CARVING OUT LEARNING IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE CARVING OUT LEARNING IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE

This week in Criminal Justice, we reviewed the 15 steps of the Formal Criminal Justice Process. Normally, students design posters of the stages; however, this year, one student requested pumpkin carving, so that's what they did! Each pumpkin has a cutout of a graphic depicting the Formal Stage. On the back of the pumpkin, the stage is written. Students had fun, and we had great discussions about the stages while they worked.

INSIDE CIVES STEEL: BATH TECH WELDERS SEE INDUSTRY IN ACTION INSIDE CIVES STEEL: BATH TECH WELDERS SEE INDUSTRY IN ACTION

Picture stepping into a world where steel beams fly, and massive structures take shape - that’s exactly what PM Bath Tech Welding students experienced during their recent tour of Cives Steel in Augusta. Cives Steel is a structural steel and plate fabrication company that operates with about 105 employees.

Ever wonder where those huge steel beams in bridges come from or where the beams for industrial buildings are built? You’ve probably seen many of the structural designs that are fabricated at Cives Steel and not realized that the structural components are fabricated in our very own state. Some of their noteworthy buildings are Gillette Stadium's North Endzone addition, Maine Medical Center’s Congress Street addition, and Boston’s Children’s Hospital. They ship across the country and process about 200 tons of steel a week.

During the tour, students went behind the scenes to observe how massive projects are organized, cut, welded, and transported. It was difficult to hear our tour guide while in the shop as steel was being banged around, grinders were grinding, and industrial fans were blowing to keep the air circulating for air quality.

Beyond technical operations, students heard about real-world career paths. Seeing young professionals actively running equipment and welding proved that students can launch high-paying careers, earn great benefits, and master in- demand skills straight out of high school.

ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETINGS AT BATH TECH ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETINGS AT BATH TECH

A “Program Advisory Committee” (PAC) is a group that meets at least once a year to review the status of a CTE program, verifying that its curriculum, instruction, assessment, and equipment are up to date and representative of industry practices and needs. Each PAC must include the program teacher, past students, secondary constituents, postsecondary constituents, business and industry partners, and other interested or concerned stakeholders. Bath Tech held its meetings and dinner on Thursday night. Over 80 people attended, and Culinary Arts catered the meal. We would like to thank everyone who attended, and we extend a special thank you to the Culinary Arts Chef Tamburo, Chef Robicheaw, and the students who made the wonderful meal possible.
