Principal Corner

Hello AES families,

Happy New Year! This year has been one of my favorite ways to ring in the New Year with our school wide event. The Winter Feast was truly a success. It would not have been possible without the village of student, staff, family and community volunteers who helped prepare, cook, entertain and clean up. The event included serving over 200 people, cooking 14 turkeys, 200 lbs of potatoes and many, many baked goods. Over 40 volunteers helped prepare food or help with the event, Student made placemats, set tables and helped to cook, serve and clean. Middle school students came to lead us in a winter song sing-a-long and the smiles throughout AES truly lit up the school. The event captured the essence of our community and I look forward to our next community wide event.

It was wonderful to see so many families at the Winter Sing-A-Long! The children were so excited to share their songs and we look forward to having more music and art exhibitions in the future.

Thank you to the Antrim's James A Tuttle Library for hosting the Festival of Trees and welcoming each class prior to break to view the trees and decorations. Students were excited to see the display others created and their own classroom trees displayed throughout the space. It brought smiles to all.

The next PTO meeting is this Tuesday, January 9th, at 3:45PM. Please join us if you are able.

Please join us for the Title I sponsored Community Engagement Night Cooks and Books on Wednesday, January 24th, 5:30 - 7:00. Where we will share a meal together that the students cook. All of the recipes will be based on the books they are reading together in class. In the newsletter below you will find a link to the RSVP form. Please let us know if you are coming to the event.

Be well,

Beth

What's Happening in Class? What's Happening in Class?

Preschool Preschool

First Friends 1 have been learning more about animals in winter and how evergreen trees help wild animals. Our four year olds took a woods walk to collect fallen pine branches and cones for a painting project. We are excited for lots of snow fun next week!

Wellness Wellness

Dear Students and Families,

As I am sure your students have shared with you, I will not be returning to AES after the holiday vacation. I have accepted a full-time position at my second job, and will start there after new years.

This new job came to me when I was least expecting it, and it’s an opportunity I cannot pass up. It has been one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make because I love our students and AES and I will miss everyone immensely. Thank you all for welcoming me back to this community with open arms. I am sorry to leave so soon.

Sincerely,

Ms. Paige

In Kindergarten, we filled the first week back from vacation with fun! It has been a busy first week back in Ms. Lawler’s Kindergarten class. We have been having fun learning, seeing our friends again and playing. This week we went on a sight word scavenger hunt in our Library books! So far this year we’ve learned 20 sight words and it’s exciting when we find them places. We also used gems to explore area. Students covered up different shapes, including their handprints and determined which shapes had the largest and smallest area.

In Ms. Dibble’s class. We have enjoyed getting to see our friends again! We started learning how to write lowercase letters and are doing so well with it. The students have been working so hard, learning so much, and having fun!

First Grade First Grade

HAPPY NEW YEAR from Grade 1! Students have been busy learning about Place Value in math using decks of cards, place value mats and foam place value tens and ones. Learning new math concepts is fun, especially when you can do it with a partner! Mrs. Sullivan’s class is focusing on our last long vowel u_e and in math we were detectives, finding a missing addend! We also learned about the Mexican holiday, Las Posadas, created poinsettias and wrote about our favorite holiday decoration.

Second Grade Second Grade

This week, second grade began learning about our government. We learned about key vocabulary words like citizen, rights, and symbols by creating a booklet to hold their definitions. Then, we learned about key American symbols and monuments that are located across the country. Great job second grade!

Happy New Year!

This week fourth graders worked on their songs for the district wide concert on March 19th. This concert will include grades 4-12. Our fourth graders are learning two songs: one to sing with everyone at the concert and one for them to sing as just an AES group. More information is coming soon!

Kindergarten learned how to make an alligator out of the letter A in art class!

Third Grade Third Grade

This week third graders had a special visit from the Antrim Grange. Each student was given a dictionary and learned about what the Grange does for our community. We’re very excited to start using our dictionaries this year. Thank you, Antrim Grange!

Fourth Grade Fourth Grade

This week fourth graders have been analyzing maps to identify physical and human features. We started the week by generating a list of words we can use to describe our location (Earth, North America, USA, New England, New Hampshire, Antrim, AES, etc.). Next we used Google Earth to have a bird’s eye view of where we are on various maps. Each map we looked at zoomed in allowing us to see more detailed features of the area that we call home. We shared our learning at Friday’s Community Meeting!

Note from Ms Gregg, School Counselor

Happy New Year! Recent kindergarten, first grade, second grade and third grade classroom counseling lessons have focused on empathy and kindness. Fourth graders have been learning about the importance of understanding different points of view and the fact that different people have different perspectives. Lessons generally begin with a brief “brain builder” activity designed to help students strengthen their skills of observation, focusing, remembering, following directions, and waiting/patience.
