The Cs of the LMC

Schools may be closed, but the LMCs are open 24/7! Schools may be closed, but the LMCs are open 24/7!

Here is your open invitation to visit our district's Library Media Center webpages by clicking on their images. Once there, take your time looking around. You will discover many current ebooks & audiobooks, videos featuring authors & illustrators, and digital resources for research. Don't miss real links to virtual adventures, such as field trips, book displays, games, activities, and ways to stay in touch.

The sites are created and maintained by the school librarians. The sites are as unique as each school's character and the community they serve.

We are so glad you found your way to our libraries, the heart of our schools.

Our LMC Newsletters Open Lines of COMMUNICATION

Librarians publish newsletters designed to reach all members of their school community -- students, faculty, and families. Just like the websites, newsletters are produced digitally and as such, can take full advantage of presenting content in multi-media formats.

You may find yourself tapping your toes to lively music, grabbing a piece of paper to make an origami star, chuckling at a joke, or filling out an online form to get a West Orange Public Library Card.

We COLLABORATE! - Lesson Design & Delivery

Library lessons have the tall task of introducing and fine-tuning 21st Century Skills, creating lifelong learners and lovers of literature, as well as building strong relationships with each student.

Virtual lessons reflect everything we do on-site: provide time for social interaction using the chat, breakout rooms, and interactive games like Breakout.edu, creating collaborative stories, and sharing “something good” at the start of every class.

District librarians always look to collaborate with teachers and departments when designing and delivering lessons.

Students at St. Cloud Decorate LMC Google Classrooms!

zoom_out_map
"My first project this year was to invite students to "make their mark" for International Dot Day, September 15th. After reading Peter Reynold's book, "The Dot", I asked every student to create a digital dot in google slides and then I used the dots to decorate the Google Classroom headers for each grade. In that way, the students had the chance to decorate their classrooms. I was really impressed with their creations. Even kinders made digital dots!

Virtual Field Trip for Hazel Third Graders

"When we started remote learning in March, I participated in a webinar where Capstone presented how shared how students could their Pebble-Go online database research facts about the animals they will visit virtually at the San Diego Zoo. I was so excited to offer this online learning experience to Hazel's third graders. After adding in some cartographic skills to the lesson, we were off on a virtual airplane ride from Newark International Airport to San Diego International Airport. We explored some of the links as a class and the students were provided the slides to select one animal to explore on their own.

This field trip was a success and as a result, I created a virtual field trip to The Great Wall of China for one of our second-grade classes."

Indigenous People's Week Literature Exploration for Redwood's 3rd, 4th & 5th graders

"Many different people from many parts of the United States comprise the group of people called Native American. The lore is rich and diverse; some tales are humorous, others are serious. Some stories are about people who lived — or might have lived — long ago; others are about real children who you may know as a friend or neighbor today. Meet them all between the pages of the books recommended here."

Lori Boyd, LMS

Redwood Elementary

In conjunction with Black History Month, and the national NCTE African American Read-In campaign, West Orange High School over 450 students and staff from various English and Choral Music classes came together in the virtual library media center, on February 17 and 18th, to amplify black voices. The national Read-In was established in 1990, by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English, to make literacy a significant part of Black History Month.

Celebrating diversity and promoting literacy, the students read, recited, performed works by Black authors, poets, playwrights, and musicians at the fourth annual WOHS LMC event. Participants in each block listened to their peers read both classic and modern pieces by Langston Hughes, Maya Angelou, Amanda Gordon, Phyllis Wheatley, Trevor Noah, Jason Reynolds, just to name a few literary artists. Audience members were treated to individual musical performances by students and staff, videos of the WOHS Glee Choir and Concert Choir, and original student works as well.

LMC Orientations for Incoming Students

"You will find Bitmoji slides with interactive links to youtube videos of authors reading books, videos of actors creating audiobooks, Screencastify tours of webpages, and links to all ebook resources, including an original SORA video."

Windows, Sliding Doors, and Mirrors

“Books are sometimes windows, offering views of worlds that may be real or imagined, familiar or strange. These windows are also sliding glass doors, and readers have only to walk through in imagination to become part of whatever world has been created or recreated by the author. When lighting conditions are just right, however, a window can also be a mirror. Literature transforms human experience and reflects it back to us, and in that reflection, we can see our own lives and experiences as part of a larger human experience. Reading, then, becomes a means of self-affirmation, and readers often seek their mirrors in books.”

― Rudine Sims Bishop

Rudine Sims Bishop, professor emerita of education at The Ohio State University, has been called the “mother of multicultural literature”. She was inducted into the Reading Hall of Fame and received the International Reading Association’s Arbuthnot Award. In 2017, she received the Coretta Scott King-Virginia Hamilton Award for Lifetime Achievement.
