Stratford High Times

From the Principal's Desk
Kia ora koutou,
A Focus on Excellence
It has been a busy and productive term at Stratford High School. Our recent Variety Concert was a highlight, showcasing the incredible talent, confidence, and creativity of our students. Events like this do not happen without a huge amount of commitment, and I would like to acknowledge the efforts of both our students and staff who contributed to making the evening such a success.
As we move into the second half of the year, it is important that students remain focused, committed, and purposeful in their learning. The habits and choices made over the next two terms will have a direct impact on the results students achieve at the end of the year - this is where Excellence is demonstrated.
At a recent assembly, I spoke with students about what Excellence really means. It is not about natural talent or being “smart”; rather, it is the result of effort, discipline, and attitude. Excellence comes from the decisions young people make each day - persevering when learning becomes challenging, asking for help when needed, and taking pride in the quality of their work.
Importantly, Excellence is not reserved for a select few. It is something that is available to every student who is prepared to commit, use their time well, and take responsibility for their learning. These are the qualities that lead not only to academic success, but also to success beyond school.
Alongside this, we have recently placed an increased focus on uniform and presentation. While there has been some understandable pushback, as is natural when expectations are reinforced, this remains an important part of our role as educators. As a school, we have a responsibility to help young people understand the importance of standards, presentation, and professionalism. These are life skills that will serve them well in future pathways, whether in further education, training, or employment.
Our vision of developing well-rounded young people ready to excel in the world extends beyond the classroom. It includes how students present themselves, how they approach their learning, and how they interact with others. As I shared in the assembly, true excellence is not just about achievement; it is about combining high-quality work with strong character and respect for others.
We appreciate the ongoing support of our whānau as we continue to reinforce these expectations. Together, we can ensure that our students develop the habits, attitudes, and standards that will enable them to succeed, both at school and beyond.
Ngā mihi nui,
Cam Stone

Ostyn Marriner - Rāwhiti Ihaka – Kōrero Tākatu
A huge congratulations to Ostyn, who proudly represented Stratford High School in the Year 9 Te Reo Māori speech section. Ostyn is the first Year 9 Te Reo Māori speaker in over five years to represent our kura at Manu Kōrero – a fantastic achievement and one we are incredibly proud of.
The day provided an inspiring opportunity for our students to experience te reo Māori at its highest level, listening to passionate speakers share their whakaaro, stories, and perspectives with confidence and pride.
Students also had the privilege of watching the English speech sections, where speakers addressed important issues affecting Māori today. It was a valuable learning experience that encouraged critical thinking, strengthened cultural understanding, and celebrated the power of language.
Ka mau te wehi, Ostyn! Thank you for representing Stratford High School with courage, determination, and mana. We are proud of you and look forward to seeing what the future holds.
YES Business Success
Sixty-four teams from across the region recently pitched their business ideas to the Young Enterprise Scheme (YES) judges, and we are proud to celebrate the success of several Stratford High School teams.
Congratulations to all students in our Commerce class who participated. From developing innovative business concepts to confidently presenting their ideas, they demonstrated outstanding creativity, entrepreneurship, and professionalism throughout the competition.
We are thrilled to see their hard work recognised and look forward to following their future achievements. Well done to everyone involved!
Year 9 Update
It is hard to believe that our Year 9 students are already halfway through their first year at Stratford High School. They have grown so much in confidence since the start of the year, and it has been wonderful to watch them settle into high school life.
With the end of Week 10 fast approaching, our students will be getting ready for a semester change. They will spend the final week of term in their new option classes, giving them the chance to meet new teachers, try something different, and hopefully make new connections with peers they may not have spent much time with so far. It is always an exciting time, and I hope they enjoy the change of timetable and the new opportunities it brings.
It has also been fantastic to see so many Year 9 students getting involved in TSSSA events this term. As I write this, we have students out representing Stratford High School at pickleball and darts. How cool is that! It is great to see so many of our young people making the most of the wide range of opportunities our school has to offer.
I have included some photos from our Year 9 Fabric class this term. They are a fantastic group of students, and it has been a real pleasure to see their creativity and confidence grow as the semester has progressed.
We are incredibly proud of how far this cohort has come already and are looking forward to seeing what they achieve in the second half of the year.

Year 13 English & Biology Trip
Recently, the Year 13 English and Biology classes went on a hikoi to the capital. It was a wonderful time, full of fun and adventure. However, it wouldn't have been possible without our awesome sponsors who helped us out in fundraising so we were able to lower the costs, and make the trip more affordable.
A special thank you to Jomarc Ltd and New World Stratford for their contribution to our raffles.
We would also like to thank everyone who donated in some way. We couldn't have done the trip without all the support and help.
Fabric Technology – The Design Journey
As Semester 1 comes to an end, it has been wonderful to see students wrapping up their passion projects and reflecting on just how far they have come.
In Fabric Technology, students follow a full design process, not a set pattern. They learn to test materials, trial construction methods, evaluate what works (and what doesn't), and refine their ideas for improvement. Mistakes are an important part of the journey, encouraging students to experiment, problem-solve, and justify their decisions. These are the same skills used in industries such as fashion, industrial design, upholstery, costume, and manufacturing.
It has been amazing to watch our students grow. Many started the semester learning to sew a straight line on paper and are now independently and accurately creating projects they can be proud of.
It brings me so much joy to walk around the school and see our Year 9 students using the pencil cases they made, and I hope many families are enjoying a new bowl cosy at home, keeping fingers safe from hot dishes straight out of the microwave!
Our Year 10 students have also been busy completing their passion projects, with an incredible range of outcomes including quilts and beautifully appliquéd hot water bottle covers. I can't wait to see what they create next.
The photos this week showcase some of the fantastic work our Year 10 students have completed as they finish off a very successful semester.
As students begin thinking about next year, I hope many will choose to continue with Fabric Technology. As a bubble subject at SHS, students can take Fabric right through to Year 13, gaining valuable design and problem-solving skills while working towards Level 3 University Entrance credits. I would love to see this talented group continue their creative journey.

Rockquest
Stratford High had a strong showing at this year's Taranaki Regional final of the Smokefree Rockquest competition, held on Sat June 6 at NPGHS.
We had 2 bands entered: 'Mind the Gap' (Cohen Jones, Silas Blanche, Lukas Hargreaves-Ward, Taryn Ranclaud & Josh Sullivan), and 'Arkhana' (Isaac Anderson, Christian Hart, Aleah Ooink-Crofskey, Sam Nordstrom & Archie Hart). Both played hard and got the crowd behind them, but unfortunately were beaten for placings by bands from other schools. 'Who's Johnson', featuring Dylan Buck, placed 2nd in the region, and now will submit a video entry for a chance at the national final. Sam Nordstrom (bass player for Arkhana) also won the Musicianship Award (shared with one other student).
Huge congratulations to those winners, and well done to all our students who represented SHS and did us proud!
Year 10 TOPEC
Recently, a group of our Year 10 students spent five exciting days at TOPEC, taking part in a range of outdoor education activities designed to challenge, inspire, and develop personal growth.
The TOPEC experience provides students with the opportunity to step outside their comfort zones, build resilience, strengthen teamwork skills, and develop confidence in themselves and others. Through a variety of adventure-based activities, students were encouraged to take on new challenges, support their peers, and embrace new experiences.
This valuable opportunity helps our students grow into well-rounded young people by developing important life skills that extend far beyond the classroom. We are proud of the way our students represented Stratford High School and the positive attitudes they demonstrated throughout their time away.
A big thank you to the staff who accompanied the group and helped make this memorable experience possible. We look forward to seeing how our students continue to apply the skills and confidence they gained at TOPEC in their everyday lives.
Year 11 Outdoor Education
The Year 11 Outdoor Education class recently made the most of their time at TOPEC, taking on an exciting adventure exploring some of the region’s local caves. Students had the opportunity to challenge themselves as they navigated underground passages, learned about the unique natural environment, and developed valuable teamwork and problem-solving skills along the way.
It was fantastic to see students stepping outside their comfort zones, supporting one another, and embracing the challenges that outdoor education offers. A memorable day of learning and exploration for all involved.
CR7 Elective - Mixed Media Art Boxes
It has been wonderful to teach Mixed Media Art again this year. Our students are incredibly creative and love experimenting with different materials and techniques to make each piece unique.
We begin with a simple textured background using texture paste, then week by week build up layers using fabric, paper, wooden and metal embellishments, flowers, and just about any other interesting findings we can get our hands on. The excitement of watching an idea grow and evolve into a finished artwork is one of the best parts of the course.
The photos show some of our talented students and the fabulous mixed media art boxes they have created this term. I am so proud of what they have achieved and look forward to welcoming a new group of creative students next term.
Annual Variety Concert
Our annual Variety Concert, held in the school hall, was a fantastic celebration of the many talents within our kura. Students took to the stage to share their skills, confidence, and creativity, entertaining the audience with a wide range of performances.
From music and singing to dance and other unique acts, the evening showcased the incredible talent that exists across Stratford High School. What made the concert especially memorable was the willingness of so many students to step outside their comfort zones and give something new a go.
A huge congratulations to every student who performed. It takes courage to stand in front of an audience, and we are incredibly proud of everyone who participated. Thank you also to the staff and students who worked behind the scenes to help make the event such a success.
The Variety Concert was a wonderful reminder of the creativity, passion, and talent of our students. Well done to all involved.
Technology Department Showcase
Our talented Year 10 Technology students have been hard at work creating some fantastic projects in both the Metalwork and Woodwork departments.
The Metalwork students were excited to proudly ride their completed scooters around the school – a great way to celebrate the skills and effort that went into their projects.
The Woodwork students have also produced some impressive wooden tables, showcasing their craftsmanship, creativity, and attention to detail.
Some of these projects are currently on display in the Main Office foyer.
Junior Market Day
Our Junior Market Day is a great opportunity for our Commerce students to learn about financial literacy, entrepreneurial thinking, communication and social skills, teamwork and collaboration, and real-world understanding. There are weeks of preparation in class, followed by baking, cooking, and preparation at home in the days leading up to the event. Well done to all those who went outside their comfort zone, and a big thanks to those who supported the students.
School Bus Travel From Hawera
I’ve had a number of enquiries recently from parents of students who live outside of the ‘catchment’ for Stratford High School, hoping to be able to get their child(ren) to the nearest Stratford High School bus stop, for them to travel on the bus from there.
Unfortunately, while SHS isn’t zoned, the seats on the school bus service are, funded from what’s called a ‘Transport Eligibility Zone’ by the Ministry of Education. Students getting on the buses from outside the TEZ for SHS produces overcrowding and an unsafe situation on the bus, so I’m unable to agree to this, in such a scenario. There are three other options, though.
Firstly, there’s the Connector Bus service, which passes through Stratford on the run from Hawera to New Plymouth.
Secondly, there is the potential possibility of being able to transfer the eligibility of your child(ren) to the SHS transport zone. If your child lives near a midpoint where it’s closer to Te Pae Pae o Aotea, the School Transport Team at the Ministry of Education could do this, were you to apply. This has worked for a number of students this year. Please email me (wd@stratfordhigh.school.nz) if you’d like to apply for this, and I can talk you through what’s required and connect you with the relevant staff at the MoE.
The third option a number of families take advantage of is carpooling. if you’re interested in connecting with other parents to inquire into or set up a car-pooling for the benefit of everyone involved, and you don’t mind sharing your contact details, please email me (wd@stratfordhigh.school.nz), and I can put you all in touch with each other.

Sports Exchange with Whanganui High School
It was wonderful to host Whanganui High School at our kura for a fantastic sports exchange.
Our students enjoyed an afternoon of competitive and spirited netball and rugby, with both matches being closely contested. Congratulations to Whanganui High School, who came out on top in both games.
A big thank you to the players, coaches, staff, and supporters who helped make the day such a success. We appreciated the opportunity to connect, compete, and strengthen the friendship between our two schools.
Thank you for joining us—we look forward to welcoming you back in the future.
Sports Round-Up
New Zealand Secondary Schools Cross Country
Hugh Pennington and Kaden Jones competed in the Junior Boys’ New Zealand Secondary Schools Cross Country. The event was held in Trentham, Upper Hutt, and was run over 4 kilometres with a large field of 140 runners.
The weather was terrible, but both boys ran well, with Hugh achieving a personal best for the distance.
We are proud of you both.

Subject Changes and Charges
If your student has changed a subject please let Mrs Terry know via email so the statement can be adjusted to reflect the changes STerry@stratfordhigh.school.nz
Making Payments
There are a variety of ways that you can make payments to cover school costs. The main office receives cash and EFTPOS payments and you can also pay online via direct credit. Parents can also set up an automatic payment to cover schooling costs. When setting up the automatic payment, consider a minimum payment of $15.00 per week, which is sufficient to pay for all school, curriculum and sport costs for a student during the year.
Payments will be automatically applied to “required payments”. Subsequent payments will sit as a credit on the student’s account. If you would like to have payments allocated to the “voluntary payments”, please email STerry@stratfordhigh.school.nz with the details.
You can set this up by either using your bank’s online banking services or downloading the Automatic Payment Authority form and taking this to your bank. Please remember to use the students’ name for any payments.
Have you changed your contact details?
