Dear 6th Grade Families,

This past week was an exciting and productive one for our 6th-grade students!

In social studies, students explored ancient Egypt by writing hieroglyphics using ink and even creating their own mummies, which are now displayed in their classrooms. They worked collaboratively on presentations, sharing what they’ve learned about this fascinating civilization.

In math, students completed an assessment. Please take a moment to check in with your child about their progress on mastering the math standards.

In ELA, students reflected on their families, showcasing their maturity and thoughtfulness in their writing. They also engaged in self-assessment, using a rubric to identify their strengths ("glows") and areas for growth ("grows").

In science, Mr. Sommer's class is highlighted in this week’s newsletter—be sure to check it out for more details on their engaging activities!

Looking ahead, I’m excited to observe the meaningful learning opportunities our teachers have planned for your children. It’s always a joy to see their growth and collaboration in the classroom.

As we face these frigid winter days, please ensure your child comes to school dressed in appropriate winter apparel. Additionally, remind them to charge their iPads and bring their binders to school daily.

This week, I’ve been reading Unearthing Joy by Gholdy Muhammad, which offers valuable insights into fostering reflection and connection. As a parent myself of a middle schooler, high schooler, and college student, I understand the challenge of getting more than a one-word response about their school day.

Here are a few reflective questions from the book that might spark meaningful conversations with your child:

  • How would you describe yourself to someone who doesn’t know you?
  • How would your teachers and classmates describe you?
  • What can be done to help you feel better about being at school, and how can you communicate that to others?

Thank you for your continued support in your child’s learning journey. Let’s make it another great week!

Stay warm,

Ms. Brunson

Sommer's Sixth Science - Ball and Cup Lab Sommer's Sixth Science - Ball and Cup Lab

For the past 2 weeks, students in Mr. Sommer's science classes worked on a cooperative lab project called, "Ball & Cup Lab". Students needed to work together and think creatively to get a ball that was released 30 cm from the edge of a table to land in a cup 40 cm away from the table with at least an 80% accuracy rate. Students were not allowed to touch the ball in any way after the 30cm mark and nothing could be taped to the table, cup, or floor. The only materials they could work with were cardboard, tape, paper, folders, books, and rulers. All students all did a wonderful job on the project! For more details about this science lab or to see the video slideshow, email Mr. Sommer at sommerb@district65.net.
