GHS BACK TOSCHOOL INFOGRESHAM HIGH SCHOOL, AUGUST 18th, 2021

PRINCIPAL SHELTON'S MESSAGE

Dear Gopher Community,

On behalf of the staff of Gresham High School, I am pleased to welcome you and your students to the 2021-2022 school year! I’m looking forward to having students back in our hallways, classrooms and on campus five days a week; with a full day schedule! I’m looking forward to activities with our performing arts students and attending band and choir performances.

COVID mask mandates will be in effect for our campus before, during, and after school while on campus.

The Gresham-Barlow District office has been diligently working through safety guidelines that will be performed throughout the district. Here on the Gresham High campus, we will do our do-diligence in enforcing and adhering to the protocols listed in our return to school.

Please review the listed information below. There will be another parent newsletter in the coming weeks to update you on Safety, Return to School, Scheduling, and a host of other topics for you and your student.

As always be safe and we look forward to seeing you and your student in the coming weeks

Drake Shelton

PARENTVUE

ParentVue offers parents and guardians the ability to check their student’s attendance, assignments, grades and demographic information online. It is a very convenient method for keeping track of your student’s academic performance. Those who accessed this service last year should still have an active account. Incoming 8th graders that attended school in our district last year should also still have the same account. If you have not used this service in the past we encourage you to set up an account. To get an account just call the Main office to get your activation information. If you have an account already, but forgot the password, simply go to the login screen of Parentvue and click the forgot password link and the program will email you your login password.

Schedules will be on ParentVUE & StudentVUE

During the week of August, 30th student schedules will be available for viewing through the ParentVUE & StudentVUE accounts. For incoming freshmen, your accounts from Clear Creek & Dexter McCarty are still your accounts for high school. Please read below to learn how you can access counselors for schedule questions.

Schedule Changes

GHS strives to provide students with a relevant and engaging schedule of courses. Because course offerings are created out of students’ Spring forecasting selections, we prioritize the types of schedule changes we make in the Fall. GHS Counselors do not have space in August to respond to phone calls and emails regarding schedule changes.

If a student is requesting a general schedule change, please fill out the Schedule Change Request Form and requests will be addressed according to priority. https://forms.gle/drhufzeCmWPSm4cM9

Students & Caregivers are reminded of the following regarding schedule changes:

  • Our first priority is to serve students who have a missing period (hole) or have a “see counselor” note in their schedule. These students should come to the counseling office on Wednesday, September 8th and Thursday, September 9th during the class period that has the issue.

  • Schedule changes will be made to meet specific academic needs and/or to fulfill graduation requirements.

  • Some courses may not be available due to enrollment limitations and/or conflicts with other courses.

  • Changes to schedules will not be made simply to obtain a different teacher, rearrange class periods, or switch elective choices.

LUNCH - WHEN WILL IT BE IN MY SCHEDULE?

Gresham High conducts a split lunch model, which happens during 5th period. Students are broken into two lunch periods given the area of their 5th period class.

1st lunch- Students in the Learning Tower on the 2nd and 3rd floor

2nd lunch- Students on the 1st floor of the Learning Tower and within the North Athletic side of the building-Gym, Hall of Flags and Aquatic Center.

Once you can view your schedule in Studentvue, locate your 5th period class, depending on which floor your class is on will determine which lunch period you have.

STUDENT LOCKERS

With the remodel of Gresham High School, all of our student lockers are located just south of the Main Gym. There are a limited number of lockers available for students. Students will request a locker through an online request form. The link to this form will be sent to all families the week of August 30th. Once assigned, students will be able to view their locker number and combination in their Studentvue account. Skateboards shorter than 34" should fit in the lockers. Lockers will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.

P.E. UNIFORMS

If your student has a Physical Education course, they will be expected to dress appropriately for physical activity. Teachers will give students an overview of appropriate dress on the first days of school. We do not have PE uniforms, but can help find resources for students in need. Please contact your student’s counselor to be connected with these resources.

SUPPLY LISTS

Supply lists are not issued for the high school age student. In general, students will need a folder/binder, notebook paper and a writing utensil. Teachers will let students know if they need a specific supply item for their class. Office Depot donates 5% of your purchase back to Gresham High School. Use ID #70083769 when making purchases.

SCHOOL PICTURES

School pictures and ID card pictures for 9th grade will be taken during the 9th Grade Orientation Day on Tuesday, September 7th . All 9th, 10th, and 12th grade students will have their pictures taken on Thursday, Sept. 9th & Friday, Sept. 10th. Student’s pictures will be taken during their English class. All students (including seniors) are required to have an identification photo taken. The purchase of a photography package from Lifetouch Company is an individual family decision. Lifetouch has a website where you can order your school pictures online. CAL students will be allowed to get their pictures taken during their time here at GHS. CAL students just need to go to the Aux. Gym on Thursday or Friday.

Student Body Cards

An ASB Sticker saves money on school events!
Students can purchase an ASB Sticker for their Student ID Card for $20.00. This sticker will allow a GHS student free entrance to all HOME regular season athletic events as well as reduce the price of tickets to school dances. Please look for the option to purchase this item on your fee statement when your registration packet arrives.

Bus Information

Parents and students will be able to access their bus route number and stop as well as approximate time in the parentvue/studentvue portal. Please be sure to look for this information on the days just before school starts. For those families that will drop off their students please refer to the map below on how to access the student drop off zone.

ALL student drivers will need to register their car for parking on campus. For the 2021-22 GHS will not be charging a parking fee. All student drivers will be required to have current insurance for any vehicle they park on campus.

2021-22 SCHOOL CALENDAR 2021-22 SCHOOL CALENDAR

DRESS CODE

The responsibility for the attire of a student rests primarily with the student and their parents or guardians.

Our values are:

  • All students should be able to dress comfortably for school without fear of or actual unnecessary discipline or body shaming.

  • All students and staff should understand that they are responsible for managing their own personal ‘distractions’ without regulating individual students’ clothing/self-expression.

  • Teachers can focus on teaching without the additional and often uncomfortable burden of dress code enforcement.

  • Students should not face unnecessary barriers to school attendance.

  • Reasons for conflict and inconsistent discipline should be minimized whenever possible.

Our Goals of the Student Dress Code:

  • Maintain a safe learning environment in classes where protective or supportive clothing is needed.

  • Allow students to wear clothing of their choice that is comfortable

  • Allow students to wear clothing that expresses their self-identified gender.

  • Allow students to wear religious attire without fear of discipline or discrimination.

  • Prevents students from wearing clothing with offensive images or language, including profanity, hate speech, and pornography.

  • Prevent students from wearing clothing with images or language depicting or advocating violence or the use of alcohol or drugs.

  • Ensure that all students are treated equitably regardless of gender/gender identification, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, body type/size, religion, and personal style.

Allowable Attire

  • Students must wear shoes and clothing including both a top and a bottom or the equivalent.

  • Shirts and dresses must-have fabric in the front and on the sides.

  • Clothing must cover undergarments; waistbands and bra straps excluded.

  • Fabric must cover all genitalia, buttocks, and nipples. Clothing covering these areas must not be see-through.

  • Headwear must allow the face and ears to be visible and not interfere with the line of sight to any student or staff. Hoodies must allow the student’s face and ears to be visible to the staff.

  • Clothing and footwear must be suitable for all scheduled classroom activities including physical education, science labs, CTE shops and labs, and other activities where unique hazards exist.

  • Specialized courses may require specialized attire, such as sports uniforms or safety gear.

Non-allowable Attire

  • Clothing may not depict, advertise or advocate the use of alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, or other controlled substances.

  • Clothing may not depict pornography, nudity, or sexual acts.

  • Clothing may not depict violent acts, promote violence, or aggression.

  • Clothing may not depict Confederate flags, Nazi symbols, nooses, or hate speech targeting groups based on race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, religious affiliation, or any other protected group.

ATTENDANCE

GHS recognizes the importance of consistent attendance as a driver of student success. Accurate attendance records are also an important part of maintaining student and community safety. We look forward to partnering with parents and caregivers to support students as they rebuild the habits of attending school in person.

Please inform the GHS Attendance Office of a partial or full-day student absence as soon as possible. Parents/Caregivers may call the GHS Attendance line at 503-674-5519 to leave a message in English and Spanish. A student may also bring a written note from a parent/guardian or doctor to the attendance office. Students can visit the attendance office before school, during lunch, and after school.

GHS utilizes standard systems to inform parents/caregivers of student absences through automated phone messages and the ParentVue attendance screen.

ATHLETICS & ACTIVITIES

Fall sports started today (football, volleyball, cross country, soccer, water polo (starts later)). It is not too late to join a Fall Sports team. Athletic clearance is an online process. Please use this link to access the Athletic Clearance Information. Thanks to the Gresham-Barlow school district for their continued support for ALL students! All Athletics & Activities participation fees for the ‘21-’22 school year will be waived. This means all students wanting to participate on an athletic team or activity will have the student participation fee waived! We hope this support will increase the number of students participating in extracurricular activities. Families should be aware that there might be fees associated with sports or activities that include dues or uniform costs.
