January Overview
Winter Season 💙
English
In English, students are starting the second semester by studying argumentative elements and writing an argumentative essay. They will use the writing process to develop their essays.
Class Donations- We are in need of Kleenex and prepackaged, allergy friendly (no nuts, peanuts, etc...) candy for some classroom rewards/incentives. If you would like to donate Kleenex or candy, please send it with your child to give to their English teacher. Thanks in advance!
Math
Math is learning proportional relationships. Students will be able to identify and represent proportional relationships between quantities by analyzing tables, graphs, and equations to determine if a constant of proportionality exists.
Geography
In Geography, students are studying Africa's physical and human geography. We are exploring major landforms such as deserts, rivers and rainforests, and how these features influence climate, resources and human settlement. Students are developing map and atlas skills while learning about Africa's diverse regions. This unit also emphasizes geographic reasoning and understanding how the physical environment has shaped history and continues to affect daily life across the continent.
Science
Welcome back to seventh grade science for a new year of learning. This month, we will begin by exploring kinetic and potential energy. We will learn how they relate to each other and how they affect various aspects of our lives. These lessons will include several hands-on activities so that your students can easily understand and apply these fundamental scientific principles.
Literacy
Literacy is starting our literature circle novels this quarter. We are first reading the first chapter of each novel and practicing skills needed for this unit before students plot into groups to read their designated novels. Student will have 5 books to choose from: Ghost by Jason Reynolds, Harbor Me by Jacqueline Woods on, Uprising by Margaret Peterson Haddix, Front Desk by Kelly Yang, and Michael Vey: The Prisoner of Cell 25 by Richard Paul Evans. Students will also rotate roles in their groups, taking on a new role each week: Discussion Director, Summarizer, Illustrator, Figurative Language Finder, and Word Wizard. Our first day of lit circles will be following the long weekend. We will continue to go to the library for media lessons during this unit.
