Parents, we are coming up on testing season! All teachers have been working hard to review content with students in preparation for:
- End of Year (EOY) Acadience Benchmarks for Reading, Math, and Writing (window is May 6-20)
- RISE Summative for Math and Reading, Grades 3-5 (window is April 29-May 20)
- RISE Summative for Science, Grades 4-6 (window is April 29-May 20)
- SEL End of Year survey, Grades 1-5 (April 27-May 1)
Here are some things parents might consider to help their students be ready for testing:
1. Focus on Consistent Routines. Kids perform best when they’re well-rested and feel normal.
- Keep a regular bedtime (especially the week of testing)
- Make sure they eat breakfast each day
- Arrive at school on time and calm, not rushed
2. Encourage Daily Reading (Biggest Impact)
- Have students read 15–20 minutes daily
- Ask simple questions:
- “What was this about?”
- “What was the main idea?”
- For younger students: read with them and practice fluency
3. Build Confidence, Not Pressure. Avoid making tests feel scary or high-stakes.
- Say things like:
- “Just try your best.”
- “Show what you’ve learned.”
- Celebrate effort, not just results
4. Light Skill Practice (Short & Simple) Instead of long study sessions:
- Practice math facts (flashcards, apps, quick games)
- Do short writing prompts (“Write 3–5 sentences about your day”)
- Review homework or classwork—not new, unfamiliar material
5. Talk About the Tests in a Positive Way.
- Let them know it’s okay if it feels quick—just keep trying
- Explain that teachers use this to help them grow, not to “judge” them
6. Teach Simple Test-Taking Habits
- Take your time and read directions carefully
- If stuck, try your best and move on
- Check answers if there’s time
7. Limit Stress & Distractions
- Keep evenings before testing low-key
- Limit late-night screen time
- Avoid overloading schedules during testing weeks
8. Reassure Them They’re More Than a Score
- Remind kids:
- “This is just one way to show your learning.”
- “We’re proud of you no matter what.”
- "Simplemente haz tu mejor esfuerzo".
- "Demuestra lo que has aprendido".
- Celebre el esfuerzo, no solo los resultados.
- Si te quedas atascado, haz tu mejor esfuerzo y continúa.
- Revisa tus respuestas si te sobra tiempo.
