Hello Miller Families!

It's hard to believe October is quickly passing by and next week is BOOK FAIR week at Miller Elementary! This short week brought up and down temps and reminded all of us that our weather is changing and the leaves are starting to fall. We will continue to go outside for outdoor recess so please start dressing your child to be outside with warmer clothes, jackets, hats and gloves when needed. This is also a perfect time to remind everyone to check the spare clothes in your child's backpack and to swap them out for warmer clothing.

Over the next two weeks, we are looking forward to meeting with families to discuss your child's progress at Parent Teacher Conferences. Your child's teacher has communicated ways to sign-up for a conference and we look forward to this time to share how your child is progressing socially, emotionally and academically in preschool or kindergarten! Our doors will be open in the evening hours, so come on in! As I shared, we have the Aurora High School National Honor Society here to help with childcare coverage during your conference time slot. You can walk your children down to the gym, sign them in and list what classroom you will be in. As a reminder, no snacks will be allowed in this area and our high school students will come find you if your child needs something immediately.

Finally, our Book Fair will be open conference nights, Tuesday, October 20th and Thursday October 22nd to shop for book fair books from 4:00-7:00 PM! You can stop in the book fair in our Library or Music room by accessing the ramp to our modular outdoor classrooms. Your child will be making a Wish List of books at their regular library time on Monday or Tuesday to make shopping much easier! If you cannot shop during our evening hours, you can send in money with your child and we will ensure they have a shopping time. We have found it to be a smoother process if families shop with their own child so you can be a part of the book selection!

Here's to a fun filled week ahead and we are looking forward to seeing many of you next week!

GO GREENMEN and GO GUARDS!

Kindly,

Maria Goodman

The Scholastic Book Fair is coming to Miller Elementary School next week! This is a great time to stock up on beloved books to promote the love of reading in your home and within our school building. All books purchased help the school earn Scholastic Dollars that can go right back into our school library and classroom libraries.

Here are some important reminders:

  • Children will preview the book titles and make a wish list during their Library Class time on Monday and Tuesday of next week.
  • You can shop before or after your conference time using your child's wish list. Or, if you are bringing them to conferences and using our free child care service, you can shop with your child.
  • There are NO CLASS SHOPPING TIMES at Miller - The PTO has provided a QR code for an Ewallet. This is ONLY necessary if you cannot shop with your child during conferences. We will find time to help your child shop if needed.

Parent Teacher Conferences Parent Teacher Conferences

It is hard to believe how quickly the beginning months of the year are passing by! Each fall, we spend time connecting with families either with a parent-teacher conference or parent-school team meeting. Conferences will be offered on Tuesday, October 20th and Thursday, October 22nd. There may be some additional days and times and your child's teacher will communicate more specific information. We are very excited to meet with each of you to share all of the successes your child has experienced since starting preschool or kindergarten and what we have in store for the months ahead!

  • Conferences will be held at school with your child’s teacher, but if that does not work for your family schedule, you can discuss other options with your child's teacher such as a phone conference or virtual meeting.
  • We also will have a drop in babysitting service from our High School National Honor Society during your scheduled conference time. You will sign your children in and provide a phone number if they need to connect with you.

We are lucky here at Miller Elementary to have two amazing custodians, Mr. Jimmy and Mr. Anthony. You may hear a lot about Mr. Jimmy or Mr. Anthony because they are very important people in our school! They often are some of the first faces children see when they enter our building off our school buses. Both Mr. Jimmy and Mr. Anthony are supporting students and staff to ensure our building is safe, clean, and well maintained each day. We appreciate them so much and we enjoyed celebrating them this past week for National School Custodian Day!

Fall Festival Guidelines Fall Festival Guidelines

This year, we want to celebrate the fall season with our students as well as enjoy the traditions of dressing up in costumes for a costume parade. We want to share some of the guidelines that we will be implementing for our Fall Parties and Costume Parade so you can plan accordingly.

Preschool Fall Festival Costume Parade: Any Family Member Can Attend

  • Thursday, October 29th: AM Classes 11:00 and PM Classes 2:45

Kindergarten Fall Festival Costume Parade: All Family Members Can Attend

  • Friday, October 30th: AM 1/2 Day Kindergarten 11:00 and Full Day Classes 2:45

Fall Festival Party Times for Volunteers who have signed up with PTO:

Preschool (AM 10:15-11:00 or PM 2:00-2:45)

Kindergarten (AM Half Day 10:15-11:00 or PM Half Day/Full Day 2:00-2:45)

Volunteers may arrive 10 minutes before party times! Thank you!

  • At Miller, we are asking that your child brings their costume to school in a bag and they will change before our party times. If your child needs to wear a portion of their costume (specific pants, leggings, or shirt) throughout the day, that is perfectly OK. Please advise that costumes need to be functional, school safe, no weapons can accompany a costume, and no full face coverings.
  • We will be working with our PTO headroom parents to plan fun games or activities, and specific visitors will be allowed into our school for the Fall Festival Party. All visitors will be checking in and no other siblings or guests will be able to attend. Thank you for your cooperation.
  • We will have a weather-permitting outdoor costume parade where you can come up to the school and view all your wonderful children! A specific map can be found below and you can expect it to start at 11:00 for AM Preschool/AM Kindergarten classes and 2:45 for PM Preschool and Full Day Kindergarten classes. If the weather conditions are poor, the outdoor parade will be canceled and we will not hold an indoor event.
  • The PTO will be supplying a treat for our party and more information about the snack will be forthcoming.

Please advise that our costume guidelines may be different from the other buildings. Our children will not be wearing their costumes all day due to some challenges with restroom breaks throughout the day. We have learned from past experience that many costumes zip and snap in the back and children cannot manage this in the restroom independently. Thank you for your understanding and support!

Teaching School Expectations Teaching School Expectations

We have finished explicitly teaching all 6 of our school wide PBIS expectations! These skills have been taught and practiced during the first 6 weeks of the school year so that your children can become responsible, respectful, and problem solvers throughout their school day. It's important to remember that many of these skills will need continued practice and repetition so that they become more automatic. We will continue to take notice of areas of strength and areas we need to practice throughout our school day. Here is a reminder of the big ideas that we have been working on.

  • I can have a safe body!
  • I am ready to learn!
  • I can try first, then ask for help!
  • I can stop, think and make a good choice!
  • I can be a good friend and use kind words!
  • I can share, take turns and wait!

We will continue to earn Greenmen Poms and celebrate our great choices! As soon as we fill up our classroom buckets and school wide buckets, we will enjoy some fun rewards! There will be times when we need to review a skill and reteach the expected behavior. We feel these are teachable moments and take time to stop and review them with your children. If you see a "We solved a problem or Reflection Sheet" come home, this is one way we communicate with you to review the same skill at home. We might include a small note, a social story, or some tips to help ensure children are learning appropriate school choices. Please let us know if you need any support at home reinforcing any of these skills across other settings.

Updates From our School Counselor - Mrs. Ambrosia Updates From our School Counselor - Mrs. Ambrosia

Hello Miller Families,

Kindergarten students have been busy learning about the role of a school counselor, our Buddy Bench located on the playground, and how to ensure they are being safe, having fun, and being kind at recess!

The Buddy Bench is a place where any Kindergartener can go if they need a friend to play with or if they’d like to find a friend to play with. We read the book, The Buddy Bench, by Patty Brozo to learn more about this concept.

During recess, your students are working on taking turns and finding activities to do that make their heart happy. It has been nice to watch some students become experts at hopscotch and tic-tac-toe this week! Others have already known from the start that they’re great at bug catching, dancing and bubbles!

Please reach out to me at any time if I can help your student(s) in any way.

Warmly,
Mrs. Lindsey Ambrosia
School Counselor

DAF Day was this past week!

A Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) is a charitable investment account that allows you to personally make a tax-deductible contribution, grow those assets tax-free, and recommend donations to your favorite charities over time.

The Leighton Amphitheater Outdoor Classroom is just one example of what community generosity can make possible for Aurora students.

Have a DAF? Consider recommending a grant to the Aurora Schools Foundation and help fund more innovative and imaginative student opportunities.
