Attendance and Absences
DCPS is transitioning to a new system for tracking excused absences. Starting September 8th, parents and caregivers must submit excuse notes for attendance through Aspen GO—a mobile friendly version of Aspen Parent Portal, and the same platform used for school enrollment and reenrollment. Please visit the DCPS Attendance webpage for guidance on how to submit an excuse note.

English and Language Arts with Mr. Winston
Next week, our scholars will dive into Jason Reynolds’ short story “Skitter Hitter.” As we read, we will focus on how authors develop theme and how word choice shapes meaning and tone. Students will practice annotating closely for figurative language and analyzing the author’s craft through discussion and written response.
Later in the week, we will also continue building our writing stamina by practicing paragraph responses that use textual evidence effectively. These skills will help prepare students for our first Summative Assessment coming up soon.
I also want to thank you for the emails I’ve received regarding grades this —I will be working diligently over the next couple of days to respond to each one. I appreciate your patience and look forward to connecting with you.
As always, please continue encouraging your scholar to read for at least 20 minutes each night—consistent independent reading builds both confidence and fluency.
World Geography and Cultures with Ms. Wesselhoft
This week we learned about DC through an atlas scavenger hunt. Students did an amazing job analyzing thematic maps to identify trends throughout the city. This weekend, we are getting closer to home. Students will need to complete their Community Profile and create maps. Instructions are on the worksheet that was sent home.
Next week, students will use what they have learned about DC and their own communities to identify something they would like to improve in their communities. They will then end up crafting a Community Action Letter to a local representative to try to make change. The process should go:
Monday – Brainstorm
Tuesday – Who are they writing to?
Wednesday – Rough Draft
Thursday – Peer edit
Friday – Type or write final
Math with Mx. Gomez
Thank you so much for your continued patience as we worked through a few technical issues with the Pear platform. I’ve been monitoring things closely and appreciate your understanding!
Tutoring will be back to normal on Wednesday next week.
6th Grade Accelerated Math
Next week in math, students will be working on:
Dividing mixed numbers and solving word problems with fractions
Writing multiplication and division equations from real-world scenarios
Dividing decimals and whole numbers
Preparing for a mock test with review checkpoints to prepare students for their first assessment
7th Grade Math
If your student needs to Finish their Formative, they can come see me during Recess on Monday or After school on Tuesday!
We’ll begin next week by wrapping up Unit 2(First Unit this year) in 7th grade math. Students will then take their Summative Assessment and RCT (Required Curricular Task) later in the week to show what they’ve learned.
Please remind your child to:
Review notes and classwork
Ask questions during review time.

Earth and Space Science with Ms. Sagan
Hello Scientists,
Thank you for another great week! We finished up our Nature of Science unit with our Scientific Method Post-Test, and then we smiled bright for picture day. We closed the week out with our first foray into unit 1 - Plate Motion!
Next week, we will jump into learning about how the tectonic plates move. This will lead us into one of our most popular labs - the Milky Way Lab! For this lab, I would love donations of regular size Milky Way Bars (unfortunately the fun size ones are too small). After the Milky Way Lab we will continue our journey through density in order to understand how convection currents power the currents that move our plates.
Donation Request: Fun Size Milky Way Bars
Yes, you read that right, and no, your kid isn't lying to you! Next week we're playing with Milky Way bars! If you are able, please send your student in with a bag of fun-size Milky Way bars next week so we can demonstrate the breaking of crust and movement of magma at safe temperatures. This is the first of our food labs - the week of October 6th we're building with toothpicks and marshmallows, so get ready!
Roots!
This upcoming week's roots (Week 5) are:
Petro, petri = stone (think petrified, petroleum)
Pan = all (Greek) (think panorama, pandemic)
Super = over, above (think superposition, supreme, superb)
Ign = fire (think ignite, igneous)
Manu = hand (think manual, manuscript)
Keepers: uni, bi, tri, post, gen, poly, sub, hyper, pre, pyro, topo, seismo
Blookets
Throughout the year, I will post Blookets before every summative to help students study. Blooket is a platform that turns study flashcards into interactive mini-games in order to make studying fun! I highly recommend that students get a feel for the platform through the Roots Q1 Blooket that is posted under the Roots Q1 module. Please ensure that your students are clicking the correct link - there is a link that requires an account (for the overachievers who want to track points and collect the little icons) and a link that does not require an account (for the kids who just want to study). If your student is complaining that Blooket keeps asking them to sign in, then they're clicking the wrong link!
Notes from MLL Support
Last week we finished all of the BOY diagnostic tests – HMH placement test and BrainPop ELL placement tests. Students are placed in groups for stations based on their levels. On Mondays/Wednesdays/Fridays, students will rotate by groups to meet with their teacher and work on their READ 180 materials as well as working on Student Application on their devices. On Tuesdays/Thursdays, students will meet with the teacher by groups and work on iReady on their devices. The materials students are using are Code segment 1, 2, and comprehension books based on their levels.

Library Corner
Mr. Reichlen has created a new web collection of school and public library links to support the novel lists for independent reading texts from the CommonLit 360 ELA curriculum. Here students can find access points to all of the catalog records for recommended texts that support each of this year's unit themes organized by grade level and unit. Students can checkout and place items on hold. The collection will be updated throughout the school year to provide access to recommended titles as units change.
