Building Home Routines to Support School Success
Welcome back!! We had a great first two weeks! We are starting to get our routines down and beginning curriculum. Children thrive when their day has a familiar structure, both in the classroom and at home. Establishing clear, predictable routines at home helps smooth daily transitions and lowers morning stress for the whole family. Some key routines that directly support your child's school day include:
Night-Before Prep: Layout clothes, pack backpacks, and prepare lunches together in the evening to avoid a rushed morning.
Consistent Sleep & Morning Rhythms: A set bedtime and a steady wake-up schedule ensure your child arrives refreshed and ready to learn.
A Dedicated Workspace: Designate a quiet, organized spot and a set time each day for reading, reviewing school materials, completing homework, or placing your school materials so that they are all in one spot.
After-School Reset: Create a routine for unpacking backpacks, reviewing school notes, and taking time to unwind after a busy day. This also includes designating a space to keep all school materials including: backpacks, library books, lunchboxes, etc.
It’s been a fantastic week in the classrooms! Students have been following new schedules, watching school expectations videos, and building classroom Social Contracts to hold each other accountable.
Ask your kids:
What words are on their classroom Social Contract?
Can they name our 3 non-negotiables? (Hint: Listening, effort, and no put-downs!)
Hope you had a great weekend, Mustangs!

We are excited to share the letter below with you which outlines the values and heart of our classroom/school-wide Social Contracts as well as how we hold each other accountable.

Capturing Kids' Hearts
CKH Monthly Theme-Empathy
Mustang students and staff are working hard to connect with each other's hearts this month! Each classroom is developing their Social Contract which represents the student voice at our school where classes have committed to how they will treat each other. This is a tool that encourages students to establish a set of mutually agreed-upon behaviors or rules within the classroom to promote respect, responsibility, and a sense of ownership in their learning environment. These are the key components of the Social Contract:
Key Components of the Social Contract:
Student-Led Creation: Instead of the teacher simply dictating the rules, students are actively involved in creating the classroom promise. This gives them a sense of ownership and responsibility for the classroom culture.
Clear Expectations: Students discuss and agree on behaviors they believe are essential for creating a safe, respectful, and productive learning environment.
Mutual Respect: The promise emphasizes the importance of mutual respect. Students not only agree to treat others well, but they also acknowledge that their actions impact others in the classroom.
Commitment to the Promise: Once the social contract is established, both students and teachers agree to uphold it. Teachers model the behavior and reinforce the contract regularly to ensure it remains a living, active agreement.
Accountability and Reflection: When students break the promise, it’s an opportunity for reflection and learning, rather than punishment. The focus is on understanding the behavior and discussing how to improve moving forward. The teacher helps guide students through this process, reinforcing the contract as a tool for positive change.
We also have our PBIS matrix which shows our three expectations of Be Safe, Be Respectful, and Be Responsible which represents the school voice. We are learning what it looks like to be a Mustang around each area of the school and being intentional with teaching these skills.

School Safety Drills
During the course of the school year, our buildings are obligated to practice at least 5 Fire Drills, 2 Tornado Drills and 3 Lockdown drills. At times, we do have our YSU Liason or other officers from the Police Department assist in our drills. We cover with our students the locations of where to go for each drill, what to do during specific drills, and how to properly evacuate when it is needed. You can also find this information in your child's Handbook at the front of the student agenda.
During the first weeks of school, classes read the story, I'm Not Scared, I'm Prepared book in their class with their teachers. This book focused on the main components of the safety protocols that we work on with children.
I also encourage you to check out our district website where we have information that pertains to our district school safety. Click here to get to the website.
Mcguire Mustangs are Safe, Respectful and Responsible!
At McGuire Elementary, our school expectations are Be Safe, Be Respectful, and Be Responsible and we are committed to teaching and reinforcing positive behavior expectations in all areas of the school from the classroom to the playground. Each area of our school day, has a focused set of positive expectations that we teach, model, and practice - on what it looks like to be safe, respectful, and responsible.
Our Mustang matrix is at the front of your student's agenda in the pages included for the student handbook, we encourage you to review these expectations at home with your child too.
Daily our students earn Dojo Points for meeting positive expectations, we recognize students with our Mustang Tickets, Weekly Drawings, Positive Office Referrals, Positive Postcards mailed home, and Students of the Month.
We know our students are still growing and developing mentally and socially, so we recognize it is always a work in progress when teaching and reteaching expectations. We utilize restorative practices - including repairing the harm, circle ups, and more.
We appreciate your partnership in supporting our McGuire Mustangs to help make McGuire a great place to be!
