Make Proactive Advising Work For You

Proactive advising is when you take the time to proactively reach out to your students throughout the semester. The idea is that we don't wait for them to come to us, but we go to them and try to build relationships from day one. We recommend you reach out to your advisees at least three times during the semester or more depending on your student population. Once your caseload is assigned, you will be given a communication calendar with sample content to help get you started. This calendar includes key points of outreach throughout the semester.

Find Your Advisee List

Log into your MyBristol, then click on the "Advisors" section, then click on Advisee Listing. This will give you your list of advisees.

  • If you scroll towards the bottom, you will see a button that says "Display email list" and this will put all the emails one place where you can then copy and paste them to send an email.

Advising Tips

1. Put your meeting notes in Degree Works. This is especially helpful if a student has a Faculty Advisor and they are off contract. We can pick up where you left off. The student can also see the notes. A link with Degree Works FAQ's and tutorials can be found below.

2. Offer multiple appointment types, including phone, video or in person.

3. If you are using a Bristol Laptop you can use Bristol's phone system as long as you have an extension. If not, you can use a free service called Google Voice. Google voice is a way for you to have a phone appointment or text without giving out your personal phone number.

Note: For Google Voice, you will need to use a Gmail account. Google Voice is easy and free, and you don't have to share your personal number with your students. A link to a tutorial on how to set up Google Voice is included at the bottom of this page.

Degree Works FAQ's and Tutorials
This page has a list of FAQ's about degree works and tutorial videos on how to use degree works.
Academic Catalog
Use the catalog to assist you with advising your students. This is especially important for new students that are not in degree works yet, and for looking at the pre-admission requirements for our competitive health programs.

Developmental Courses- Math, Reading and English Co-requisites.

The English department has updated their developmental courses and there will no longer be stand alone RDG 080, RDG 090 or ENG 090 courses. The students will either need to enroll in ENG 091 or ENG 092 depending on their placement scores.

The math department runs co-requisite math courses, MTH 119S, MTH 125S, MTH 127S, MTH 152S and MTH 131S for students that place into developmental math. The math they take is dependent on their program of study. Some students do get exemptions and this will be listed on the degree works page, the math that is required for their program will also be listed in their degree works page.

Please see the Multiple Measures Policy below

Multiple-Measures Policy
This policy outlines the test scores with the current placement requirements. These are based on testing scores after 2021, so older scores will be different.

This document shows the conversion for the Reading and Writing/English scores and their developmental courses to the current scores and courses.

Advising Transfer Students

We offer several opportunities to prepare our students for transfer. For some the students need to enroll in them early on (ex: BCC2BSU and Bristol+UMD) but for others this is not the case. Below is a breakdown of our transfer programs students can participate in based the amount of credits they've earned.

Appointments

I am currently using Microsoft Bookings to schedule my phone, in-person and virtual appointments.

  • Below is a link to a training on how to set up a bookings page. However, I am more than happy to do a one-on-one training with you
  • There are other booking systems out there such as, You Can Book Me and Calendly, but I like to be consistent with the college

If you do not have a Bristol laptop and/or a phone extension and can't use Avaya, then you can use Google Voice to conduct a phone appointment. A video tutorial is below. You will need a google account/gmail to set up Google Voice
