Dear Garfield Families,

We are proud to share that Garfield Elementary is the only school in California to receive the Civic Learning Award of Distinction, recognizing our excellence in civic engagement. Our leadership students played a major role in this honor through their service projects, including the canned food drive, our upcoming American Heart Association event, and schoolwide initiatives such as the Valley Animal Shelter collection and The Giving Tree.

The Civic Learning Award ceremony will take place Monday, December 15th from 9:30 - 10:30 am in the Garfield library. We are honored to welcome Fresno County Superior Court Judge Robert Mangano (and Garfield parent!) who will present the award, along with CUSD district administrators. Because this is a small and formal school event with limited space, attendance is restricted to participating students and invited guests. We will livestream the ceremony on our YouTube channel:

Our leadership students also participated in an essay contest focused on the Constitution. Congratulations to Emilio Barrera, Ambar Batth, and Evelyn Fosse, who will read their essays at the ceremony. In addition, several students submitted thoughtful questions for Judge Mangano. Ellery Howard, Ella Elms, Cyrus Ross-Cappelletti, Alexia Romo, Stella Salas, and Austyn Tirapelle will have the opportunity to ask their questions during the event.

We are excited to celebrate this tremendous honor together and will share plenty of photos on our social media channels.

As we head into Winter Break, I want to express my gratitude for each of you. Thank you for being part of the Garfield community and helping make our school such a wonderful place. Wishing you and your loved ones a joyful holiday season and a very happy new year. See you in 2026!
