PLEASE VOTE on March 12--Bond Referendum Program!
Florence Township schools need critical facility upgrades and repairs. On March 12, voters will have the opportunity to make a historic impact on the future of the community and our students. An approved two-question bond referendum would fund projects to meet the educational and extracurricular needs of each student, while also improving facilities for community use.
The total cost of both proposals is $24.1 million. Of the total $24.1 million proposed improvements, the state has verified that it would pay $8.8 million. This state aid reduces the local share to nearly $15.3 million.
Check out our website and follow us on Facebook and Twitter (@FTSD_) for more important referendum information and updates www.florence.k12.nj.us/referendum.

Debate Club
Our school’s charter Debate Team wrapped up its season on February 13 at Moorestown High School.
- The Varsity Team—Troy Donnelly, Mike Thompson, Anita Chacko, and Rajveer Kaur—completed their season with an impressive 4-10 record.
- The JV Team—Leuna Sen and Thomas Ulisse, arguing in the negative this season —completed a winning 3-1 season! In addition, Tommy and Leuna competed in the rotating JV match on February 13, which means that they competed at the varsity level. Not only did they win, but they won arguing for the affirmative for the first time this season. Furthermore, they were the ONLY Junior Varsity in the league to win their rotating Varsity match!
Our season would also not have been possible without our timers, Ayisha Nahar and Fabiha Usha. Georgia Moore acted as our researcher and JV judge.
The Debate Team will continue with meetings every Wednesday for the remainder of the school year. We actually have a lot of work to do in order to prepare for next year's season!
If you like to win arguments, consider joining the Debate Team! We compete in the South Jersey Debate League, and participation looks great on your resume. Meetings are in Room D110 on Wednesdays.

From the Desk of Mr. Lamaestra - Student Assistance Coordinator
Character is what you do when you think no one else is looking.
The development of GOOD CHARACTER is not an isolated skill to be taught in one area of a child’s life. It is an effort of home, school, and community to instill in our young people the value of. The development of good character touches our personal development for , it impacts our success with academic development in learning, and good character is essential in the workforce to be successful in our careers.
March Character Trait is Enthusiasm:
“Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.” --Ralph Waldo Emerson
Marijuana/Cannabis Information:
Marijuana/cannabis use is increasing among young people throughout the state. It’s very important to keep in mind that despite its social promotion and acceptance by the wider population--there are many concerns about the short and long term effects of its use on the teenage brain. Marijuana use is known to negatively impact a young person’s memory, especially short term memory, and motivation. It contributes to difficulty in managing stress, interferes with the development of emotional maturity and can cause anxiety disorders and other psychological disorders and make any psychological and/or psychiatric difficulty worse. It is far from harmless as is assumed by many.
Please take a few minutes to refresh your understanding of the known hazards of cannabis use and why young people need to avoid using it. The cannabis available today is not the same substance that was introduced into the popular culture in the 60’s. It’s many times more potent and has been subjected to hybridization and genetic manipulation.

Health Office News
As many of you already know, cold and flu season is upon us. The influenza season runs from October to May and peaks in January and February. Getting a flu shot may help cut down on the number of people that develop the flu. Having the shot may also make the disease less severe if contracted. Children are among the most vulnerable to the disease. Complete information about the flu and how to contain and manage it may be found at www.flu.gov and at www.cdc.gov/flu.
You are reminded to review the following suggestions and review them with your children as well:
Wash hands often with soap and water - #1 prevention method!!!
Avoid touching eyes, nose, or mouth
Avoid close contact with those who are already sick
Get plenty of sleep
Eat healthy food and drink plenty of fluids
Cover nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing with a tissue or the crook of your arm
Stay home if sick for at least 24 hours after fever has gone
PLEASE DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILDREN TO SCHOOL SICK!!!
Please DO NOT send medication to school with your child without a doctor’s note. Any medication, even cold medicine, eye drops, or any over-the-counter medication, must be accompanied by a doctor’s note or it can NOT be brought into school. This is per school policy, which can be found in the school handbook.
When you call your student out if he or she is absent, please include the symptoms your child is experiencing if they are sick. Please be specific. This information is valuable for the school nurse in tracking illnesses among the students.
Please do NOT send your child to school with a fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or a continuous cough. Students with fever, vomiting, or diarrhea MAY NOT return to school until they have gone 24 hours symptom-free without the use of medications. This is school policy and health department guidelines.
