming the program via You Tube. We thank Ms. Nicole Frederick of NNF Photography for taking complimentary photos of each of our 8th graders. I've already seen a preview and I will tell you that parents and care givers are going to love these photos! Ms. Frederick has such talent, and we are honored that she volunteered her time to provide this service. The program from the Recognition Ceremony and some highlights can be found below in the newsletter.
The celebration continued today when we heard that four of our students are published in the 2025 Team BCPS Haiku Contest. Below you will find a link to the electronic copy and a photo of the three students who were present in school today. We're so proud of our Bulls and we're grateful for their extraordinary teachers Mrs. George, Ms. Arafat and Mrs. McShane.
Yearbooks were distributed to eighth grade yesterday and sixth and seventh grade today. We hope that our eighth graders have enjoyed their "Hereford Era" as much as we've enjoyed them. If you're child wasn't in school when yearbooks were distributed, they will receive them on Monday. If not in school on Monday, parents are encouraged to pick up yearbooks from the main office. If you have questions about your order, we encourage you to contact school on Monday, as this is the last day our yearbook advisor, Ms. Schanberger will be in school until the fall.
Also on Monday, students in grades 6 and 7 will receive their attendance and honor roll certificates. If your child isn't in school, you may pick up your awards over the summer. Our summer office hours are listed below.
Monday, June 16th is our very last day of the 2024-25 school year. Not too long ago, I arrived at Hereford Middle and instantly knew it was a special place. It's been the honor of my career to serve as your principal, and I look forward to an even greater year ahead!
Don't forget to encourage READING for pleasure! Please review our summer reading challenge and summer iXL challenge. Summer provides a nice break for our students but also presents an opportunity for students to explore interests. Why not explore books of their choosing? Mr. Thomas has some suggestions in his Library news segment. We'll celebrate all of our summer readers at our first ever BULL BASH!
Mark your calendar to check your email for our next Bull's Eye newsletter on July 11, 2025!
Warm Regards,
Mrs. Moore-German, Principal

6th Grade News
Students in Maestra Velda's and Senora Blevins' classes wrote, illustrated, and published their own books about food.
Students in Madame Bryson's classes are working on their final presentation of the school year. Since they learned about clothing and accessories in Unit 4, they are tasked with inventing an item that uses technology (ideally that is useful for a teenager). They will present this using a shark tank format.

Helping Reluctant Readers Find Their Spark
Often, I am asked "how do I get my kid to read?" This is not an easy question to answer. Just between us, I was a reluctant reader throughout most of my elementary, junior high and high school years. This frustrated my first grader teacher/book loving mom to no end. I was a strong reader and never complained about reading for class, it's just that there were hundreds of other things I would rather do than read on my own. In my experience the following two strategies worked for my mom and I have seen them work well for others.
First, Let kids choose what they read. Don't book shame! Let them read graphic novels, manga, comics, sports stories, biographies, books based on movies or games. What matters most is that they are reading and that they feel free to explore their interests. For many reluctant readers, confidence comes first, and as that confidence builds, they realize that reading can actually be fun. Choice fosters ownership, and ownership leads to motivation.
Second, make reading a shared experience. I loved reading aloud with my mom and grandparents. Now, I love listening to audiobooks as I drive. So, choose a book you and your reluctant reader will both enjoy and take turns reading to each other. Maybe start a casual family book club. This can help to take the pressure off makes reading feel more social and less like homework. When kids see that reading can be fun, meaningful, and connected to real relationships, they’re more likely to stick with it.
