Our FACS Classes have been busy.

Our FACS students have been learning through real, hands-on experiences this fall- and it's been delicious.

They started the year with fresh corn on the cob, which they processed, canned, and enjoyed alongside home fried potatoes and mashed potatoes. They extracted honey straight from the frame brought in from the bee hives, then baked rolls and bread to enjoy it with. They also worked with apples to make pies, apple butter, and apple chips using dehydrator.

The senior class explored careers, using O*NET, researched post-secondary options, and created polished resumes- and we're proud to share that Emma used hers to land a job at Dollar General!

Sewing skills were another focus this semester. They learned to sew on buttons, patch holes, and repair seams. Then, putting those skills to use, they created adorable "monsters" for our kindergarten and 1st grade students.

The 8th grade FACS class hosted a family dinner to show off their learning. They planned the menu, mailed invitations, and prepared a full feast featuring fried chicken, mashed potatoes, canned corn, apple butter, Hawaiian sweet rolls, cinnamon rolls, and waffles.

The senior class also planned and prepared the dinner for our CSIP meeting, carefully budgeting for a meal for 35 people. Their menu included marinated chicken, green beans, mac & cheese, salad, Oreo trifle , and banana pudding.

In life skills, students have been developing important daily living and independence skills through hands-on activities. They have practiced preparing simple meals such as peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, grilled cheese, and tortilla pizzas, learning to follow directions, use kitchen tools safely, and clean up after themselves. The older students have taken these skills a step further by participating in grocery shopping for various classes. They work on creating shopping lists, budgeting, comparing prices, and locating the correct items in the store. These experiences help students build confidence, responsibility, and real-world problem-solving skills that support their independence beyond the classroom.

FAFSA Parent Information: Steps to Complete the Application

Filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is an important step in securing financial aid for college. Here’s how parents can help:

  1. Create an FSA ID: Both the student and one parent need to create a Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID at studentaid.gov.
  2. Gather Documents: Collect Social Security numbers, federal tax returns for the 2024 year, W-2s, bank statements, and records of investments.
  3. Start the FAFSA: Go to studentaid.gov and select “Start Here” to begin the application. The student will sign in as it is their FAFSA.
  4. Enter Student and Parent Information: Fill in personal and financial details as prompted. Use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool if available to import tax information.
  5. List Schools: Add the colleges your student is interested in attending so they receive your FAFSA information.
  6. Sign and Submit: Both the student and parent must sign the FAFSA electronically using their FSA IDs, then submit the application.
  7. Review Confirmation: After submission, you’ll receive a confirmation page. Watch for follow-up emails about your student’s financial aid eligibility.
