Letter from the 'Editor'
Hello LSSPs,
I been thinking and talking a lot about the importance of relationships and connection. Even the most reclusive introvert such as myself knows that being connected with others and being involved with groups is a pretty deep human need. Being able to find a group that we can feel a part of where we can share interests, build relationships, and grow as an individual is crucial.
This is always an area that I have felt like we dropped the ball with in special education. Our students are so focused on academics, we can sometimes miss supporting the whole child. Students in special education are much less likely to be engaged in clubs or organizations within our schools. Those that do have interests may also find them limited by family finances.
That's where the Tommy Tranchin award comes in. I recently learned about this amazing opportunity for North Texas students in grades 8-12 who have disabilities. The scholarship money is designed to help support the costs of growth opportunities in activities that student are interested and excel in.
This is a chance for us to provide some support for our students outside of their academics and spend some time and energy in something they love.
