October at the ECC

Dear Staff and Families,

As we head into November, we want to thank our families for your continued support and partnership! October was a busy and fun-filled month at Quarry Hill, with lots of learning, exciting activities, and wonderful memories made along the way. Our students have been amazing, and we are so proud of the growth, kindness, curiosity, and excitement for learning we see each day.

We hope all of our families have a happy and safe Halloween filled with fun, treats, and special memories!

Thank you for everything you do to support your child and our school community. We are so grateful to have such wonderful students and supportive families as part of our Quarry Hill family.

Wishing everyone a happy, healthy, and wonderful November!

Little Readers, Big Dreams!

Warmly,
Penny Ann Manteria

Curriculum Updates

Grade 1:

This month in CKLA Skills we are learning to identify nouns and determine if they are a person, place, or thing. We have introduced and have been practicing Tricky Words. Tricky words are words that children learn to read by sight because some parts of the words don’t follow the spelling patterns they have learned yet Students learn to:

  • Recognize the word when they see it.

  • Read the word automatically.

  • Notice which part of the word is tricky.

  • Practice reading and spelling the word.

In CKLA Knowledge we have finished our unit focusing on fairy tales and fables. We have learned about the moral of the story. We have begun our unit From Nose to Toes. We are learning about the human body, how its systems work together, and how to stay healthy.

In math we learned about Place Value, Students learned how to represent, read, and write numbers using tens and ones. Students developed an understanding of how numbers are organized and how place value helps them count and compare numbers.

Kindergarten:

In CKLA Skills students are focused on learning to blend two and three sound words. They have been introduced to the letters m, t, d, c, g, a, i and o. As we finish up this unit in the next week students will also be introduced to the concept of “tricky words”. These are words that do not follow the phonics rules and must be memorized. We begin with the number words: one, two, and three.

In CKLA Knowledge we are finishing up our unit on the Five Senses. During this unit students learned about each of our five senses and which body parts we experience the senses through. Students also learned about biographies through stories about Ray Charles and Hellen Keller who both accomplished so much in their lives despite the loss of one or more of their senses.

In math students have learned to count, compare, and write numbers to 10 and in science we have focused on plants and animals and how they impact the environment around them.

Preschool:

During October, we wrapped up our “All About My World” unit and began exploring the wonders of fall, including animal migration, habitats, and leaves. In November, we’ll continue our fall studies by learning about apples, pumpkins, and the journey from farm to table. We’ll also explore the theme of Togetherness through discussions of Thanksgiving, community involvement, and family traditions. We invite you to share any special traditions or celebrations your family enjoys with your child’s teacher!
