Back to School Night - Thursday, September 24
HMS is excited to welcome parents and caregivers this Thursday evening for our annual "Back-to-School Night".
As a reminder, we will be running one session for all three grades. All parents should plan to attend from 6:15 to approximately 8:00 PM.
Parents and Caregivers should plan to follow their middle schooler's Day One schedule of classes, which can be found on Aspen. We recommend that you have a printed copy of your child's schedule to refer to throughout the evening. There will be student representatives from the HMS Student Council on hand to help you find classes and answer questions you might have while visiting our school.
The schedule for that evening will be:
- A Block: 6:15–6:27
B Block: 6:31–6:43
- C Block: 6:47–6:59
- D Block: 7:03–7:15
- E Block: 7:19–7:31
- F Block: 7:35–7:47
- G Block: 7:51–8:03
Parking
In anticipation of a strong turnout, we've made arrangements with our neighbors to allow HMS families to use their parking lots for this evening. The current available options are . . .
- Park here at HMS. This will fill up early, so plan accordingly. Please do not park along Rosemary Lane.
- Park at the Hingham Nursery School on Rosemary Lane.
- Park at Congregation Sha'aray Shalom off of Main St.
- Park at Weston Nursery on Main St.
We ask that you keep in mind that the classroom presentations will begin promptly at 6:15, so please give yourself enough time to park and make it to your child's A block class.
Special note to parents attending the South Elementary School Curriculum Night for grades 1 and 5 . . . there will be a shuttle bus to take you from South to HMS, departing South at approximately 6:05. Please plan to leave your vehicles there and enjoy the ride!
We look forward to seeing you!
You Say You Want a Revolution . . .
This past Wednesday, students and faculty had the opportunity to engage in a day of learning connected to our One Book, One School summer reading selection, Rebellion 1776 by Laurie Halse Anderson. The day began with the Hingham Militia greeting our students with a hearty "huzzah" as they arrived, and consisted of lessons that connected to the novel. Students engaged in lessons ranging from science lessons related smallpox outbreaks to math lessons that connected to taxation without representation.
Thanks to all who helped make this day so memorable, with a special note of appreciation to the Hingham Historical Society for their partnership throughout the spring and summer!
The Adventure Club climbed to new heights at Tree Top Adventures for their first trip of the year! Watch for information on upcoming trips here in the HMS Connection, in our Daily Notices, and in our Week-at-a-Glance.
Family Homework
Greetings from Hingham Middle School!
This week we are asking all families to take some time to complete either the "Returning Students Re-Registration" or the "New Student Registration" in Aspen.
ALL families must complete this process, as it replaces many of the paper forms previously sent home with students, and provides us with important information about our students.
Thank you!
Attention All Parents and Caregivers! Action Needed!
In order to keep our Aspen information accurate and up-to-date, we ask that ALL families either register (for students new to HPS) or re-register (for returning students) following one of the two procedures below.
At this time, only about 20% of families have completed this process!
This workflow includes annual health information and medication authorization needed by our nurses, so parents are asked to please complete it as soon as possible.
Returning Student Re-Registration (OLRR)
Families with students currently enrolled in Hingham Public Schools must complete the Online Re-Registration (OLRR) process each school year.
Instructions for Returning Student Re-Registration (OLRR): [View HERE]
Families NEW to the Hingham Public Schools
If you are enrolling for the first time in the Hingham Public Schools, please refer to the New Student Registration Instructions before beginning the process.
Instructions for creating an Aspen Family Account:[View HERE]
Instructions for New Student Registration (OLR): [View HERE]
Current Hingham families should not use New Student Registration unless they are enrolling a child who has never attended Hingham Public Schools. Selecting New Student Registration for an existing student may create duplicate records.
Keeping Our Schools Safe - How to Report Bullying
The Hingham Public School District expects that all members of the school community will treat each other in a civil manner and with respect for differences. Acts of bullying by students and staff (which include cyberbullying) are prohibited. Retaliation by students and staff against a person who reports bullying or provides information during a bullying investigation is also prohibited.
Any instances of bullying can be reported anonymously through the form found here.
Thank you for helping us keep Hingham Middle School a place where all students feel a sense of belonging and can focus on learning.
Grade Six Soccer Tournament
The annual Sixth Grade Soccer Tournament begins after school this week and we hope to see a great turn out!
Student will compete with each other based on which Social Studies class they are assigned to.
This week's matches are:
- Monday - Voyagers E vs. Navigators C
- Tuesday - Explorers A vs. Navigators F
- Thursday - Voyagers B vs. Explorers F
No soccer experience necessary! Come out and have fun with your friends!
Chromebook News
Important Chromebook Update for Families
On October 1, we are making a configuration change to student Chromebooks to help ensure that the Blocksi monitoring extension continues to work properly.
A Reminder About Blocksi - Blocksi is the classroom management tool installed on HMS student Chromebooks. It helps the school provide a safer, more focused online learning environment by allowing the school to manage and monitor student internet access while at school.
Why is this change needed? - In some cases, the Blocksi extension can become inactive or experience problems because of information stored locally on the Chromebook. We are enabling a Chromebook setting that helps prevent these issues and provides students with a fresh, clean environment when they sign in.
What does this mean for my student? - When a student signs out of or shuts down the Chromebook, locally stored user data on that device will be erased.
Students should:
Save schoolwork to their Google Drive.
Avoid keeping important files only in the Chromebook's local storage (locally stored files on the Chromebook hard drive).
Be aware that downloaded files and other locally stored images, videos and information will be removed when they sign out.
To see locally stored files, open the “Files” app on the Chromebook. This will allow you to view any files that may have been downloaded and stored local to the Chromebook. If there are files that need to be kept, please be sure to move/upload them to the Google Drive before October 1.
How to move local files to Google Drive:
Using the Files App (Drag and Drop)
Open the Launcher (the circle icon in the bottom-left corner).
Select Files to open the file manager window.
Click on My Files and open Downloads or whichever local folder contains your files.
Click and hold the file or folder you want to move.
Drag the item over to Google Drive in the left-hand menu and release it into My Drive or a specific subfolder.
Using the Web Browser (Manual Upload)
Open the Google Drive website in your Chrome browser.
Click the + New button in the top-left corner.
Select File upload or Folder upload.
Choose your local Chromebook file from the dialogue window and click Open
Will my student's Google Drive files be deleted?
No. Files and information saved or synced to the student's Google account, such as files in Google Drive, will remain available.
Do families need to do anything to the Chromebook?
No special action is required. The setting will be managed by the school on student Chromebooks.
This change is intended to help keep Blocksi working reliably and provide students with a consistent and safer online learning environment.
Chromebook Insurance Reminder
Enrollment for the insurance plan is open through this Friday, September 25.
If you already purchased a plan, thank you. If you purchased a plan last year, you need to renew for this school year.
Once again we are using Xerox IT Solutions for the optional Chromebook insurance plans for the 2026-2027 school year. Insurance plans are not required however they are highly recommended. Insurance coverage will start in early October.
All claims will be filed by HMS Technology, on your behalf.
The plan offers unlimited claims and no deductibles.
The plan cost is $23 for each device for one year which is cheaper than the cost to replace the most common problem we see, a broken LCD screen ($32, cost of the part).
Enrollment for an insurance plan is open now until September 27th. You can go to this link for more information and making a payment: https://files-backend.assets.thrillshare.com/documents/asset/uploaded_file/4900/Hms/3c8ee130-3cd0-480e-839d-742c76abf305/2026-2027-ChromebookXEROXInsuranceFlyer.pdf?disposition=inline
Additional Chromebook information can be found on the Chromebook page on the HMS website: https://www.hinghamschools.org/o/hms/page/chromebooks
***NOTE**** - If you purchased a plan last year, you must renew for this year. The plans offer coverage for only one year.

HMS Helpful Hints - Item Drop-offs
It happens to the best of us!
Your middle schooler gets to school and realizes they forgot something.
What do you do????
You can always drop off forgotten items in our lobby.
When dropping off a forgotten item, please leave it on the table outside of Officer Sullivan's office, labeled with the student's name.
If a student is not expecting the item, we will make every effort to contact the student to let them know that it's here.
Reporting Absences
Reminder: There are a couple of ways that you can report a student's absence, you can use whichever way is easiest for you. You can call the Middle School Phone Number, (781) 741-1550, and when prompted, you press 1 for the Absence Line. Or on the Hingham Middle School Homepage (on the top menu), there is an option to report an absence through this Attendance Form FORM.
It All Adds Up! - Math at the Middle School
Our 6th grade Math Enrichment students put their critical thinking and problem solving skills to work with two challenging puzzles! Students tackled the 2–9 Challenge, an around the room order of operations puzzle, and a factor tree puzzle that required them to use clues, logic, and their knowledge of prime numbers to determine where each number belonged. These activities gave students a chance to persevere, make connections, and think creatively about mathematics!
Math in Action!
Navigator students in Mrs. Duncan’s 6th Grade Math classes are up and moving while working on an Order of Operations Scavenger Hunt!
The Voyagers worked in small groups as part of the Building Thinking Classrooms initiative to practice the rules of divisibility. They also enjoyed learning about another division algorithm from a student who recently moved to Hingham from London.
Save the Date for Our Annual CyberSense Presentation!
