Squabble Up
Dear Ross Community,
A pigeon made a nest on our window sill a few weeks ago, and proceeded to lay two eggs. We have had our very own Squab Cam going, as we all check regularly for any movement. About five days ago, the first egg hatched, to everyone's absolute delight. There was yelling, there was fanfare. Oh, Roadrunners, he was so fluffy. It was then that the David Attenborough documentary of Dupont Circle began (this is safe for work, but barely): we noticed with alarm that said fluffball was quickly, very, and quite missing. My brain overfull with Tooth Fairy, Easter Bunny, and mythical creature stories, I mustered: "The squab must have learned how to fly very early..." It was the best I could do, but we had our saving grace: there were two eggs and one remained, a little time bomb of fluff. Yesterday morning before school, the second egg hatched: a new fluffball had arrived! Terror in my heart as I returned from school dropoff, I checked--Fluffy Fluffs was still there! I looked that mom pigeon in the eye, gave her one stern finger, and said "do not mess this up." We've got children's mental health riding on Fluffy Fluffs, people. As of the writing of this newsletter, he is still there, but I hope he sleeps with one eye open.
In this week's edition, we have a final update on our highly successful Book Drive, a call for nominations for the PTA Executive Board as well as the LSAT, a search for a few volunteers, and a detailed summary of Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week which starts on Monday! Have a great week and so many thanks to Kathy Crutcher and all the Book Drive volunteers for making this year's drive such a success. Bravo!

LSAT Elections
Seeking Nominations: Ross Elementary School LSAT Parent/Guardian (SY25-26)
The Ross Local School Advisory Team (LSAT) is currently seeking nominations for parents/guardians of current Ross Elementary School students to serve in school year 2025-2026.
The LSAT is a group of parents/guardians, teachers, non-instructional staff members, community members, and occasionally students who meet monthly to advise the principal on school priorities. A diversity of perspectives and experiences is important to a successful LSAT experience, as we want to make sure our school leaders hear from a variety of voices that are representative of the overall school community.
Parents/Guardians will nominate and then vote on 4 representatives. You may nominate as many individuals as you would like, as well as self-nominate, but please try to confirm others' interest in advance. Nominations and elections for the teachers and non-instructional staff members are handled by the union representatives. Community members and student representatives are asked to join by consensus once the other LSAT members are determined. The nomination form is available here.
Ross Elementary School's nomination period will be from May 6, 2025, to May 27, 2025. Afterward, we will share additional communication detailing how to vote. Thank you!
ISO Volunteers
The PTA is in search of a Ross parent or parents to coordinate Ross family and staff participation in the Capital Pride Parade on Saturday, June 7. Each year, Ross marches in the parade with the DCPS group. Organizing doesn't take a lot of time--and this is often one of the highlights on the Ross calendar. Contact PTApresident@rosselementary.org if you're interested in volunteering.
We are ISO a parent to take over the game library for the coming school year. If you are interested in helping out, please reach out to PTApresident@rosselementary.org.
Date Change: Term 4 Learning Celebration
Please note that the Term 4 Learning Celebration has been rescheduled to the morning of Thursday, June 12, due to that Friday's 5th grade promotion. Please mark the change on your calendars!
School Events
Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week: May 12-16
Although many celebrate teacher/staff appreciation this week, because of school conflicts, Ross is celebrating Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week May 12-16. The Ross PTA is coordinating a number of activities to celebrate our 36 remarkable teachers and staff. You can find an overview of these activities below. Here’s where we need your help:
On Tuesday, May 13, if possible, each student should bring about six single flowers before school to leave in vases for teachers and Ross staff on the picnic tables outside the school. Students should find the vases for each of their classroom teachers and add a stem to their vases, as well as find the vases of a few other teachers and staff who have made a difference in their lives. Please spread the love! During school on Tuesday, the PTA will arrange each of these vases and deliver them to teachers and staff.
Are you available to help organize a banner that kids will sign? Or do you have some time on Tuesday, May 13 (8-9am) to help coordinate the flower distribution? Contact ptapresident@rosselementary.org.
Do you have other ideas for how we could help teachers and staff feel special? Contact ptapresident@rosselementary.org.
You are also welcome to bring a small treat (remember: no nuts, please!) or card to any teacher or staff during the course of the week.
Activities for the week:
On Monday, May 12, the PTA will provide a catered breakfast for teachers and staff, and will organize a thank-you banner for students and parents to sign.
On Tuesday, May 13, students will bring in flowers for their classroom teachers and for a few staff whom the PTA assigns to their class.
On Wednesday, May 14, Principal Searl will host a happy hour for teachers and staff, in part with PTA resources.
On Thursday, May 15, teachers and staff will receive gift cards for neighborhood treats.
On Friday, May 16, the PTA will provide a catered lunch for teachers and staff, and offer teachers and staff reduced prices on Ross swag.
Thank you! Questions? Contact ptapresident@rosselementary.org.

Azalea Blooms at the US National Arboretum
From KidFriendly DC:
"There's a glorious flower bloom in DC right now: The azaleas at the National Aboretum are peaking...Not only is it a beautiful showcase of the many varieties of the flower that grow there, it's fun to hike the trails around Mount Hamilton, where the collection in located. Get a glimpse of it here (and a past bloom here). Of course, the rest of the Aboretum is always great to explore. A few features kids will especially love: The Washington Youth Garden, the Asian Collection with its “secret” path leading down to the Anacostia River, the stream in Fern Valley where it’s fun to look for frogs, the gazebo in the Conifer collection, and the fountain full of koi fish by the Visitors Center. Read more about the Arboretum here, here, and here."
