News from the Nurse

With the change of season comes a change in the weather and the arrival of cold weather. We value and support the opportunity for our students to have recess outside whenever possible.

Recess benefits students by:

  • Increasing their level of physical activity.

  • Improving their memory, attention, and concentration.

  • Helping them stay on-task in the classroom.

  • Reducing disruptive behavior in the school.

  • Improving their social and emotional development (e.g., learning how to share and negotiate).

Our goal is to have students go outside for recess whenever possible. Students must wear the appropriate winter outerwear.

  • Students should be wearing long pants. No shorts in the winter months.

  • Students should come to school wearing a winter jacket, gloves, scarves, hat, etc.

  • Please discuss with your child the need to wear jackets at recess. Winter outerwear should not be removed when it is cold outside.

  • If your student needs a winter coat, please contact your school nurse and we may be able to help.

  • A sweatshirt or hooded shirt is not considered appropriate outerwear when it is cold outside.

  • Warm shoes should be worn. No flip-flops or sandals during the winter months.

Encourage your child to go outside and play after school as well!! If your student needs a hat or gloves tell them to stop in at the nurse. I have new hats and gloves available for students.

Recess Temperatures

As stated in our Student Handbook, if the real feel and actual temperature are both over 20 degrees, students go outside for recess. If the grass area is snow covered or too muddy, students are still able to be on the blacktop. Please keep this in mind as you dress your children over the winter months so that they are dressed appropriately to be outside for recess.

If you are in need of any winter clothes for your children, please contact Mr. Baughman at mbaughman@basd.net

Beds for Students in Need

Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP) is a nonprofit that builds and delivers handmade, fully furnished beds to children ages 3-17 who need them. The Lock Haven chapter recently expanded to include the Bellefonte area, and they have extra beds to give to children before Christmas! To apply for a bed or beds online, visit https://shpbeds.org/apply/

SHP is also looking for local individuals who want to help with deliveries, or assist with building more beds. To find out more about volunteering, contact Laura Orndorf, Chapter President, at laura.orndorf@shpbeds.org

Yearbooks

You can now order your copy of the 2024-25 Bellefonte Elementary School yearbook! Go to https://jostensyearbooks.com/?REF=A09880953 to place your order. The order deadline is April 12th. Yearbooks will be $16.50 plus tax, with optional personalization available at additional cost.

    • Volunteering at classroom parties

  • Field Day volunteers

  • Holiday Shop volunteers

Registered volunteers will be approved by the Bellefonte Area School District Board of Directors after they have submitted the following documents:

  1. Volunteer Form

  2. Statement of Confidentiality

  3. Residency Affidavit & Arrest/Conviction Report
