Moving Day - Volunteers Needed
As the year draws to a close, MOVING DAY is upon us! This is the time just after school (12:30) on Friday, June 6th, when we gather as a community to help clean out the classrooms and move our students into their new space for next year! It takes MANY hands, but can be a satisfying way to close out the year. Please join us! Pizza will be provided for all helpers!
Field Day - Friday, June 6
Thanks to Ms. Glatte and her hours of organization and work, we will be hosting all the children for a late morning of games and outdoor fun at Clay Street Park on Friday, June 6, during school hours.
We do need your help! If you would like to help out with this special day please click the link below and sign up for a spot. It’s outdoors (bring hats and sunscreen) and wet (clothes that work for water) and an amazing amount of fun.
Please note, Kindergarten will not participate in the whole school event, but will have their own outdoor fun.

Sunrise Class - 2nd Grade
This past Friday the second grade took an afternoon trip to my property and garden. We celebrated our near-completion of the school year with nibbles from the garden, plenty of trees to climb, fuzzy animals, and a gloriously sunny day! The class also heard their class name for the first time, a secret I have held dear since part-way through their first grade year.
Since day one this group has been notable for the joy and enthusiasm with which they approach the day. Full of heart, they often seem a group twice their size, and the room is always full of ready helpers. They are driven, hard workers, with a powerful one-voice and incredible amounts of joy, light, and strength. Because of their warmth and power they are the Sunrise Class! I am so grateful for having had the privilege of guiding their journey through second grade, and I am so immensely proud of all they have accomplished this year! Blessings on our school!

Our community classifieds are posted as a service to our Siskiyou School families and our broader community. If you would like to include something in the classifieds, email your text (a few lines in length) or an image file (png or jpg only), to kristin.beers@siskiyouschool.org no later than Monday by 3:00 pm. We may edit it for space purposes. Classifieds are included for two weeks, require a break for a week, and then can be renewed upon request.
Chess Club Finale
Happy Tuesday everyone. This Friday (May 30th) we will wrap up our final session of Chess Club for the year. The focus for a majority of the students this third session has been the Annual Siskiyou School Chess Tournament. Each week, in addition to the regular puzzles and end game scenario practice, the children play one or two tournament games. In a regular tournament, a participant usually plays about five or six games, with a win counting as 1 point and a draw 1/2; most points wins. Or, they have a chance to play every other player one time (we didn't have enough time for this).
Sometimes (and this is the case here), there is unequal number of games played by each student. This was mostly due to the fact that we don't use chess clocks and some students rush through their games, while others play very languidly and leisurely. I had originally planned to cap the number of games so everyone would have the exact same amount. Though as we went on, I didn't want so many sitting idly and waiting all class for others to finish (and not just playing the same players over and over).
In lieu of a rating system, which none of these students have, which would 'weigh' and give a value to each win based on opponent strength, we will be using the Points Per Game or Percentage Score. This is the total points divided by number of games played (Ex. Player A has 5 points in 7 games - .714 PPG, versus Player B having 6 points in 9 games - .667 PPG. Player A ranks higher). I'm explaining all of this in case your child comes home with some confusion about the final results, as it is different than the total points version we have used in the past.
Kudos to all of the students ahead of time. They have all played their best games of the year these last few weeks. They have gotten to play students who they don't usually pair up with; some of them at a much higher skill level than they are. They have really grown in their abilities. And they have all displayed really great attitudes and sportsmanship, even when the games don't go their way. I think that is really one of the most important aspects of having these tournaments, and one of the pieces I most want to see.
More on the final results next week. Thank you, Mr. Monda.
Ohana Family Resources
Dear Friends and Community,
Ohana Family Resources has been offered a very generous matching fund community grant if we can generate support to meet it.
The grant needs to see crowdfunding support from people who know and trust the work we are doing with children in our community.
If we can raise the money to match the grant, the funds will support children and families in the following way for the upcoming 2025/2026 school year:
*All parent education support talks will be offered free of charge.
*No child/family will be turned away due to lack of finances.
*We will be able to offer in-service trainings to teachers in our community for no cost (the local schools have lost funding for teacher support)
*We can fund our Lunch Bunch Program (mentors meeting with teens at lunch who need support on a weekly basis for teens who are chosing sobriety)
*Our collaboration with a care farm in Talent to offer outdoor farming/meaningful projects/mentoring programs to children can begin.
This is such an exciting opportunity to grow healthy support for children in our community.
Thank you for offering any amount. Even $1 counts you in as acknowleging that Ohana Family Resources is a support to the community. The grant donor would like to see broad base support, so your lighting a candle makes a difference!
With deepest gratitude for being the change we wish to see,
Nina
