Board and Administration Comments
Board President Gerald Pauling shared his appreciation for what it takes to make it through a school year as successfully as we have this year. He shared appreciation for the HFEO, the administrative team, teachers and staff who all show up everyday to get it right on behalf of our students.
Board Member Steve Anderson again reminded the community to get involved for common sense gun control in society.
Mr. Anderson shared information regarding young people's cell phone and social media use and connections to mental health and safety concerns. He is asking for further conversation.
Board Member Michelle Hoereth thanked automotive students who spoke during public comment with their thoughts about PE Waivers in such a professional manner. She asked Board President Pauling to outline the public comment guidelines to ensure students understand the process. Mr. Pauling shared that it is a public comment section to allow stakeholders the opportunity to share information, thoughts and ideas that can then be addressed by the administration or board moving forward. The Board wanted to be sure the students understood that it is not a dialogue, so the board was not directly responding to the topics raised but the administration will address their concerns.
Board Vice President Nate Legardy shared that the PE Waiver conversation has taken place through the Planning Committee over the past year. He applauded the automotive students for their activism. He also thanked staff, families and students for a phenomenal year and the great school climate at HF. It's a collective effort to make it this good.
Board Member Chris Riedel echoed the comments thanking the automotive students for having their voice heard in public comment. He also shared that the first steps in the Superintendent Search are taking place. The Alma Advisory Group held focus groups and interviews the past two days to gain insights into what the community is looking for in its next superintendent and its priorities for the future. There is also a survey all community members are invited to take. He went on to applaud the talent of our students and staff showcased in end-of-the-year events including Dean Cat Brown who sang with the jazz band.
Board Member Pam Jackson thanked the automotive students for providing context to the PE Waiver conversation which is greatly appreciated. She also shared that it's been a great year and congratulated seniors and their families.
3 Instructional Leaders Hired
The Homewood-Flossmoor High School Board of Education approved hiring three new instructional leaders at its meeting last night. They will begin in the 2024-25 school year.
Michelle Meadows, Director of Career Pathways and Workforce Development
Michelle Meadows joins HF as the new Director of Career Pathways and Workforce Development, bringing over 30 years of experience as an innovative educational leader. With an impressive background in strategic planning, career and technical education (CTE) program design, curriculum development, and forging industry partnerships, Michelle is uniquely qualified to spearhead our district's initiatives in preparing students for their future careers.
Two new Department Leads were also hired at last night’s Board meeting. Evan Roberts will lead the Science Department and Sharonda Kimbrough will lead the Social Science Department.
Evan Roberts, Science Department Lead
Evan Roberts is no stranger to the HF Science Department where he has taught, served as a Professional Learning Community lead for biology, and collaborated with his peers in the curriculum writing process for the past 11 years. He joined HF with six years of experience as a science teacher and one as a department chair in another district. His talents have shined as he’s led department conversations related to instructional practices and data analysis with a keen eye on student achievement. His experience building, leading and managing teams in the athletic arena informs his work in the academic arena as he empowers colleagues and students to continue to learn and grow.
Sharonda Kimbrough, Social Science Department Lead
Sharonda Kimbrough brings 21 years of experience as a teacher, interventionist and assistant principal to the Social Science Department. With an impressive background in reaching and teaching students with a variety of learning styles and needs, she brings extensive knowledge of data-centered decision-making, differentiated instruction, collaboration across disciplines and job embedded coaching to support teachers as they grow in the profession. Her commitment to academic achievement, fairness, respect and high expectations makes her an excellent fit for HF.
Charting a Course Strategic Plan Presentation
In the fall of 2023, Homewood-Flossmoor High School embarked on a journey to chart a course to guide the school through the 2028-29 school year.
An inclusive Strategic Planning Committee comprised of stakeholders who have a vested interest in HF’s students, school and community navigated the process with the needs and hopes of the local community at the center.
Working with Dr. Gregory C. Hutchings, Jr., founder and chief executive officer of Revolutionary ED, the team reviewed perception data from a comprehensive survey, focus group and interview process, as well as academic, social emotional, discipline and behavioral health data. In a series of meetings spanning from September to April, the committee conducted SWOT analysis of the data to identify areas of focus, theories of change, strategic planning goals and potential metrics.
The Strategic Plan
In this phase of the strategic plan process, the committee has identified Areas of Focus, Theories of Change and Strategic Plan Goals based on all of the data it analyzed throughout the school year. You can read more about those in the publication linked below.
Next Steps in Strategic Planning
The Board asked a series of questions that will be addressed at the upcoming Committee of the Whole meeting. Once the areas of focus, theories of change and goals are adopted by the Board, the administration will develop Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), Metrics and Action Plans to achieve the goals. That information will be brought to the Board at a future meeting.

Committee Reports
Finance Committee Meeting - Steve Anderson shared the committee report including several items on the agenda for action tonight including tractor purchase, technology budget process and presentation including $400,000 in savings through E-rate and an equity grant, website redesign recommendation, 2024-25 budget process overview, Athletico contract and Transportation Bid.
Planning Committee Meeting – Nate Legardy shared that at the committee meeting high school rankings was a large topic of discussion. The ranking is based on 2020-21 data and shows a downslide in ranking for HF. The administration saw this dip coming and has put into place measures to help address the concerns, especially related to SAT standardized testing and AP/IB test performance. The committee has asked for a 5-year data review to establish clear goals. He also shared that major efforts put into place over the past couple of years including detracking, Standard Based Learning, and strengthening Tier One instruction as well as articulation with partner school districts are efforts already being implemented to address these concerns and raise student achievement. Terrace Metrics behavioral health data was also discussed and plans to maximize the information gathered from the assessment and interventions that can address student concerns.
