December 2019 December 2019

From Our Principal Mr. Beeck

Dear Loess Hills Students and Families,

First of all, thank you to everyone for continuing to drive safely during morning drop off and at dismissal time. When everyone takes their turn and is cordial to each other, our traffic moves along more quickly. Please remember to park in the parking lot and only use the fire lane for quickly dripping off and picking up students.

Secondly, I want to remind everyone to become involved in our "Hour of Code" activities which will happen during Computer Science Education Week of December 9-13. "Hour of Code" is one way to show that Loess Hills is doing a great job of teaching foundational 21st century technology skills. I encourage you to share the news on our social media channels about the cool things your children are doing in technology and HOUR OF CODE. December 9-13 is also known worldwide as "Computer Science Education Week." Loess Hills elementary school will be participating in this event with activities going on in each classroom. Calendar of Kindness

Mrs. Walter's kindergarten class created a Calendar of Kindness for December. The students came up with ideas on how they could be kind to others. Here are some of the great things they came up with. Everyone is encouraged to participate! :)

Vision Screenings

Kindergarten and third grade students had their vision screenings done during the first week of December. Referral letters will be sent home in January.

Cancer Center Care Packages

During November, Loess Hills students and staff collected items for the June E. Nylen Cancer Center and created care packages for their patients who are undergoing treatment for various types of cancer. Thank you so much to all who donated to this wonderful cause!!

Communication and Preparedness

Student and staff safety is of paramount importance in the Sioux City Community School District. For this reason, the District exercises a host of crisis prevention and planning tactics. Should an emergency occur, the school notifies you through our Blackboard phone system. In an emergency, the system calls every phone number associated with your child in order to reach you. The message will give you details about the emergency and provide directions on when/where to pick up your child if the normal school day is altered. Learn more about school safety.

Focus 2022 Strategic Plan

The Sioux City Community School District Board of Directors spent time developing, with the input of multiple stakeholder groups, the “Definition of the Well-Educated Student.” The definition is the foundation for the Focus 2022 Strategic Plan. The definition identifies what students within the educational system will be able to do upon graduating from our district. Learn about the five goal areas of the strategic plan.
